I know up close, you feel it looks blobby, but one thing I definitely learned from my favorite art teacher is that art like this is *meant* to be viewed at a distance. And it looks good! That's one of the coolest, but most intimidating things about painting like this. It feels like a LOT of commitment, but the reality is that you can keep messing with it and shapeless blobs and misplaced lines can look great if you play with it enough.

Exactly! And if the proliferation of the Impressionist movement is any indication, folks like 'blobby!' :)

They make transparent gesso btw. It's my fave for keeping wood textures. You can also take white gesso and tint it with paint to get a colored background. Gesso keeps the wood from soaking up ungodly amounts of paint. Definitely channeled your inner Bob Ross, just hopefully without the overtaking of his empire by greedy capitalists.

I love the boop boop and bop bop of the brush on the wood as she daps in the tree leaves. It has to be hard to paint on the wood, as she mentions the brush isn't liking the wood. Also the smooth flow of blending with the softer fabric like canvas or harder canvas material for acrylic paint even blends better allowing the acrylic just a bit more time before drying. The wood soaks it up a little with a drying effect, like needing more paint to saturate the wood. It still looks great, and like she mentions the wood texture changes the feel or perception of the parts of art piece. Awesome job Rin, I don't see a lot of artist who use acrylic anlot trying to paint the scenery realistically on wood. Usually they go fantastic colors. *Blots the papertowel over part of the clouds * Oooh that looks more cloud like....*blots morr papertowel* 🤗❤️👍🏽💯

I have a lil tip! This works mainly on paper/ white surfaces buy I reckon you could do it on wood. Use a Very watery paint to sketch and when you want to adjust/ fix parts use a different watery paint and eventually, you will have lots of different colours but because the paints are really watery, you can paint over them with ease

This makes me wonder how watercolors would react to a wood canvas…? I mean, woods so water-absorbing I feel like maybe it would just eat up your paints and the result look so faint? I’m not quite willing to use my only set of watercolors to test the theory, I’d cry if I ended up blazing through them (they’re the prima watercolor confections ones, vintage pastels)

The reason you need a gesso because the wood is so absorbent and will suck up your paint and the wood expands when it absorbs water and shrinks when it dries so the paint is prone to cracking quicker than it would have with gesso. Paint is more prone to cracking than gesso. As I saw someone already say in the comments, you can get a clear gesso if you still want to see the wood underneath. The painting looks great, I love your work ❤️.

This came out pretty nice. Just some tips based of what I’ve learnt from watching painters. It’s easier to start with the background without creating a foreground yet which u may want to keep. I noticed the trees u sketched were covered up with the blue paint and that’s not what u wanted. But instead of going through that, u could’ve painted the background first and then fill in your foreground gradually. This just makes things easier but your way still worked so if u r comfortable with this method, that’s fine. Very great video as usual😁

Michael's sells thin little bits of wood (usually near their wood burning tools) for very cheap. Slap some GAC on there to avoid potential mildew from trapped moisture, sand that baby down to avoid unnecessary texture, and boom. Super affordable,bite-size wood panel canvases!

There is just something about painting on wood that is so exciting

I honestly loved watching this, you did a wonderful job setting it up and scaling it especially the fact it's all on wood. I havent even tried that yet. - a small suggestion; if you leave a few dots of white on the island of trees - it would bring it a little bit livelier. Otherwise I enjoyed watching the process!
