Painting a Wild and Stormy Sky in Watercolour | Easy Way to Create an Interesting Wash | Loose Style

Let's paint a stormy landscape in watercolour. I am shaking up my usual painting process here to achieve the dramatic light and strong contrast.

I love how the tree really popped out when you applied that last layer of Payne's Grey around it. I initially hadn't thought it necessary, but I could sure see the difference. Lots of drama in the painting. Thank you.

Thank you Susan! I find that extra contrast brings so much to a scene and really makes it come alive. Painting darker skies like this one is a great example of the power of contrast.

I feel so blessed to have found you and your art. You are a true inspiration and you make me try so many new things. I used to think that watercolour wasn't for me, that I wasn't good enough and had no talent. But with your videos I've found my own way to the watercolour magic. I have a painting date with my teenage niece next week. I believe that she uses watercolor in the same way she does her colored pencils. I can't wait to show her the magic of plopping paint onto wet paper and watching what unfolds.

Thank you! I can't be 100% sure what disconnection you mean as we all perceive painted scenes differently, but it was my intention to create a very high contrast between the sky and the land, to portray that intense light right after the sun comes out after a big storm, making the land glow, and the receding heavy clouds almost black.
