I am originally from the eastern part of Cuba and live now in Louisville, Kentucky. I remember seeing painted buntings flying along with Cuban grassquits. I still remember the first time I saw one on a wet early morning in a grassy area and I was amazed to see such a colorful bird. I am 60 years old now and I must have been 10 when that happened and I still remember that moment. I have seen indigo buntings here in Kentucky, but I have never seen a painted bunting. Migratory birds like the indigo bunting, the painted bunting, and the rose-breasted grosbeak start arriving in Cuba in September and October and leave at the end of March and early April.

We have had them at our bird feeder for the first time ever! My Aunt Ozelle told me to keep watching for them and I would eventually see one. She was right but we waited over twenty years. Worth the wait!!

I do have painted buntings at my feeders in the summer. I am in the southern coast of NC, and I feel very blessed to see them here. It is my understanding that they are very rare here and only came up this far in the last 15 -20 years maybe? I have had them for the last 5 summers at least. They are beautiful, and they excite me so much. Thank you for the information about them. 😁

we are just north of Tampa,we have eight pairs of female and male painted buntings at our feeders all winter long every year,our backyard has hibiscus and a variety of mature bushes which they stay in,we also provide clean fresh watering stations,they seem to get along well as I have watched four males all sharing the same feeder,of course this is not mating season

I set up feeders in my yard this year…I’m in Royal Palm Beach Florida… I have two males and two females that visit my feeders daily. They seem to prefer the caged tube feeders. I saw the females first I thought they were green finches and a few days later I spotted the male and realized they were female buntings… absolutely beautiful birds
@FloridaKeysBirding10 ай бұрын
Yes I’ve also noticed they like. The caged tube feeders best! This is definitely their time of year so enjoy them for the next few months for sure!

I’ve had 4-5 come to the yard since about 2017. Usually arrive in late September-October (saw a male once in late August) and leave around the first of May. Last year two remained till May 9th. Besides white millet, they like the little berries of rouge plant (rivina humilus), seeds of ‘wild bamboo’ (lasiacus divaricata), and the fruits of gumbo limbo. Some unusual things include Cape honeysuckle- they, along with cardinals, eat the flowers (!) and drink the sweet liquid from ‘extra-foliar nectaries’ found on the leaves of wild tamarind (lysiloma). These are intended to attract ants that protect the foliage, but the buntings, and some warblers, often steal it. They really are something else. I’m in Miami, so the plants I mentioned are common in south Florida. Thanks for the video!

Yes!! I have these plants as well, they do well the Florida keys! 😉 my cardinals and buntings also like my fire spike plant😄

I finally have a painted bunting coming to my feeder outside of San Antonio, TX at the edge of the hill country. He has been coming since the end of May 2023. Most of our trees are oak, elm and cedar. This is the first time I have ever had a bunting at my feeder. I have seen one at a nearby neighbor's feeder but never at mine. I feel so lucky and thoroughly enjoy seeing him each morning. I wasn't sure what the female looked like so your video has helped and now I will look for her.

That so awesome to hear!!! Looks like you have the western migration species breeding in summer in your area. Painted buntings can take a while to find a new feeder so keep your feeder stocked, and they will most likely return each year and stay till the end of the season!

They do look like a tiny parrot/escaped pet - I'm glad you said it because I've always thought that. Right out of the crayon box SO true! I have sooo many of these around this time of year...so fun to listen to....but gosh they're so tiny they're hard to for me to locate in the trees. The males really do fuss with eachother. Thanks for a great bunting video!

A male crashed into my window. I found him on the ground, out cold! Held him and admired the unusual coloring. I set him on my knee as I sat down. He looked around for about one minute the flies off into a nearby tree. His bright color pattern looked like what a six year old child would color a bird! A royal blue head with a thin gold band around his neck where the color changed to a red breast. A grey back with a large round spot (of a different color, not sure of this color) on his back. This is central Texas.
