It's Lois here today, join me for an experimental session trying to capture the beauty of reflections from this old, worn-looking boat tied up to an old rusting jetty, an impressionistic loose watercolour painting using the wet in wet method and really simplifying the scene to create suggestions of detail rather than the detail, and focusing on a range of tonal values and foreshortening to create an interesting image.
Materials: Saunders Waterford 140lb/300gsm cold pressed watercolour paper, 11" by 15"/28cms x 38cms. It is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape, today I have created a smaller aperture with masking tape to suit the composition. My board is flat to start with, then at angle of about 45 degrees. I use various brushes as shown in the demo, but use any similar ones you have. My colours today are limited: burnt sienna, prussian blue, cerulean blue, cobalt blue and neutral tint.

I will vote this as one of the best videos that I have seen. You have always been an impressionist, so it was a pleasure to see you dwelling on details. In fact, I mistook it for an oil painting. There are so many techniques to learn in this video - the way you layered up colours, the dry brushing on the boat to give it a worn-out look and and not to forget, the technique of painting the beautiful reflection of the boat in the water. Outstanding work, Lois 👌👌👌

I saw this a little over an hour ago, and haven't commented until now as I couldn't see to type. What can I say? Starting by giving thanks. Just days ago I was wondering if you would go down the route of this subject type, and here it is. I used to paint quite a lot of calm water scenes, some with boats, and others without. But rarely did I use a photo for reference, but preferred to paint from heart felt desires to be right where that picture was of. Mostly no place in particular. Often fuelled by a need to escape from 5 rowdy kids and a wife who was always on edge. Rather than physically get up and run, I'd take advantage of a few minutes of relative quite, and drift off into places that don't exist except for the end of a brush. What you've created here is just such an escape, but from my own mind and it's worries. It was pure joy watching your painting take shape, from that which is close to the way I see, (how it was when you let it dry), to a beautiful sense that is as thick with blissful solace, as honey. That over all feeling of utter peace is enhanced by the lack of a clear horizon. I saw a fishing video, the fallow was stood on the beech on a hot june day, the sea was flat like glass, the sky a gorgeous deep blue, the paled toward the horizon, in a way that I could tell where the sky ended and the sea started. Been ages since I saw the coast and in particular, on t a day with those conditions. And twic in 2 days, reminders of how wonderful those days were. Smashing job Lois. So many times thanks have gone to you, but not often as heart felt as this time. Be well sweet lady. TTFN
