Do we need Lindsay to give us a “Watercolor Paints addiction/hoarder” group so we can stop spending all this money? 😂 I’m getting really bad about buying stuff she recommends!! (And for some reason I never get the coupons from Amazon like she gets!) I love Lindsay ♥️…have followed her for years, but lately, it just too much of a temptations I watch her paint reviews 😄. Frugal I am not being!! And the worst part for me, is that I’m just a beginner w/c painter (would never have courage enough to call myself an artist!), and I’m not sure I (let alone my budget) deserve these paints. 😕. @@hollyw2149 I recommend asking yourself if you want to paint or you want to mostly collect paints. I noticed that many good working illustrators inly have 1-2 palettes. But if you are bitten by the "collect and compare" bug, I have no idea how to cure it. 😜

I have this set and while I was swatching them, I thought they felt very familiar. I started digging through my swatch cards and found the Artsy set that matched. I was really disappointed that I purchased the same paints. I love getting cheap paints and swatching them. I typically used Daniel Smith but don't want to waste it for mixing and practice. That's where the cheap paints come in. I love the experience of opening each pan and getting to know the colors. I think that ship has sailed. That's why I'm disappointed. I also felt like the paints were ok. I obviously like them because I have several pallets of the paints. I have to stop. I said before that it makes sense for you to have this much paint... but someone like me just doesn't need it. I'll have to start a KZbin channel just so I can justify all of this budget paint and colored pencils that have taken over my studio.

I like collecting tins, so I wouldn't be opposed to buying 4 sets to get one of each, as it seems they have 4 available, but no where in the listing do they offer the option to choose the tin colour.

“skin” is the same as the “flesh tone 1” and “flesh tone 2” you also see called “Jaune Brilliant 1” etc. Classically Cad Yellow, Cad Red and Zinc White is one and the other has Cad Orange in place of Yellow and you’re meant to add Burnt Umber and/or Zinc White to get the skin tone you want. In acrylic I mix a cool yellow, midtone red and warm blue to make a brown and then dilute with white and add burnt umber in the same way, but for these Eastern “Flesh” etc etc paints, adding a cool blue can be needed alone with your Burnt Umber. They’re just a convenience mix for portrait painters to give you the red and yellow undertones so even if you make a dark brown skin by adding loads of umber it will have that kind of “glow” you get from the reds and yellow hiding in real skin. The only time I did that falls down is people from Ghana in particular and environs in certain lighting where their very dark brown skin will have a violet or blue undertone but that’s more to do with the lighting than the skin itself ;)

Well you get the primaries and black and white in basic gouache sets by many different brands, and sometimes there are also those 5 tube sets of acrylics, maybe also oils. With watercolor it's not really that useful to throw in a white when there are only 5 colors alltogether. But there certainly are watercolor artists who choose to work with only such a small number of colors.

(Definitely no rhyme or reason for the swatch sheet order) Anyway I took my time, carefully wet each rectangle and painted mass tone to watered down and its so pretty. I personally think for the price I paid, ($24.50) this budget set has a lot going for it. Nice tin, chamois cloth I assume is for dabbing your brush on...is nice the sturdy box one can store the tin in to keep it from getting banged up, the paints while comparable to most other popular budget brands are nice for the price. I think for someone who may have most of the budget sets available, they won't need or be super blown away with this set unless they can't live without the pretty palette. For someone like myself who didn't have a large metal palette and wanted one, this was a super deal.👍

Yesterday I re-watched your video about the Pretty Excellent/Mei Lang pan set. I have them and was curious to what you thought again. BTW I love em. The thing is, in 2018, you began the video with your problem of buying too many watercolors. I thought it was funny that three years later you are still saying, "I have to stop!" Just roll with it. Accept yourself. You will buy every watercolor paint that you can. Just breathe. 😁

I compared my unopened Art Whale to my unopened Superior brand sets--both half pans. The paint names and numbers are identical, and the packaging is very similar, just as you found. I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to open them yet! Really looking forward to using them now. I REALLY appreciate that they give us the pigment codes used.

So I looked at where each of these dupe companies are located, based on their contact info on Amazon. Artsy is based in Beijing. Art Whale is based in Miami, Florida (the official company name is a person's name). Doodle Hog is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Superior Arts is located in a city in China that I'm unfamiliar with: cixi zhejiang is what is listed on Amazon. So I think that Superior is making these for various entrepreneurs.

Thanks, Lindsey, I really did enjoy this. I like how informative you are and your "digging" into the mystery of what blends the pigments really are. I have to. admit, though, that I love my Paul Rubens 24 set (artist/professional one) and so I clicked on your Amazon link to view the 48 set. I have to say, I really want that one now because of the extra blues and yellows in it. I didn't see you review the 48 set. I am wondering what you think of all the colors -- whether it is really worth it to get it since I already have the 24 set and the 24 sparkly set, too. I find that so far I haven't used the sparkly set . . . but Christmas is coming and I bet in making cards and bookmarks that could come in handy and be fun to use. :) Thanks! I wasn't one to "hoard" but now that I am doing watercolor, I love to buy these sets! I just bought the QOR 12 pan and then I realized I meant to buy the high chrome color set of six so then I bought that. I have some Van Gogh plein air sets. I love the muted color one by Van Gogh -- it is my Gogh to set LOL. Seriously, some of those pans are getting empty. I have the plein air basic mixing color set with some earth tones thrown in. I like the creaminess and intensity of the Van Gogh sets even though I don't see them reviewed too often . . . so I bought the bigger 24 flower/botanical set. The colors in that are fine. But I hate to take that set with me because none of the Van Gogh sets are in metal tins and the 24 set is constantly falling apart if I set it sideways or the wrong way. Nothing stays in place, so I won't be buying the sets in plastic anymore (at least Van Gogh) because of that. Tins are definitely so much better.
@thefrugalcrafter3 жыл бұрын
Well, I also have the Paul rubens 24 set and I just bought the 48. I've wanted it for a while and they had it for $62 today so I took the plunge. Im sure I'll be happy with it. It's an outstanding value.
@jeankellner43143 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I am going to take the plunge, too. I love the tin and some of the colors I haven't seen yet like peacock blue, Chinese red, two tones of turquoise, and two tones of the Naples yellow, plus the red ochre color would be great for when I try to paint the red rock structures here in southern Utah and Nevada where I live!

