I show my process of painting an impressionistic watercolor portrait of a solitary duck in Central Park, based on a photo I took around a decade ago, on an old point-and-shoot camera. The duck’s solitary contemplation of the reflected textures of skyscrapers, branches, and clouds on the water’s surface, and the muted earthy tones, reminded me a bit of Caspar David Friedrich’s “Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog”, one of my favorite Romantic works. I learned a lot painting this portrait and will probably re-paint it many more times.
