Thanks for the words of encouragement. Sometimes I panic when I make a mistake!!! Do you ever start a painting and become bored or uninspired during it and put it away? I have 3 on the back burner that I can't seem to finish. Great painting. Thanks for these videos. Take care! Happy Painting ♡

Mistakes teach us big lessons that we can incorporate in future pieces. While at the time they might be frustrating they can actually be wildly beneficial, so don't worry about them :) In regards to being uninspired, I'm kind of in a different scenario than you are. I make a living off of painting so I have to do it regardless of if I'm inspired or not, which I actually think is good in the long run. You see, if we only ever painted when we were inspired we wouldn't really paint that often. We wouldn't put the time in to become extremely proficient at the techniques involved. Due to this lack of practice when we are inspired we might not be able to render that which we have in our heads. That is a sad reality. For that reason I always implore people to paint regardless of if they are inspired or not. Practice is important. With that being said, I also have a number of unfinished pieces around my studio. That is normal. I think as long as you're working on something you're progressing and moving towards your goals. I hope that kind of helps :)

Ryan O'Rourke - Artist OMGoodness, those were wonderful words to read!!!!!! You are very wise. I took a peek on your Instagram page and started following you and thought your paintings were wonderful. I decided last night I am going to try to paint everyday. I suffer with Multiple Sclerosis and some days I deal with huge amounts of pain and many horrible side effects that go along with having M.S., but I am going to push through and paint. That is kinda how me painting started. I felt I was waisting my life away just sitting in my chair, painting has helped me get up, use my brain and I am loving this new journey in my life. Thanks to you and other painting tatorials I am finding joy. Thanks for always responding to us who comment, it really means alot to us who follow you. Have a great weekend & Happy Painting. ♡

Love the videos, they are great inspiration. Do you think you'll ever include a peak of your palette? Clearly many of your colors are mixed beforehand and I'd just like to know how you arrange it to prevent them muddling together or drying out.

I'm glad that you're enjoying the series! I actually get that request fairly frequently and have considered including my palette. However, when I do these quick pieces my palette is generally a complete mess. It's not something I would implore people to copy. With that being said I am planning on releasing a new series of hour long lessons and during those I will use a proper, well organized palette that I will share with the audience :)

I really apreciate your 10 minutes Acrylics. I´m getting a lot faster with it and they inspire me to do others. Can you do a picture like you did above with more details in the foregroud, like grass or a path. This is always my problem and I mess up always with the foreground. I see in your pictures the same that you jump right away in the Lake and there is not much in the foreground, except a big tree. Do you have other solutions, how to create another or other quick foregrounds. Anyway thanks a lot for your inspirations and good explications. :)

Really love this one! Glad you are feeling better. 😊 I do have a question for you. Do you use gesso? Could you explain the pros and cons of using gesso? I'm confused about it and can't seem to find answers. Thanks so much for your videos. I love them!
@RyanORourkeArtist
@RyanORourkeArtist 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! In short, gesso will smooth your painting surface. It will lessen the tooth texture of the canvas and render something more slick. Most canvas (all white canvas) comes pre-gessoed. However, you can apply additional layers to make the surface softer. The slicker the surface the more delicate detail you can incorporate. However, you will probibly have to apply additional layers as the paint won't hold to the surface well and you will render semi-transparent areas. I personally don't use additional gesso as I have an affinity for a textured painting surface. I hope that helps!

Which black do you prefer, Ivory or Mars Black? Or does it depend on the technique?
@RyanORourkeArtist
@RyanORourkeArtist 7 жыл бұрын
From a technical perspective Mars black is a warmer pigment while Ivory is cold. Ivory also tends to render a darker black but it all depends upon the brand. With that being said I exclusively use Mars black because it is made from Iron oxide while Ivory black is made from charred bones/ivory... and I just don't feel ethically ok with using paint derived from those sources. I hope that helps! PS. If you ever find yourself with with oils it's important to note that Ivory black will dry darker, more reflective, and has the tendency to crack. Mars black will be lighter, dry without any reflective qualities and shouldn't crack.

Ryan O'Rourke - Artist Thank you so much for the clarification! It was truly useful. All I have is a tube of Mars black and I was wondering if the other one was really necessary.

Amazing painting! I had a quick question: What do you use to do the rough sketch on the canvas? I always try to use very light pencil, but it still manages to show through the paint. :/
@RyanORourkeArtist
@RyanORourkeArtist 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I actually use Crayola pencil crayons. They allow me to play with color and more importantly don't dilute bright pigments like yellow/white the way pencil/charcoal does. It may not sound like the most professional medium but it's really effective.
@karlaheald2602

Thank you for the reply! I never thought of using the Crayola pencil crayons, but that is a great idea! And it sounds affordable so that is also a plus. :) I'm actually setting up to paint along now, wanted to do it two weeks ago, but I finally now have the time. Looking forward to more videos from you, thank you for uploading them, and happy painting!! :)

Am I allowed to base a painting off of yours and turn it in to school?
@amdza
@amdza 7 жыл бұрын
What I do is find a similar reference photo and follow along to the best of my ability. I personally feel drawing from a photograph while following along helps me better understand what he's teaching, since his paintings are already simplified for our edification. You'll never find an identical reference photo to his paintings, but I think he's trying to teach us concepts that can be used for any painting rather than one specific one. Plus, since this is for a grade, you can avoid potential problems for plagiarism. I know my school is really cracking down, so I'd rather not tempt fate.

Don’t get discouraged, these things just take time and practice. If we were to watch a tutorial on playing guitar or surfing we could probably grasp the main concepts and understand ‘what we are supposed to do’… But because we haven’t yet practiced the endeavor we probably won’t be great at it (yet). The same idea applies to painting. Keep practicing and you will get to where you'd like to be.
