everyone has their own way of doing things, but my dad is 79 years old, has had his painting business since 1974 and he's done a lot of high end work and in our area. He's old school in that he doesn't allow music on job sites, when it's time to work its time to work. For him, he always said that customers understand that pants and cloths can get dirty but my dad's rule was that if the job consisted of a lot of sanding, the shirt should be changed everyday and try and change the pants every other day and also to make sure the cloths do not smell either. In terms of neatness, customers look more at how neat you are on the job site and that at the end of each day to clean up, vacuum, and to put all the supplies in one neat area. Then of course communication is the key, tell the customer what you will be doing each day, if you're going to sand, explain that it will be dusty, if you're painting tell them that if you are using an oil based finish, like Satin Impervo, on the doors, windows and trim that there will be a smell, if you're working in the suburbs, customers sometimes like to take a look at your van or truck and see how neat it is and if that's neat they will know you will be neat on the job, the cloths are really the last thing they look at.

I am professional painter and the pants I switched too are from Duluth Trading Company. I like a light weight material and their dry of the fly line is fantastic. Their design for the crotch is amazing as it totally increases your range of motion getting up and down ladders, on and off scaffolding and just getting up off your knees. The only down side is that they don’t come in white.

I cut up my old t-shirts into rags, since they want $15 a bag for rags that are cut up factory second t-shirts anyways. Dickies extra-long tall pocket tees to eliminate PB. Around 10 bucks, not too thin. When my Dickies pants get trashed or holes in the knees, I have my them cut off and hemmed into shorts for the messier exterior season. Used to love Carolina 309 work boots until they stopped making them with USA parts this year. Now their dual density soles are hard as a rock. Had over a dozen pairs in 4E, looking for a replacement, cushy soles and shank for ladder work a must. Sad to see USA manufacturing go down.

Dickies now makes the Flex fit with cooling technology built in. I believe They just came out. Its the first time ive seen them. They arent heavy and stiff as hell like they always are. They are lightweight now and breathable. They have a big red circle sticker on them that says "Flex Cool". Look for em and pick a pair up. They are so comfortable now and keeps you cool. You can feel the air flowing through. No more sweaty balls and asscrack. And no more stiff as hell fabric. Only like 23 bucks. Can buy 3 pairs of these for cheaper then 1 pair of those 80 dollar pants. I'll never wear anything different now. The one negative I guess I found with these is if you wear black briefs/underwear, you can kind of see the darkness coming through the white pants. But I believe that's with most white pants.

I wear Dickies, the poly cotton blend ones are most comfortable. They're cheap, have deep back pockets so your dusting brush doesn't fall out, putty knife and razor knife pocket on each side...just a good value. For ladder work bib overalls are best because of the chest pockets - take your sandpaper and a ball of glazing putty up there with you and don't need to come back down. I have a pair of Blaklader with knee pockets and pads if I plan to be on my knees all day. But they are too heavy for most days.

Dickies are just as tough and can get padded knees too! $20 each and are very comfy! T shirts, for what it cost for a Paint Life shirt, I can go to Wallyworld and get a 3 and sometimes a 6 pack of 100% cotton white T's. I'm a pro licensed painter here in Hawaii I alternate between all white shorts and pants and yes dressing the part is important. Chris' 5% dirty rule is fine for him but as for me, I think at work is one rule of thumb and being around clients, another rule of thumb does apply for myself and my crew. I get dirty every day at work as it is unavoidable. My shoes are Salomon trail runners and they last me from one to two years and are light weight and extremely durable. I get the discontinued lines and save a bundle. I find boots clunky and quite frankly dangerous on a ladder! With great respect to The Idaho Painters, we are all a bit different and with different perspectives and as pros, we all have one thing in common, our work speaks for itself. Much Aloha to you all! An old timer (from Philly) in the cleaning business (window washing) told me in the mid-80s that service businesses are “60% show and 40% go,” meaning that if I show and clean a window and am dressed like a pro window washer, and another guy shows up looking unshaven, dirty, smelly, looking like he just dragged himself out of a drunken stooper, my window will look better to the customer From my life experience (I’m 73), most painters look like bums.
