I've been hired to project manage a haunted attraction and we make a lot of strange items into stone looks. Almost anything you can think of you'll find at a thrift store, we can probably find a way to make it stone... anyway, my question is on painting ornate items that have polished finishes or glazes that are too hard to sand well. A lot of stone props we make its easy just to throw monster mud (drywall compound and outdoor paint) or Drylok... but for things that don't really need the extra hardening, or have detail work that we need to keep to spraying, I want to make sure i'm adhering well to the surfaces and it wont chip outside in the elements all year. I have a project now where I have metal lamps, some kind of ceramic with a glaze and other objects of unknown material that shiny surfaces. I've got a technique for making the stone look with paint, but unsure if I need to prime, or if I can just use spray paints fine.

I am attempting a furniture restoration for my niece and have several different pieces, including a wood dining set and a laminate/ particle board closet and computer desk. I did some research yesterday and learned that a shellac-based primer would be good at blocking wood bleeding and also help the paint adhere to the laminate but at the hardware store today the sales rep was trying to talk me into buying Gripper, which he said was water-based. Whilst Zinsser products are pretty dear, there are of very good quality. I would use Cover Stain. However, it does flash/grin through emulsion. I had to coat over Cover Stain with Bulls Eye 1-2-3 before attempting to paint with emulsion. B-I-N is also very good, but dries very quickly, so the finish can be ruined as the shellac gets sticky if you don't finish laying off quick enough. As the solvent is meths /alcohol, that's something that smells quite strong, is flammable and therefore takes getting use to.

(incase someone new reads this) YOU DON"T NEED PRIMER when painting over paint. (So long as the wall isn't plastered with crap like smoke, oil, crayons lol) . Think of it; you want to turn your dark walls light in the least amount of coats right? For extreme changes its going to take three coats. Most ppl look at this as primer then paint then paint. But the thing is, you want your first coat (base coat) to be as opaque as you can. And that will NOT be accomplished with primer. Using a primer strickly to change colors is a bullshit sales pitch because in this case, it'll do very little and you'll still end up putting three MORE coats of SOMETHING on. Buy a less expensive flat paint that is the least transparant and tint it to the color you are going to. Your paint store will know. The local ones. Probably not the $12/hr Home Depot or Lowes ppl. What you are aiming for here isnt quality, sheen, durability, wipeabilty, NONE of that. You are simply trying to get that dark covered. This comes down to opacity.

Be careful with the Bin shellac primer fumes. Make sure you have adequate ventilation or an exhaust fan. The can now has a bigger flammable label on the front due to some explosions that have been caused from sparks or pilot flames on stoves water heaters etc etc near by. Its also recommended to keep any compressors outside the spraying area to avoid a potential spark up and deadly fire. I have sprayed and rolled Bin primer numerous times and love it. A 3/8 nap premium shed less knit purple roller from home depot part# 1001287431 works great with lightly thinned down paint, dont worry about rough texture at first..it will dry even and sand super easy and smooth. In some cases i have used Bin as primer and top coat for interior portions of cabinets and holds up very well with 2 or 3 coats unsanded. You can tint Bin also, hope this helps.

What primer would you use on an 10 year old pressure treated deck? What paint would you use?

What primer would you recommend for drywall and plaster? Is there one that is most affordable and still effective?
@thepaintpeople3 жыл бұрын
The 123 would work well. Most companies have drywall specific primers that tend to be more affordable.

What is your favorite primer for new drywall? Everyone seems to have an opinion on this but yours I’m interested in knowing! :)

Aqualock and Fresh Start are great all purpose primers but Step One is a fantastic economical option!

I'm surprised he didn't mention PVA primer at all. I'm curious to learn where PVA primer falls in all this.
@oufannamedbrandon67152 жыл бұрын
In my experience, PVA primers are only good for new drywall and mud repairs. They are cheap but if you're painting anything other than new drywall/mud it's similar to using a very thinned out paint.. takes several coats but great for new drywall work.

Great video! I'm getting ready to paint over stained trim inside the home (baseboards, door trim, doors and window trim). The girl said I wanted an oil-based primer which is what I purchased. However, the paint is latex. Can you paint over oil-based primer with latex paint?

This is exactly what I searched for today - thank you! You're informative and you stay on topic.I'm a new fan and subscriber. May I get your thoughts about priming a very porous ceiling? The ceilings in my 'new' place had never been painted; they still have the builder-grade, grayish, textured ick that was sprayed...27 years ago. Yes, they're gross. But after cleaning them up a bit, I realized just how porous they are and so I'm a little nervous about which primer to try. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I realize it'd be a blind guess, however yours is likely far better than mine.

If you have a stucco ceiling that has never been painted, we strongly recommend using an oil based primer as your first coat followed by two coats of a water based ceiling paint. Hope that helps!
