For a sanding quide coat, I've used some chalk line powder in an old sock. You can get it in your local big box hardware store and is very inexpensive. Just shake the sock a bit and rub it on. It's better than the spray guide coat paint because it does not gum up your sandpaper and washes off easily with water.

I’d never heard of that before. I’ve been using a dry black guide powder which I guess works in a similar way 😊

A man after my own heart. I find this interesting as among my cars I have an MGA roadster and a Defender 90 300Tdi. Also a full set of never used GRP wings and front valance.
@Als.GarageАй бұрын
I found it quite hard to source good quality replacement steel wings. They fit so much better than fibreglass ones
@awalk5177Ай бұрын
@@Als.Garage All the wings on my roadster are steel originals. Ive had this set of GRP wings for over 40 years, and if needed , yes they would need fettling, but that is an easy job with GRP.

As a painter for 47yrs i would have used spray filler over the whole body and guide coat , block sand then 2pack high build primer (Lechler). Your doing a great job and i with you luck with the final paint job 👍
@Als.GarageАй бұрын
Thanks for your advice Jimmy. I wish I’d asked for comments earlier as spray filler is definitely the way to go. I’ll be doing that if I do another car. What product would you recommend?
@jimmypratt6450Ай бұрын
@@Als.Garage There's many on the market but i find Novol is the one i go for its expensive and i've used on my classic scooter .
@matton36Ай бұрын
i used to use spray filler but it absobs moisture and it sinks back over time. I found it better just to use primer filler twice and just dry long block down the first application, recoat it and block it wet as normal.

I am sure the finish you will achieve will be outstanding.

Just come across your channel and subbed. I use dolphin glaze filler for minor imperfections and spray a guide coat of darker colour .Find that helps show highs and lows when sanding flatting primer . Your doing a nice job of it . Regards Rich from the wirral.
@Als.GarageАй бұрын
Thanks Rich for your advice. Do you need to re epoxy prime after using Dolphin Glaze?
@richardmounfield7822Ай бұрын
@@Als.Garage I would say yes because its filler so would want it sealed so it has same coating as metal work .
@chrisward3605Ай бұрын
When I was spraying in the 70s we used primer filla and cellulose paint if you had a run it was dry in 10 mins then you could flat it down happy days
@richardmounfield7822Ай бұрын
Good old days with celly remember using spray putty and it was like flatting rock down once hardened.
@matton36Ай бұрын
Not really, a cellulose run which is blocked out on the same day will reappear as a sink back two weeks later. If you bake 2k in an oven you can block out a run with less chance of sink back.

Excellent work. Can you give a overview of the hardware you're using; your gun (HVLP or LVLP) and nozzle size, compressor and the mask? I notice you're not using an air fed? I too will be using my garage to paint, sometime in the future, so it's really encouraging to see the standard of finish you are achieving.
@Als.GarageАй бұрын
I’m using an inexpensive gravity gun with a 1.4 nozzle. I’ve got an old compressor, but it’s big probably 250l. I’ll show the setup in the next video 😊

It’s looking great Al. Looks like you are getting a good finish straight from the gun? With all those coats going on, you are getting good practice for the top coat!

Doing a great job but please buy a better mask. The Gerson 2k mask if you can’t get an air fed.

@T3gliderАй бұрын
You should have organic chemical filters on your mask, not dust filters!

Thanks for your advice. I’ve bought a new mask now. I’ll show you in the next video
@matton36Ай бұрын
As a pro auto restorer, just a tip mate, you absolutely should never put filler onto bare metal. Put epoxy primer down first because otherwise it WILL rust under the filler and then fall out over time.
@Als.GarageАй бұрын
Wow great tip. I’m not sure if there are places I did that. I’ll check. I hope it doesn’t give me problems in the future
