What do you use to thin your paints for the fine details? How many layers do you usually work in?

I'm new to oil painting and really frustrated by my inexperience. How do you use black without it smearing all over the other colors? I'm not able to successfully put any color over black. Do i have to wait days for it to dry before I can layer a color on top of it?

His tutorial costs about £35 and you're not allowed to sell your painting once completed, according to his website. Sounds a bit unfair. Never heard of an artist that doesn't allow students to proudly sell their hard work from their tutorials. Quote from his website; Remember my lessons are for you to practice and learn. You are not to sell the painting from my videos.