Thanks so much. It gets so confusing especially when a 36 pan & a 48 pan from the "same" name, aren't the same paints.

It really is! It happens a lot but often the palette is a different style so it's easy to tell. When they both come in tins it's hard to know what's what.

Gosh, that's a nice set... I really love all those yellows. I'm learning to mix, so I think that's a great set... (not $40 great), but I'm guessing it would be a good set if you wanted to do mixing and change the shade of your greens.

That odd transparent version of (PG17) Oxide Green that they call "hookers green brilliant" is also in a couple of the Paul Rubens sets that I have, and it's named the exact same thing- "hookers green brilliant". So that's interesting. These video's of yours are always so helpful, thankyou Lindsay! I've been trying to find information on companies that do this private labeling, but for watercolor paper + brushes, to see if they're worth it. Specifically the ones made from "Wonder Forest". Any ideas on that topic?
@justacatwhocantype3 жыл бұрын
I think the reason for similarities is because they (Superior) really tried to copy Paul Rubens. It's not just color names, but also the thing with the cloth, and chipboard box, and so on, and even the paper labels on the pans are a faint reminder.
@gailrodgers30793 жыл бұрын
Your topic tonight is pertinent about what I am about to say as these companies keep putting out the same stuff for people too rebuy over and over. Ever since you unboxed your Brutfunder colored pencils I have been curious about them. The other night I checked them out on Amazon and then checked on some of their smaller sets. This might be all old news to you, but when I was looking at reviews on their 180 set the reviewer said that Soucolor 180 were the exact same pencils. I started comparing pictures and for the Brutfunder 180 pencils only one pencil was showing its name and number and that was a green. I spent some time checking things out and these sets are the very same: Soucolor 180, Kalour 180, Shuttle Art 180, Riancy 180 and CCfoud both of the last two have Brutfunder printed right on the pencil s that they were showing in their listing. That means currently Amazon is selling 6 different colored pencil sets are all identical!!!! I discover that Brutfunder 160 is the same as South Sun 160. Also Soucolor 160 (which I have here at home) is the same as Color More 160 and Cool Back 160. I haven't done any detecting on the watercolors except for 3 sets are totally identical which I discovered when I swatched them all on the same paper to see which set was the best and they were all the same and I liked them all. Hope some of this is helpful to you and your viewers.

And to further complicate things companies will use different factories for different sizes sets. The brutfuner squares, black barreland color barrel pencils are all different from each other. The doodle hog 36 and 47 sets are different forom eavh other, same with art n Fly watercolors. It's a crap shoot 😆

@@thefrugalcrafter thank you! I have to say I originally bought the Gotideal set because I liked the palette but then they were fun to paint with. Lightfastness is questionable so for sketchbooks, etc but again, the “cheap” watercolors seem to be vying for lowest $$$. Just checked Amazon and Pretty Excellent is $18.99 and Gotideal is $13.99 plus a $2 off coupon! When sets go for so little I buy them and give to family and friends who are interested or who teach so they can spread the love of art.

This looks like some of the paint made in China. If so, they tends to be vibrant, but a major setback is time lasting factors. Many faded after 2-3 years (and i had a difficult time previously as i sold a few paintings, just to receive complaints a few years down the road.....)

Mungyo is one of the oldest manufacturer to private label. They have made most if the better Sargent art products since the 90s. Their pastel products are great and for flowy techniques they watercolors are also nice. Maybe it's just the way you swatched them (maybe different paper?) but the tubes really made a better impression on me - I would get those if I had to choose. BUT since I just threw out some watercolors this morning because they decided to grow mold, inspite of being stored in a dry place (the Arteza watercolors... apparently I am not the first person to experience this, as I remembr another viewer of yours saying that she had this issue) I am done trying budgt watercolors for a while, lol. Now I really hope that they did not infect any of my other paints via using the same brush on them. Most of the mold is kind of on the sides, kinda hidden by the pan inself, so it may have been there for a couple of days without me noticing. I really hope that I didn't jinx myself by complaining that I had accumulate too much stuff, lol.
@thefrugalcrafter3 жыл бұрын
Was it the tube or pan paint? I had to add a lot of glycerin to my arteza tubes to get them not to crack. I use them from the tubes now if i need to.
@justacatwhocantype3 жыл бұрын
@@thefrugalcrafter It was the pan paint, and a few months ago I talked to a person in the comments who had a similar issue with her Arteza paints. Guess the formula (which always kind of felt like a bar of soap to me...) is a good breeding ground. Well, overall I at least have to say that thank goodness it's those paints - they're the ones that I have the easiest time letting go. I guess I could have probably even saved them, just taking them out of the pans and cleaning them off, but I am extremely worried about spores being spread to my other paints, so I think it's safer to just get rid of them. I don't actually know how realistic that fear even is, but if I find mold in my working palette I will definitely start to cry, lol.
