In this video the first of three, I'll demonstrate the process of painting a kitchen using Farrow and Ball paints, a renowned choice for interior decoration. Painting a kitchen is akin to painting any other room in your home, but with a few specific considerations. You'll need to apply paint to the ceiling, walls, and woodwork using the appropriate Farrow and Ball system.
First things first, proper preparation is key. Ensure that surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any grease or dirt. Sand down any rough patches and fill in any holes or cracks with filler. This will provide a smooth base for the paint and ensure a professional finish.
Next, apply a primer or undercoat suitable for the surface you're painting. Farrow and Ball offer a range of primers and undercoats designed to enhance adhesion and provide a consistent base for the topcoat. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times.
Once the primer is dry, it's time to apply the topcoat. Farrow and Ball paints are known for their rich pigments and depth of colour, so choose your desired shade and apply evenly with a high-quality brush or roller. Multiple thin coats are preferable to one thick coat, as this will help to avoid drips and ensure a smooth, even finish.
Remember to allow sufficient drying time between coats, as rushing this step can lead to poor results. And don't forget to protect your floors and furniture with dust sheets or plastic sheeting to avoid any accidental spills or splatters.
This video builds upon previous tutorials on painting kitchen units, so if you're looking to give your entire kitchen a makeover, be sure to check those out for additional tips and tricks.
With the right tools, materials, and techniques, painting your kitchen with Farrow and Ball paints can be a rewarding DIY project that adds a touch of elegance and personality to your home. So roll up your sleeves and let's get painting!

10.8k Well done Phil. Videos are enjoyable to watch. Started referring customers to watch your videos for the paint reviews to give them an idea on paints they might like to have. Plus it also gives customers an idea of how much goes into painting & decorating correctly when they think we are over charging on the price. Keep the videos coming mate.

I sell F&b and I know the cans can be confusing but unfortunately we would have to change the labels in the printer for each product which would be very difficult and create mistakes with people using the wrong label. I agree F&b should have different cans for each finish like most other brands. We have suggested to their rep on numerous occasions about having the undercoats closer in colour to topcoats. Maybe if more stockists and customers suggest it it might happen . It would be very easy to do now that most shops mix it in store ,

The labels could be blank and the printer prints the background colour of a different paint. Thanks for commenting though.

Customer got f&b moles breath and stiff key blue for some feature walls…. You can see the cutting in from outer space ….. she then got similar colors in Dulux trade vinyl Matt for other rooms …. 2 coats without any issues whatsoever … whereas 3 coats of f&b and a shocking finish ! Twice as much to buy and utter garbage , but the lighter color she got in f&b went on a dream…. The dark colors have got there problems!

Question if I may please Phil. As a DIYer I’m familiar with kitchen and bathroom specific paints and the premise that something with a bit of a sheen (soft sheen, eggshell, durable matt) may be used in kitchens due to wipeability and moisture resistance. You used estate emulsion on the ceiling which surprised me as I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that you would need something less chalky/porous. Would you usually have a customer specify a standard matt for a kitchen ceiling or a more specialist paint designed for that job/location? Thanks 👍🏻

depends how much steam build up a room can get. My bathroom ceiling is a cheap contract matt .. no issues. Shiny ceilings never loook good lol

Well played, Phil. Congrats on the subscribers. I have a question, or maybe a request. I haven't seen anyone on KZbin demonstrate how to get a brushmark-free finish on woodwork with either oil-based or water-based paint, even when using a conditioner - there's never any real close-ups. I'm a joiner and spray all my builds, and if there's some existing woodwork involved I'll usually spray that too. But sometimes customers will ask for a small section of existing woodwork to be painted which is too small to get the sprayer out, sheet up etc. The only way I can get anywhere close to a completely flat finish with a brush is to obviously sand back flat first, then put the paint on as heavy as possible (and very quickly) without it looking like it will run, any less paint and it always leaves the odd brushmark - I have very (anal) fussy customers who go round with a magnifying glass afterwards. Problem is, trying to load on the paint this thick inevitably lands you with the odd run, and one run is one too many. Easier to get close to completely flat with oil-based, but water-based is a bugger, and very few people want to go for oil anyway. Any tips, or is it something you might do a video on?

ScuffX flows out really well. A 5mm 2 fussy blokes roller and some Benjamin Moore conditioner is a near spray finish. If the customer is that fussy, charge the extra and get HVLP out to spray the bits needed. £££

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Cheers, Phil. Will give the 2 Fussy Blokes roller a go. Must admit I've struggled to find a roller/sleeve that I've been totally happy with. Would you ever consider rolling a busy profiled architrave and skirting to achieve a spray-like finish or would you always brush it?

Acid catalysed is hard wearing but is extremely hazardous & really needs to be used in the booth. I've used a few different waterborne paints and I quite like caparol 2k pu lac. I think it's a polyurethane but with hardening additive you pour in and mix. I coat Primer/undercoat (2 on bare MDF edges) and two top coats. I like it

@@Liverpool1ne there are lots of better paints than farrow & ball. Especially for kitchen cabinets. No one has time for extra coats of f & b when even Aqua guard is good generally after 2 coats. Benjamin Moore is great but not so easy to get hold of. Let’s face it F and B is the go to brand, not the go to trade paint!

Hello Phil. I hope you're open to some constructive criticism. Being a painter and decorator, I do watch some of your videos but I must say, you are painful to watch. David Brent immediately springs to mind in mannerism and annoyance. Wearing the KZbin T-shirts and bragging about subscribers is a bit cringeworthy to be honest. You've obviously made a great start and good luck with it, but please tone it down a bit. And shorten the videos. Less is more. I will add that I have had a a few colleagues and other trades watch and they all said the same. Annoying rather than informative. The Barbados video takes the biscuit.
