Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

the "secret to oil painting" is practicing! I noticed that early on that people will market these secrets and that beginners will buy that... Ultimately it can be very toxic, because I meet many people in the public who see me painting and say something like "i'm not talented. I could never do that". I always try to tell them "YES YOU CAN!" Actually my whole life I believed I wasn't talented with art and couldn't do it. It was only as an adult a couple years ago where I saw a friend's sketchbook and it was so simple that I thought "maybe I could do that" and after reading some books on habit building I committed to drawing in my sketchbook every day. Well that grew into trying urban sketching, then trying gouache and watercolor, then eventually thinking? Maybe i can try oil paints! Now the main thing I do is plein air. My point is one thing leads to another, but it starts with eliminating that poisonous idea that art is this magical thing and only some special people can do it or that there are secrets. Anyone can do it, but you need to be generous enough with yourself to focus on practicing and not be too hard on yourself and also try to concentratedly study and learn some of the basic principles and not give up too quickly. Watching your videos is a GREAT resource for anyone starting out, or get a library book, or try to take a class or find a teacher. However you want to do it, but constancy, and frankly just believing you can and trying is the first step.

Lol same here. I do digital painting and been watching this channel. I started digital painting a year ago on weekends and used his advice and watched some of his painting videos. I actually became pretty decent sometimes I shock myself. I tried to stay as faithful to traditional painting when I digital painted. #1 One layer, #2 No undo, #3 use only one brush. I plan to post my thoughts on how I approach things. Probably in the fall or wintee. My central AC is out even the laptops are overheating. Next year I hope I have a job. Then I can move on to real paint lol. I am going to record my trial and error and post them up. Sometimes people need to see the process and realize people don't start out great.

Learn the fundamentals and practice it. Find inspiration from old masters. He's right, constantly practicing will get you where you want to be. You have to work hard for it.

I do think sometimes learning the fundamentals is presented by some as this difficult unknowable thing... “unless you buy my DVD set! “ when in reality there’s a lot of free resources and library books that can get you started. And once you do learn the fundamentals the next step is to practice as much as you can. And you’ll definitely see improvement. I think many myself included often let the perfect be the enemy of the good. We want things to be complex so that if we accomplish it we are special and if we fail we have an excuse. But if it’s not a secret magical thing then we don’t really have an excuse especially if we don’t try do we?

Rule number 6 is something I decided to apply this year! I’ve narrowed down my following bubble to 5 artists in particular for now, with similar painting styles. I’ve tried to analyze what is it exactly that I find so appealing in these artists instead of simply following them because they’re amazing. When focusing on the fundamentals I’ve begin to notice specific composition techniques and shape patterns that I aspire to develop, which helped me narrowing them down. Not so long ago I was exactly like you mentioned, lost in an ocean of fantastic, much more experienced artists to the point it became overwhelming. I carefully think about it now and it’s been great. You’re so right, when trying to simulate or apply someone else’s technique, or your own version of that, it has to make sense to you and your personal painting style and journey. Fantastic video (:

Regarding thinking there are secrets to painting, more than anything i wanted to paint like Dali. Somehow I got into the back room storage at the Library of Congress after using their computer search. I found an old, tiny copy of Dali’s 50 Secrets of Masterful Craftsmanship. I couldn’t make heads nor tails from the bits I read. But I was a believer. 30 or so years later I bought a larger, really nice copy of it. That puchase didn’t enlighten me AT ALL! The guy was a great painter, but he had to be a clever nutcase as well. He knew how to promote himself. But that book was a cruel spoof on admiring artists who wanted to learn from him. I just thought you’d find it a relevant anecdote to what you mentioned.

That was the best, most sincere and truest five points I heard an artist on here say. I’m sure you constantly have people asking about your brand of brushes, brand of paint, what canvases you use, do you do any additional prep to canvases or paint on them straight fro store…etc And you are dead right saying the masters of old had far less reliable tools, used dangerous products and certainly had much less money to buy tools than we do. I have made the mistake of spending hours watching one artist, bought all the kit he has then before I start to follow their instruction and start painting, I find another and another. In the end I had enough different products to open an art supplies store and never got to learning to paint. In the end I packed it all away except for a couple of sketch pads, some pencils, charcoal and pastels, a half dozen brushes and the three primary colours plus white and burnt umber. Now I make sure I draw and paint more than I watch others doing it. Hindsight…. It’s priceless lol

This advice is on point for beginners. I came to these conclusion through my first year of digital painting. I was looking at many different painters on KZbin both traditional and digital. However, one of your nick cage explanations really resonated with me. It just made sense. I kept my methods simple and close to traditional painting. No layers, no special brushes, no undo. I removed complexity so I can focus on painting itself and isolate the problems to deal with them. So far it's working. Every digital painting I finish, the next day I write what went right and what went wrong. Then I go to the next painting keep those what I did wrong in mind.

I use more colors so I can get the exact color that I want, very hard with a limited pallet,. Example , getting a good orange color,. And I paint what I love to see.

I appreciate the tips. Hopefully they will save time in improving my fundamental skill set. Drawing is my weak spot. I spent a lot of time not learning how to draw things I saw by taking shortcuts along the way. I am at the point that I am gradually shedding my bad habits whenever possible, the first one to shed is "tracing". In a pinch I will still use a modified grid system..

My goal for the last couple of weeks is to paint or draw a portrait every day, even over the last several days the difference is noticeable. I've also started telling myself, this is going to be an ugly painting, frees me up.

I digital paint but I try to keep it traditional, my first painting took 20 hours. I was satisfied. I went to sleep and then woke up the next day. It looked like a cartoon. I looked at what I did wrong and what little I did right. Then I watched KZbin artists do their thing. Over time I incorporated their advice and possible solutions to my own analysis of my paintings. My skills kept jumping because I knew that when I paint, it's not for anybody (yet) it for me to learn. I would take hours on the weekend painting, repainting, starting all over again trying different things. I wrote down what worked and what caused my digital paintings to fail. Now I am pretty decent. I am still not at where I want to be but I hit that foundation where I can make decent digital portraits. I created a method that will reproduce products of similar quality. I recently posted a self portrait on my channel and realized I neglected the right side. It only took 15 mins to go back in the software and finish that side but me forgetting about it was another thing I wrote down to be vigilant for lol. Keep practicing, if you hit a wall sit and think about what's going right and what went wrong. If you can't extract the problem to solve. Try finding videos or someone who can teach you how to. I know myself now after countless time and failures so I can isolate where the problem is coming from.

I was always confident in my drawing. But my painting was always lacking. I really wanted to get good because I thought it would make my life better. Eventually its a kind of ego self sabatoge. The past year or so I realized how damn good I feel when I paint. So I started allowing myself to paint with the foremost goal of enjoyment. I keep my aim or goal/idea for a picture extremely simple. My over all goal is to try and paint everyday. After doing that for a while and building momentum ive noticed a great change in my attitude/mental state.
