I had the same problem when I first started out in my DIY garage. didn't have enough money for a decent compressor. Almost impossible to get a good gun rhythm going with all the start/stops. I quit painting for awhile after this. Once I got a 5hp compressor it was off to the races. Good recovery on your part though. I felt your pain.

What horsepower compressor do you recommend to maintain enough pressure? I used to work in a large body shop and never had to worry about pressure but at home I need something for family cars and need to know. Thank you, great video!!!!

Hey John, the requirements al depend on the demand of the spray gun you are using, as you’ll know bigger guns need more cfm and vice versa, usually a good brand 3hp with a 50L tank will give out around 15cfm, there is pressure drop to consider with length of airline etc but if you want to use a larger spray gun I would be looking at 5.5 hp and upwards to make sure you don’t suffer any major pressure drops or issues, that’s based on a piston compressor, the Bodyshop you worked in would have had a screw compressor or possibly a hydrovane but usually screw compressors are only available in larger capacity outputs, hope that helps bud 👍

Hey mate, I just heard the bit before the gun change and figured I’d say the ANI Spray gun is not an Iwata. I think that’s what I heard, When you said you had a smaller gun and it was an ANI, Iwata… You did the best you could with that setup mate! 👍

I’m not entirely sure why I said that to be honest bud 🤣 my brain is all over the place when filming lol although if you’ve not given it a go I really rate the ani f160 for clear, I’ll shoot a test a review vid on it soon too 👍

@@custombodyrepair No worries! I have most every model Ani makes, and I think they’re great spray guns, but in my opinion, they are Air HOGS!!! With that setup it probably would’ve been nice to go with an LVLP spray gun. You definitely did the best you could with what you were dealt. Earned my sub, Cheers mate! 💯

I've got a eaton 10hp screw drive the air output on that is like painting with a airless paint sprayer

@@custombodyrepair man I struggled for yrs and I was getting oil in my air lots of solvent pop I finally pulled the plug spent 5k and got a compressor will run 6 people at one time

@@rongamble9884 you wonder how you ever managed once you’ve moved on to something that does the job, we were very much the same for the first few years of the business mate, started with a 50L piston, killed 5 or 6 of them, went to a 7.5 hp 200L killed that after another 3 years but then just bit the bullet and got the 11kw screw and I’d never look back now

do you need some sort of extraction or is a good mask ok as im thinking of giving it a go on a mini im restoring

It’s ideal to have some sort of extraction but so long as your respirator is rated for solvents you’ll be fine for 1 car, it’s possible to rig up an extractor out of all sorts though I built out workshop one from an old filing cabinet that I mounted a centrifugal fan in, cut an outlet in the back and made a grid for the front to house a filter and it works insanely well so for almost no money and with a bit of ingenuity you can come up with something that works, between that and a good mask you’ll be well away, feel free to give us a shout if you need any hints or tips around the time you paint it buddy 👍

I'm sure you did since drain all water traps but gonna ask anyway speaking from self experience. Did you drain the compressor it's self ? Found it make a huge difference. Lol compressor it's self 3hp obviously 2 stage shouldn't have any problem. But water in tank especially a small tank restricts air capacity.

Ps kinda painful to watch lol reminds me of painting with the old wheelbarrow compressor and a siphon feed old-school paint gun lol a professional challenge !

The good old days aye mate 🤣 it’s a nightmare when the kit just isn’t up to it really I guess, I did drain this compressor but oddly it only had a litre or so in it, I expected it to dump loads of water out to be honest

When we have a reputation sometimes others just don't understand. Then again I think we are much harder on ourselves than anyone else could be . Carry on the good work buddy !

I get you mate but they would have painted it regardless and didn’t have as good a respirator as me which was partly another reason we agreed to tackle it 👍
