First, I want to say you're a brave person for putting yourself out there like you do. It's something that I have had a hard time doing and leading with your chin like that should be positively acknowledged. Second, I think you might be selling yourself short by saying you're average.at painting. This is better than 75% of the stuff I see out there, more if you count all the people who don't get past the primer stage. Third, this video is an incredible tool out there that I'm going to share with any of the people who are newer into the hobby that are trying to get their work closer what they initially envisioned for their stuff. I think your style is very approachable for a newer painter, as opposed to a lot of stuff I see that is more about the later incremental improvement after you are already 80% of the way there.

My biggest issue is staying motivated. I feel like too little butter spread over too much bread, so to speak. I work too much and have a young family, on top of normal every day depression. Getting something accomplished really helps elevate me out of that state, but forcing my self to start painting lately has been really hard :( it’s so much easier to sit in front of the switch all night.
@MSPaints2 жыл бұрын
It is easier indeed! If you have to force yourself, and gives you guilt for not doing it you might be best putting it out of sight and mind until the hobby itch really needs scratching. Give it time, and it’ll feel as easy as the switch. At least that’s what I do when it comes to free time hobbying! I hope that helps. Enjoy the hobby, don’t force it! Big love.

Hey Dave. You have hit the nail on the head for many of us in the hobby who fall down the rabbit hole of detail, detail, detail. I'm always thinking of how others will judge my results. I know I shouldn't, but hey that's me lol. Being really badly colour blind I've built up a set of skills that assist me in the way I paint things, and totally avoid techniques such as wet blending and layering (trust me, the results are usually horrific lol), so stick to shades and dry brushing instead. There's an awful lot of pressure put on people to achieve Golden Demon painting level and not enough encouragement to just be as good as we are comfortable with being. Thanks once again for a great vid, and the mini's look excellent. Love the LED effect.

Lovely army project, including those well-painted ‘unpainted’ cavalry. I’ve been been painting since around 1980 and I’m finally learning how to scale back, simplify, and focus on the most important eye catching details.
@MSPaints3 жыл бұрын
Seems like the healthiest way to go mentally. Just to crush through the stuff. Are you finding you’re getting through stuff faster?
@oldschoolfrp23263 жыл бұрын
I’ve gotten a lot more completed lately. Army painting and board game painting advice has been more helpful than Golden Demon type advice. Starting with RPG miniatures can make a painter want to treat each figure as a unique masterpiece. I had to learn how to see an army as one big collective model and imagine what it should look like all together as a group. Painting a box full of lower quality figures from a board game was a great learning exercise because I knew I couldn’t rely on old habits and started looking for tips to make just one or two details stand out. I saw they turned out better, faster, than my more ‘serious’ efforts. And making peace with those rising/falling curves of experience vs ability - if I can’t see or control the brush well enough to nail a tiny detail without spending too much time on it, then blend it into the background and move on. I’ll still try to paint eyes on heroes, but I’m comfortable skipping them when I can’t, and I plan from the start to skip them on the rank and file marching behind the leaders.
@MSPaints3 жыл бұрын
@@oldschoolfrp2326 Yeah man, had the same situation when i came across my first lot of board game minis that didn't QUITE look like the 3d renders in the press pack. Nice enough minis, but basecoat, wash, maybe an edge or two brought out and nothing else was really gonna make a fat lot of difference. Sounds like you've come to a peace with it though, and it sounds like you can switch gear when needed, so that's good!

The Cities of Sigmar Army as it's now called isn't really available of the shelf anymore in GW stores. It's kind of only mail order or online ordering. It sort of sucks.
