I only ever use standard Nuln Oil, I like a matte finish and usually varnish to maximise this anyway.

@@TheHobbyGrotto generally, I'm not a fan of the Games Workshop aesthetic. In the early 80s, White Dwarf showed all manner of miniature designs. It was brilliant. At some point, however, a business decision was made to go with, and promote, the house style (ie. cartoony 2000AD). I understood the call, but it left me cold. And now, 40 years [bloody hell!] later, there are *some* really fine, dynamic yet restrained models coming out, as seen in some of these skeleton lines. I have no favourite shop/house, I try and buy (income willing) when I see something that says: ooh, err, made by someone who's studied both Frazetta and 18th century silversmiths - but I really enjoy it when someone complements a thoughtful miniature design with deft, and equally thoughtful, paint.

I'm definitely a fan of the older stuff. It's got a wonderful charm and simplicity to it that's often lacking in newer sculpts. I find you can be much more imaginative with these kinds of models too. Some of the new stuff is fantastic though, just a great time to be in the hobby really 😁

What brush do you use for the basecoats? Looks like it keeps it point really well.
@TheHobbyGrotto3 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry just replacing my previous response because I realised I'm actually using a cheap Mont Marte size 1 brush in combination with a Citadel Medium Layer brush for the basecoats here. The Mont Marte is the grey one. This video is slightly older footage, I'm currently using Army Painter Basecoat brushes as a replacement and I'm really happy with their performance 😀 The Mont Marte Gallery Series brushes are good for such a cheap price though, I still use their size 8 and 12 for drybrushing and washes.

Is it really needed to use Black as a primer? I got the skeleton Horde spray primer and i want to paint my army exactly like this. All seems overwhelming haha. Im curious if i need another base coat. Thx 4 the awesome video. Greets from The Netherlands.
@TheHobbyGrotto3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, glad you enjoyed the video. You could definitely try this painting technique over a lighter undercoat, as you are still going to get some shading from the Nuln Oil. I generally recommend a black undercoat for drybrushing like this mainly because it's going to create more contrast overall, which is great for the detail of skellies! 😃
@Aelnas19883 жыл бұрын
@@TheHobbyGrotto Awesome! just the answere i was looking for! :D If my eyes do not cheat me you used no paint for the shield? Like just the black base coat with the Nuln oil? I bought the Start Collecting Skeleton Horde so i am happy i found my colour scheme because of this vid!! A little scared to start but this helps a lot
@TheHobbyGrotto3 жыл бұрын
Definitely do a test model first with the lighter undercoat, but I think it should be fine. If the wash isn't making the model dark enough in the shading, you can also add a bit of black paint to the Nuln Oil. The shield itself is painted in the same Caliban Green colour as the loincloth, although without as many layers of highlights as it's a flat surface 😊
@Genesimmons82 жыл бұрын
What did you use for the black undercoat? It seems to be a very flat black which is the effect I'm looking for also.
@TheHobbyGrotto2 жыл бұрын
I almost exclusively use Citadel Chaos Black spray for undercoating, but there have been a few times in the past where I've used paint on artist black Gesso when the weather was no good for rattle cans. I can't quite remember 100% but I believe this was one of those times. The gesso definitely has a more matte appearance, almost like a blackboard. Chaos Black spray can actually be quite shiny. Give gesso a try, I've used it on gaming miniatures and it doesn't have any durability issues even though it's paint on. It also doesn't obscure any detail on the mini even though you put it on heavy, because it shrinks as it dries. It's quite amazing stuff! I still prefer spray cans because it's much quicker to undercoat bulk minis, but gesso is great in a lot of situations 😁

@@TheHobbyGrotto Do you do this with all your models?
@TheHobbyGrotto2 жыл бұрын
No, back when I first started making videos I was living in a different apartment and it was difficult to use spray cans there, so it's only really my first couple of videos that have that undercoat, I think probably this very video is the last time to feature it. But you never know when you're going to need to use it, it's a handy tool to have 😊
