Paint with Me! The Simplest Tyranid Paint Scheme for Leviathan

Want to paint with me?
I'm painting a Termagant (or five) from the Leviathan boxed set for Warhammer 40K with a very simple blue and tan paint scheme to get these on the battlefield but looking good!
Paints Used:
Primer: Citadel Wraithbone Spray
Clean-up: Vallejo Plastic Putty + Water + Citadel Contrast Medium
Carapace: Citadel Contrast Tallasar Blue followed by Citadel Contrast Tallasar Blue/ Citadel Contrast Luxion Purple mix
Flesh: Citadel Contrast Aggaros Dunes; Inner Muscle: Citadel Contrast Aggaros Dunes + Sigvald Burgundy
Eyes: The Army Painter Gemstone Air Metallics
Tongue: Citadel Contrast Fleshtearers Red (or mixed variant) + Citadel Contrast Medium
Talons: Vallejo Surface Primer Gloss Black (two coats)
Hooves: Citadel Contrast Cygor Brown
Teeth: Citadel Base Wraithbone + Citadel Contrast Medium (over Aggaros Dunes)
Stones Termagants stood atop: Seraphim Sepia, then followed by Athonian Camoshade
Base Materials:
Texture: Vallejo Ground Texture Rough Grey Pumice + Cygor Brown + Sigvald Burgundy
Moss and Fallen Plants: Gale Force Nice Meadow Blend Flock + The Army Painter Battlefield Grass Green, followed by Athonian Camoshade
Tufts/Plants: GamersGrass Strong Green Tufts 6mm, GamersGrass Thick Dry Green 12mm, & GamersGrass Laser Plant Dumb Cane (with Cygor Brown dotted in center, covered by Athonian Camoshade, and matted with The Army Painter Anti-shine Matt Varnish)

Nice! That's almost identical to the Tyranid army I painted up about 10-15 years ago, when I saw the thumbnail I thought "Hey, someone took a photo of my Tyranids!" hahaha I'm trying to come up with a variation on the bone-blue-red scheme as I don't want to mimic it exactly on new models, but still want my new models to look at home in my old army.

I bought the 9th Edition Tyranid Codex for "Research Purposes" of course. In the future, I was thinking if having a tyranid army painted black like the Aliens.

You can find some really good concept images and painting methods for this online, like how to get the wet, glossy black and translucent effects. Adding in some battle damage to expose the acid blood can produce nice contrasts as well. Good luck with your hobbying!

You mention at the start of the video that you don't use a wet pallete with contrast paints, any particular reason why?

Because wet palettes slowly hydrate your paints, which is perfect for regular paints that are drying out and want to be thinned anyway, and also for anything that you mixed that you really don't want to mix again. But for Contrast paints, I prefer to work with them just as they are and not let them become diluted. If I want their colour thinned, I'd use Contrast Medium rather than water anyway. Also, due to their nature, if left in the palette for any length of time, they would explore the area, move on into other paints' territory, stain the palette's foam, etc. I am not against the use of wet palette for them if you're going to finish the project in one session, but feel no need to since I work with them by single drops (the benefit of having them in dropper bottles and having used them so often I have a good idea of exactly how much I need to drop out for any given model 🤔) If I were using two or more Contrasts simultaneously for a longer, complex wetblending project though, I'd probably go with a wet palette. There are exceptions to my own preferences 😄

oohh a long vid! I can work on some bases while this is on in the background. Also if army painter put two balls in their bottles, doesnt that reduce the value of the paint? I know those balls arent big but those bottles are small. Thats less room for paint and over time you would need to buy more paint, especially if you are doing some batch painting

As someone who put the mixing balls in there long before they put them in themselves, I can say there is plenty of room for them :) And I'm sure you still get the same amount of paint 👍

Were the bases still wet when filming? Cos they seem a tad glossy as it was turning and kinda took focus away from the model. Either way, love the paintjob and the basing.

I may be wrong, but you seem a little worn out in this video. If that is the case, don't feel like you have to make videos you don't feel like making right now. Personally, I would rather you waited until your heart was in it. That way, you don't get exhausted and trapped making videos you don't feel like making. The video is great as always by the way, but burnout is very real and can be accelerated by making things you lack motivation for at that time.
