Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

40 years ago, I put away my oil paints. Then a couple months ago, I saw one of your videos and then I watched several more. I got out my paint box the next morning and ordered some Gamisol (odorless now!), and now I'm painting again at age 70. I fear I don’t have time to learn everything, but I'm having a great deal of enjoyment. You are my favorite artist/instructor. You inspired me. Thank you so much.

Well, you have at least another 15 years of learning left. I just started again after a break of 12 years and thought it was a long time not to paint, you beat me! My paints were all still good too. Sounds like some of your paint tubes should be in a museum. As collectable objects, they may fetch double the price of new tubes and you could then buy double the number of new ones to replace them! Hope you enjoy your journey as much as I am. mine.

@---Dana---- 3 жыл бұрын
@@payntpot7623 , you're right. I was able to open most of the tubes. I was clueless and bought lots of colors, but they are not top grade paints, mostly Permanent Pigment and Grumbacher. The price tag on my cad red is $4,50! The alizarin crimson was $1.55. But that was precious money to us back then. I couldn't open some tubes even with hot water, so I ordered some empty tunes to transfer the paint to. Good luck. Have fun.

Through 4 years earning my BFA from The School of Visual Arts in NYC I never once saw a demonstration on how to paint from an art teacher. The majority of them never even brought in examples of their work and I had no idea what their skill level (if any) was. Some never got up from their seats. I was too young to know that school would be the biggest regret of my life. It was very expensive to learn very little. I was a waiter the first 5 years after graduation. Keep up the great work, I'm learning a HUGE amount from your channel! 100x better than art school!

Yes! High School art class ruined my love for art. Lazy, horrible "teacher" who taught not one thing. Made me give up and put my love for art on hold for over 35 years because I let her define me. I am enjoying the process now after picking up art 4 years ago.

Hi Cris. I follow you from a while and I watch your videos everyday, sometimes I re-watch them from time to time. This video in particular touched me in so many points, like business skills for example. I'm 52 now, and have a love/hate relationship with the art. I love painting, but hate that I can't live from it. Every time I'm painting there's a inner voice in my mind telling me I should do something profitable with my time, that this is an unachievable dream, but I'm addicted to painting. Even though I think it's too much work too little time. This took my whole life. I draw and paint since I'm 12yo (oil I started later in 2018, but had some tries at 13-14yo... By that time I didn't know about odorless solvents, I always were a self-taught artist, and I thought very hard to sustain that odor). I'm really looking forward your business course you will launch in July! Right now, I want to work as an artist, like a side hustle to turn my daily routine of my full time job more bearable. Bye! :)

Wow, yet another great video. I can't tell you how much I've learned from you. I would really really love to see talks about the business aspect of your art. I was watching another KZbinr (her medium is watercolors though) go over what her day to day tasks look like as a full time artist. She's very successful and makes a lot of money, however her days aren't filled with making a lot of art. They are filled with running her business and managing her social medias. I was so disappointed because I feel like I'm closer to the obsession with painting idea that you mentioned. So I'd love if you could show a way where we could paint a LOT, constantly improve, and still find a way to earn some income. Thanks again!

My painting instructor at my university would do a five minute walk-around, say a couple of sentences to each of us, then head to the bar to go drinking. He would come back 3 hours later, intoxicated, most of the class gone. This class cost about $1000 in today’s money. I got very little from him. Never once did he do a demo or even talk to us about techniques. I am learning more off YT from a variety of great artists like Chris than I ever did at that school. It’s a shame because that instructor was a very skilled painter.

Hi Chris, I'm a new patron of yours and watched some of your videos there. I really love your style. As a beginner I started with small simple paintings because they are realistically achievable especially when you're starting out, the quick achievement of finishing your them boosts confidence & highlights step by step what you need to improve on so that it's not so overwhelming. Similarly, when you set life goals, achieving those goals happens when you tackle one step at a time not getting the big things done all at once, ofcos if you try to achieve the big deliverables too quickly, you will fail and then be under the illusion that you cannot achieve your goals, same concept with painting. I also learned in reverse, then I'm learning now from the foundation & following a more traditional route with the fundamentals, they have value. The starving artist trope is outdated, there's always opportunities to sell your art, you've just got to have the balls to go after it and be brave. But when you enjoy what you do, you attract the opportunities to you, when I do my art, I just do it because I enjoy it, people see it and they want to buy it, because it's my own expression of energy and feeling and colour.

As a 53yo I’ve spent most of my life applying my attention to a “traditional” type job and now (and I think I always have….) see where my true passion is. So, YES… please lay it out there… this is what yo can do, and this is where to go… regardless of skill level. THANK YOU again, keep up the good work.

Would love to hear a little about the business side of art from someone who has found a way to support themselves from it for sure! I think it would be helpful to hear how your journey went and what worked, what didn't, etc but I also really love your channel because you're such a genuine seeming artist so I also don't want the channel to turn into another like hustle channel, if that makes sense? I think it's hard for new artists trying to pursue this field (I'm saying for a friend 😂) to not get intimidated and discouraged. There are so many different ways to make money that its a positive but also super overwhelming concept, just like the whole notion of finding a style and subjects, etc. This was long winded but I'm just saying I love your channel, you're so genuine and helpful and you make art so accessible and I think that's wonderful. I'm sure you would approach the business side just as authentically! haha.

Hi there, thank you for this video. Lots of relevant points for me and encouraging to hear too. As a professional artist, I work almost exclusively in pastel, but am trying to teach myself how to paint in different ways in oils. so thank you for your videos and generosity in sharing them. It's hard to manage high expectations and high standards with a beginner's level of skill, but I'm getting a lot out of the process and it feels good to be actively learning. Great life lesson/skill at managing the ego too, huh? I would definitely be interested in watching videos by you about the business side too as that is a particular tricky area for me. On a personal note, you for the time, effort and honesty that you put into your videos. Very much appreciated. If I am a better artist tomorrow or next week or next month or year, I can say with confidence that you have helped me get there. Thank you. Ali Bannister.

Hey Chris. I just painted a painting that I never thought I would achieve. You get most of the credit, my friend. I've been drawing and painting occasionally for most of my life with so-so results in acrylic and watercolor, but oil has been Mt Everest to me. As one of your patreons, I get so much out of watching you do a painting start to finish. I would love to have 1:1 time, if only to have you evaluate my progress. How many school art teachers have failed their students? I "clashed" with mine, and did not trust him to give me good advice. I thought if I went into an art career, I might begin to dislike doing art, so I took the cowardly way out. Now I find myself needing an extra income source. I have done a couple of random commissions, but need to somehow begin the dreaded "marketing" of my work. Such a scary thought. From what I understand, (am not on fb, instagram etc...) social media is full of artists selling, but no people buying. Why buy a work you cannot touch, anyway? Living in a small town means less population to sell locally. Do cards even sell now if you have them printed of your works? Who uses the post office now in the age of emails? So many negatives to selling art, it would be good to hear some positive suggestions. Looking forward to your ideas on the subject, Chris. Thanks for this.

I am sure youtube has some! Search up “how to draw an apple” or ucan look at an actual apple and draw along while continuously looking at the apple and try to copy what you see!!
