A lot of work. It’s beautiful but worth it…..glad you didn’t paint! Have you ever used Odies oil which you could tint. Look up Angie at Transcenf furniture and you can get that Matt finish and color toning without having to build up a finish

What I love about your work is that you don't automatically paint but restore to the bare wood. That dresser is beautiful. I have 2 antique end tables with the same black finish (maybe even worse) that i plan to tackle this spring. You've taught me a lot. And I plan to go dark. 😊 Thank you!

Dang, you are so patient! I would've been cursing and stomping! I love the lines and integrated harware, too. It turned out lovely due to your perseverance. Thanks for sharing your difficulties and solutions. I have had good luck leaving the oxalic acid on overnight, sometimes it takes 3 applications to get those stubborn stains out. I neutralize with a baking soda and water wash then rinse with clean water to be sure it is all removed.

I love this design. Especially the recessed drawer pulls. (The active ingredient in Barkeepers Friend IS oxyalic acid.) Using the paint wash to cure the overspray was a brilliant idea. Using deep center paper plates is a great idea, too. Toss it when done and no more cleanup. As for the top, I admire your persistence at getting it right. Every now and then we run across a project like this that tests our patience and our skills. You applied both very well. I appreciate that you kept going until it was right. It's beautiful. Job well done.

Nothing ever goes quite the way we plan it. It has been several years since I stripped a piece of cabinet furniture but I do recall switching from the 3M and Kleenstrip brands to CitrusStrip because it was more pleasant to work with. I worked in sections applying stripper and laying plastic over it until the paint was lifted and I did not have to worry about the product drying out before I got it all scraped off. Everyone develops their own techniques and it looks like yours worked well for you. You achieved a beautiful result thanks to perseverance, elbow grease and attention to detail (key ingredients for a quality outcome) Well done :)

I used to love Citristrip but they changed the formula and now it doesn’t work very well. 😢 I’m still on the hunt for a better finish stripper.

Interesting to see how you experiment with the tones. I like the darker colour you finished with vs the initial. It is a handsome piece so much better than just painting it and in keeping with its period but a touch more modern. It's a lot easier to use metric measurements as they are decimal based. Also, hypodermic type measured syringes are much simpler than calculating fractions of a teaspoon.

Really nice look! Not sure why you chose the paint wash but I'm really glad you didn't paint! I might have considered a gel stain like Candlelight for a real MCM vibe. Perhaps walnut on the hardware for a little contrast? It looked like a different wood on my screen than the body of the dresser.

I think when I saw the raw wood of that one drawer I got fixated on a light finish. A mid tone like Candlelight would have been beautiful. Sometimes there are so many possibilities, it’s hard to settle on one. 😊
