Used F&B for the first time this week. First job was restoring an old door that'd been dipped, then stained and varnished. Wasn't sure what the finish was so used BIN, followed by the recommended undercoat and two coats of Estate Eggshell. Second was outside doors over oil gloss, so they've had BIN Aqua followed by the undercoat and Exterior Eggshell. Expensive, mind. Interior door was green, and I reckon they must have added finely crushed jade to justify the price. But I don't mind the extra cost because they look fantastic. Really pleased with the results. The luminosity of the paint gives a really nice shaded 3D effect to the mouldings around the panels as the light hits it from different angles. 10/10 will be using it for all the other doors and windows in the rest of the house.

The things some people will do for a free t shirt lol , I’m a big fan of the F&B range of paints especially the modern emulsion I’ve used it quite a few times ,I love the range of darker colours they do due to better quality of pigments they use you can achieve a really deep looking finish, totally agree about the labels all being the same colours and the lack of trade discount although to be fair I don’t think they are aiming at the trade market .it’s a paint which sometimes un fairly in my opinion gets a rough ride in the trade probably due to price . Another good and interesting video Phil keep them coming all the best .

Our house is a 3yo new build and the plan is to use F&B paints on woodwork and walls/ceilings etc. Would you recommend using undercoat on all surfaces or would 2 coats of F&B be enough. Thanks Jason
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Жыл бұрын
Hi. No, do it properly. Use the correct Primer/UC for the colour you'll be finishing with. Modern eggshell is a great finish to use. Ceilings, you'll already have a light colour on already, so if doing them with a light colour Estate Emulsion you will get away with two coats. Walls, if it's a cheap contract Matt paint on now, you may well benefit for using the wall/ceiling primer on the correct tone for the top coat. If you don't you may be putting extra coats on anyway. And the primer coat is cheaper than top coat and it's there to aid the coverage for top coats. Modern emulsion is great for walls. Won't mark so easy.

if it's new wood, give it a thinner forst coat to act as the primer so it soaks in, then you can give it a sand, stop up, fill and caulk as required... then give it all the UC, Then the two top coats. That will give you the best result. Don't try and do a primer and Uc in one go.. that's not the Idea.

Thank you for this very informative video. I love F&B paint but have been told many times by the uninitiated that it was a waste of money, and also I did wonder if there was a good reason professional painters and decorators dont like it. Now I have my argument🤗 I just have one question: on previously painted plasterboard which has been previously painted, do I need to use an undercoat for Estate Emulsion, or can I just paint two coats on top of what is already there? I was in two minds about painting my front door in gloss, I live in Norway and we do have good paint for a very cold climate, but I am going to use F&B. Do I need an undercoat on a previously painted door? Would you do more than two coats? Thank you.
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator2 жыл бұрын
When using F&B I'd always use their primer undercoat before putting two top coats on. With the emulsion, you won't need the wall/ceiling primer coat really, unless you're doing ba big colour change.

Hi, Do you have any advice on painting a uPVC front door? I'm thinking of using the De Nimes (No.299) exterior eggshell with the dark tones exterior wood primer? I'm concerned that some of the photos in the review change in colour between blue to grey - would I get more of the blue colour if I go for a different primer? (Sorry, I'm completely new to painting my home!)
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Have you seen my other videos on painting uPVC? You'll put two top coats of exterior eggshell on the door, so either exterior Mid tones or Dark tones will be fine... DeNimes is quite dark isn't it? I did it on kitchen units a few years ago. Look ace. Clean down your door well and give a light sand with a scotch Brite pad to scratch the surface slightly... Then put a grip primer coat on first.. Zinsser 123 Plus, would be ideal. Let That dry then you can put the f&b exterior Uc on.

Been using farrow and ball for over 30 years I'm sure the emulsion was better back then, ie. Covered in two coats . When I customer is thinking about using Farrow and ball on the walls, I say right you need farrow and ball base coat which about £60 then 2 coats of colour 3 coats in total which will be more in Labour. They usually go for a copy probably in Johnstone's about £50 or another make . Farrow and ball only work on this system .

So I came to the UK from Toronto in 2015 and when I used F&B first time, it was pain and frustrating because most of the f&b paint needed 3-4-5 coats! Now I good paint should always be 2 coats strictly, no more, otherwise you get into problems with guessing how many coats will need which leads getting trouble with labour, material pricing etc. In Canada if you paint a black or very dark wall back to white, it is 1 coat white primer, 2 coats white finish paint. Any other situation 2 coats!! With F&B in 2015 was if you painted a dark colour on a freshly mist coated wall, it took 3-4 coats to fully cover which is absolutely nonsense and unacceptable. It was due to poor pigment, poor paint. So I agreed with many painters that F&B being the most expensive paint in UK is poor quality! However as a professional painter you need to keep up with trend and paint quality each year since thankfully these paint companies spend time and money into improving their products and important to always give the best advice to your customers based on the current market. Happy to say that using F&B each year finally I can say that in 2020-2021 it got to a level where most colours you get away with 2 coats and get full opacity on walls. Paint improved drastically in a good way and finally can use it without any worry, especially because Farrow and Ball has the best colour palette which suits the most for British styled homes. My point is that at the beginning of your video you should ve stated that Farrow&Ball was poor but they improved so people who hated it back in a days, give it another try because the paint did change each year! Otherwise great video, keep up the good work!
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator3 жыл бұрын
have you tried the wall & Ceiling primer coat that they advise to put on first?
@rnarno3 жыл бұрын
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I only use their undercoat if it is necessary. Let’s say if you paint freshly plastered walls, mist coated so they are white, buy any wall paint, it should be 2 coats no less no more. If it is more, then the paint is poor. If you have to apply a separate undercoat from the same colour as the finish paint will be, then this brand definitely not worth buying for tradesman and or for customers, to pay a higher price for the paint and then they have to pay more for labour to get it done, that would be absolutely nonsense. In Canada the better, more expensive paint you get, the less work you actually have to do. And that is how it is make sense. Benjamin Moore is one of the best there, after 1 coat it is 95% opacity so the second coat just makes it perfect. And that paint cost $80-90 per tin. You should only use primer/ undercoat if the surface requires for sticking reason, or if you paint colours like yellow, red, orange, neon green etc. Or if you swapping deep-light colours. And by the way, if next time your sprayer cannot keep the pressure, try to replace the silicone rings, you can buy the pack for a few £. I had exactly same issue with two of my graco and it was serviced by graco but spent a fortune for it.
@ProfessionalPainterDecorator3 жыл бұрын
@@rnarno morning. The GXff I've been told doesn't have a service kit like that to swap rings, hence it has the pump exchange system. Since cleaning the rings and oiling the shaft it does seem better. I'll let you know how I get on. I think with f&b, if you have new plaster you'd wash coat with their wall and ceiling primer coat... In the correct 'tone' for the main colour that's going to be applied. Then two coats should cover. As with a lot of paint, if it's a vast difference in colour change, you can find three coats are required. A lot of White paint in the UK doesn't cover like it did. Cheap, false opacity paints all seem to cover well, but aren't hard wearing enough and you know it's false opacity if you splash water on it, it goes a grey colour and you can wipe it off with a damp sponge. Something that doesn't happen with f&b paint.
@rnarno3 жыл бұрын
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator yup, 100% agreed., wash coat can be done in the correct tone, thats an option too. And yes F&B is definitely hard wearing. Oh I see, my gx21 doesn’t seem to have the o ring repair kit either but they said they changed some rubber rings to prevent leak, that’s why pressure dropped. Apparently they didn’t change the pump kit…
