Really helped me a lot thank you. I struggle with backgrounds and I’m working on a Lion and this has really me a place to start

If you are from Yorkshire, like me, and don't want to fork out the extra for a block pad, just go around the edges of a normal pad with a couple of coats of PVA. Leave a little gap so you can get a knife in. Works a treat.

Hi Gillian, I'm a Derbyshire lad so not too far from you. Thank you for the excellent tip and yes, I'm also one for making a saving and also 'make do'. Paul :-)

What are your favourite colours for working on a background? *Leave me a comment* , I would love to know. Why not have a go yourself at painting a bird of prey in watercolor - this FREE video will show you how: bit.ly/3lXxQar

@Zeb You do think the same way I do Zeb regarding background colours. It can also depend on the subject you are painting and using some subjects colours within the background to help the painting gel together a little more. Paul 🎨

Recently dug my watercolours out ( again) I’m STILL rubbish, but enjoyed playing with them 😂 I still prefer my coloured pencils, BUT, thank you so much for this background lesson Paul ....I struggle with backgrounds, and I love this effect 👌 will definitely be trying it with my drawings. You’re a great teacher! 🙏

You're welcome Lynn, CP's is something I've not tried for many years, maybe I will dig out my old Prismacolors again. :-)

Light blue 💙 I love blue for my backgrounds. I find it hard to paint a clear sky though :(

You can do it Daniela, try to wet the background with clean water more than once before starting, just to give you a bit more working time when adding those colours. Paul 🎨

@@TheDevonArtist Thank you so much Paul :) your video and now your advice gives me more confidence with the water. To be honest, I'm afraid of my paper warping and this video is the first one I see that doesn't tell you how to perfectly stop the paper from warping but to work with it, like it's perfectly normal for the paper to do that. In my next drawing I'll make sure to stretch my paper the best I can, use enough water and don't freak out when the paper warps 😅

@@ela_fromspace Spot on thinking Daniela, be positive and you know you can do this. Paul :-)

What are the colors & what size is the reference photo? It looks quite large in the picture where you are holding your painting. TIA Deb
