My six year old son watched this with me while I cooked breakfast. He got so excited - “I want to paint those, Mom!” (To which I was happily able to reply - “That’s the plan for this afternoon, I’d love it if you joined me in our studio!”) There were so many opportunities to point out healthy ways to handle frustration with art, which he struggles with greatly as a gifted kid who expects to do everything as perfectly and as easily as he does his academics or engineering projects. (This has caused him a lot of tears with art, which does not come as naturally as he had hoped.) Thank you. We’re going to start watching a lot more of your videos together, they’re so good for both of us!

I love hearing this! My son, also 6 definitely struggles with art too. He's extremely sensitive and feels his teacher judges his coloring pages, etc...poor guy. I work with him on sketching ninjas and other such characters and he's having a blast!

“Hooker's green was introduced around 1900 and is named after Mr Hooker. He created the colour by mixing toxic gamboge with Prussian blue. Over the years, the mixture of the gamboge dye with the Prussian blue pigment was replaced by a stand-alone green dye.”

@@KristyRice same, plus, I grew up at a quarter mile race track and became aquainted with "Hooker Headers", which my teenage self took a picture of the logo, went and got the film developed, cuz 2003, and taped it to my wall in my teenage bedroom. So hearing "Hooker's green" brings back good memories from that time.

Tulips are my favorite flower so I'm going to be a rebel and paint my own freedom tulips, as I enjoy painting them over roses. 😂. I kinda gasped when you took the dark blue to the 2nd flower. However, as the flower evolved I was blown away how it magically came together and worked. Thanks for another great video boosting confidence in experimentation and painting in general. 💕

I appreciated your video very much... did a mini painting of 2 roses, one from side view, while I paused you... haven't put paint to paper in about 10 days... loved your ink rose & I should try it next... never seen ink just hanging out and along comes Kristy - and wow!!! I am holding my pouch of Kristy's brushes in my hands! They just came from Amazon today! I'm so excited that I finally was able to order them - I had been really frustrated because they had been out of stock. Now I'm checking every day for her watercolor palette! Kristy, I love your style of teaching so much. You make it look easy, and fun! I have some little nieces and a grandson that I plan to have some "Art Days" with this summer. I forgot to say that in my home right now, I have several floral arrangements from my daughter's Celebration of Life. Every rose is different, and some are a bit wonky. Nature isn't perfect either. That means however our roses or other flowers turn out, the joy is in playing with the brushes and paints. The more we play the better our art will look.

Kristy, I think the desire to paint pretty roses is present in so many of us. If you’re a lover of flowers 👍and you’re a lover of watercolors 👍 then you have probably wanted to be able to paint beautiful roses effortlessly. I’ve practiced to the point where I can paint a stylized rose in a couple of different ways or they sometimes come out looking like a camellia…those early spring shrub beauties, but I have felt a level of success. (And I do have the daisy and tulip down pretty good. ) But, to paint more (relatively) botanically correct roses and other more complex flowers is still pretty tricky for me.So much so that I may just resort to tracing so I can get on to actually painting. I have learned that I need to stay away from too much struggling over foundational drawings. Because if I do, then I will often get tired and discouraged and end up quitting. So it’s great that you’re teaching these basic simple steps to help beginner artists and even more advanced artists easy how-to tips with flower and petal shapes. Practice, practice, practice. Thanks!

However you have boosted my confidence by telling “you can do it!” I have pulled out my many supplies (I have tons because I always thought it was a supply problem 😂😂) Anyway I have covered my studio floor with paper stacks, various (many brands) paint trays and pictures of ideas!! I filled my spray bottle with warm water (like you said to do) , I purchased one of your brush assortments and added them to my plethora of brushes (yours will bring me luck) and I have dug my heels in and I am painting like a mad woman!!! Hello Kristy, thank you for being you! The time I get to spend on painting and relaxing is my fun time and my time to let my soul rehydrate, I wouldn't bother to follow anyone who would ruin that freedom by pointing out rules and other " You should never". Advice is something else and you are so honest and joyful when it comes to sharing your knowledge. I started to paint with watercolours in January this year and now I'm addicted, not a moment of the day goes by without me thinking, dreaming of painting and getting images in my head. I have a totally anarchistic approach to art and learn as I go. The one thing I'm longing for is the community and sharing the art journey with others but following you and reading comments made here give me a sense of belonging. 🌈🎨

The thing I struggle with most about roses is getting mine look super huge and flat or super convexed which is more like a zinnia or a marigold. I'm all about the loose watercolor but still want the gist or spirit of the real thing. I also struggle with framing them within a floral composition. They either melt into the background in an unappealing way or stick out like a sore thumb. Thanks for sharing!

What kind of pallet do you use? I am a real beginner and I love all the colors you use. And what do you use to mix your paints? Thanks Kristy..

Nice job! I've only been doing water colors for about a month now. I'm pretty happy with my roses, not as nice as yours, but I'm happy. I need to learn some other flowers though! When I try to do something else, they look like leaves! So my painting looks like a rose or 2 with a BUNCH of different colors if leaves?

I think I like the ink painting. It's not scary but I could be wrong coming from someone who never painted before.

I'm glad to know that I am not the only person who thinks Hooker's Green is an odd name. I really struggle with knowing how much water to use. I feel like I am using a good amount of water, but it dries before I can drop in color. If I add more water, then it just puddles. Maybe I need to use better paper? I have been practicing on cheap paper because I suck--I'm saving the good paper for when I am better. Would I be less frustrated if I just practiced on Academy paper instead of Canson?

100% Your going to have a way different experience with academy, not only that but you can paint on both sides.
