Ended up buying that exact astro siphon gun because I do use single stage sometimes and want to try it myself. I like the idea of going old school using the style of gun that would have painted millions of cars now considered classic.

Right on Shaun, When I was low man on the totem poll, I had to drain the water out of all the compressor tanks. There was around 25 in the shop. It took 30 minutes every morning. -Chuck

Long, long comment - but reasonably important. I have been raving about the "new" LVLP guns - till today. Today I chucked it across the workshop, then into the bin, after tipping the cup of paint into one of my old HVLP guns I dug out of the back of a shelf. Reason being I was painting a huge bonnet panel. For the second time. Because the first go gave a finish that looked like dog-crap. So I sanded it back to primer, re-primed it, started to re-shoot the base - and the finish was once more looking dog-crap. Reason being - after my brain kicked in - the LVLP gun just couldn't atomise the high-solids base I was using well enough at any setting. The fan was tiny, shooting dry at every setting, paint going on waaay too slow, too thin, leaving an absolute rubbish finish. Rubbish. Broke my absolute heart trying to paint that big panel. Anyway - I chucked the stupidly expensive paint into my old gun, jogged back to the booth covered in sweat & shot the panel again over the rubbish LVLP effort - no fancy air-pressure regulator like the LVLP has, gun guzzling air like it's going out of fashion, chucking out paint like a fire-hose in comparison to the LVLP, huge fan, wet wet wet - and it shot that panel like glass. Glass. I sat down & did some reflection on my short time with the LVLP. What that reflection resulted in was that I'd been blinded by the lack of overspray, the hype & the low air-consumption. I'd managed to kid myself that it was doing great - when really, it wasn't. I also reflected on the last few months of shooting primer - I shoot a fair bit of primer, the last few months I have been banging it all through a 1.8 gravity gun. Coincidentally (because I am slow) the last few months, I've been unhappy with my primer coats, so what changed? Well what changed was I stopped using a 2.0 syphon feed gun for primer. Nothing else, just that. I've been painting for donkeys years, son came along with "new" ideas and a 1.8 gravity gun took the place of the old syphon gun.. I barely noticed but I should have - ever since, primer coats have annoyed me & I was blaming me/the material - chopping & changing brands of paint, still getting "dry" primer coats. Thicko me ought to have copped that the old phrase "a bad workman always blames his tools" was written by some clown in an office who never used tools. If you are vaguely competent & are still getting bad results - big chance is, it's the tools. If you try run around the Derby course on a pony, chances are you'll look crap compared to the Lads using a race-horse. "It's the Tools, Dummy" - that was todays lesson for me. Gonna go buy a 2.0 syphon feed gun tuesday - tomorrow (monday) is a Bank Holiday, go back to shooting primer like I used. Gonna bang base & clear through the old HVLP gun too. I prefer glass to a dogs-azz, even if it does chuck overspray everywhere & make the compressor beg for mercy. Some "Innovations" ain't. Sometimes you accept the "narrative" & give "New!!" a try - often you then discover "Old" was better, but only after much hardship.

Interesting results. I have 3 cheap spray guns from princess auto but I figured I needed one decent gun cause I need all the help I can get so I bought an anest Iwata w-400. $500 w/cup and regulator. It’s only money and I don’t have a wife to talk me out of it

yes sir i research before i buy to make sure it will work for me and you ,hvlp guns dont work well for the DIY persons ,they require too much volume of air different fitting and hoses. thanks JSjjizza

With the 1.8 siphon gun, does clearcoat come out smooth? How's the orange peel? I have similar guns and use for primer but have not tried it for clear.

Smooth finish comes with experience but this gun works excellent, I have only tested on single stage paint but I will test it on some Clearwater shortly. It punches way above its weight so it will be good to find out 👍

The 1.7 1.8 in a siphon will spray any material better than any gravity feed gun on the market today. I have a video coming explaining why, great question 👍
