Did you gesso the blade first?

I used a few layers of kilz primer.

I've been wanting to try painting a couple old saw blades my husband has, but he says I need to sand them down to bare metal, otherwise the rust will bleed through. I'm curious what prep you do to get your blade ready for paint.
