Phil Beckwith The Professional Painter & Decorator

Phil Beckwith The Professional Painter & Decorator

4 ай бұрын

In this video, I have a conversation with my father, Doug Beckwith, reflecting on the early chapters of his life as a painter and decorator. We journey back to his teenage years at fifteen in 1959, when he commenced an apprenticeship in P&D, setting the stage for his distinguished career as a master painter and decorator. Throughout this episode, we delve into nostalgia, discussing the beginnings in painting and decorating and providing glimpses into the landscape of the early 1960s, both in college and at work.

Loved this 👍 your Dad reminds me so much of my old gaffer from 1988 to 93 when i did my apprenticeship. I still keep in touch with him & take him for a beer now again. I still have the utmost respect for the man & what he did for me .

I was only saying on the decorators forum channel the other day that the old boy I learned off would wear a shirt and tie under his bib and brace, have polished boots and always called the customers sir or madam unless instructed otherwise! He didn't swear on the job, he never whistled or had the radio on out of respect for being in someone else's property. He taught me a brilliant lesson in etiquette and I'm pretty sure you don't learn that in college these days! Looking forward to the next one. You should be proud of your old man Phil.

Morning Phil, ive had time to catch up with you today. I had the pleasure of meeting your dad Doug at the P&D show last year. I could have spent hours chatting with him I believe at the show we chatted about the old lime wash days which myself as an apprentice used also. The strict time keeping and having the respect for the clients and their properties you worked in were good standards to have. Well done Doug, Good to see you again if only on film. Took me back in time Phil well done. look forward to more. Like yourself my father was a decorator also and as a kid I’d watch him glaze up a window and he would run the putty up with one hand all around the beadings it looked effortless, before placing in the glass, skills that are not around as much sadly. Regards.

Where I live good tradesmen are hard to find. I hired a so-called painter and decorator. It soon became obvious he was no tradesman, he never rubbed anything down, he just painted over the old paint. We hired him before we moved into the house so we couldn't see what he was doing. We ended up having to scrape off the paint he had put on the doors and skirting boards as the paint he had just peeled off. Unfortunately, that is the way things are going now, we have had joiners, roofers, landscapers etc. Not one was a tradesman and most of the time the jobs had to be done again. What happened to the apprenticeship scheme. The only thing the workers I employed were good at was charging silly prices for their work.

Yup they are an absolute nightmare. The last 8 years or so they have gone down the toilet.

It doesn't have to be like that, did you do your due diligence? Did you ask the tradesman concerned to give a breakdown in writing of the job that he'd be doing? Did you check for qualifications and insurance certificates? Did he have reviews and references? Was he presentable and knowledgeable when quoting for the work? Was he wearing branded uniform? Sign written van? All of these things are a good indication of the person's competence. More often than not he'll be the more expensive side but if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing properly....and once. Always worth getting 2 or 3 quotes aswell to see just what the range of prices is, but don't always go for the cheapest, go for the one that you get a feel for and have confidence in. Good luck.

@@AspireDecorating I hire through a company called My Builder who are supposed to check their credentials, obviously, they don't. I have never been able to find a worker's qualifications and they often get very annoyed if you ask them. When you want a job done quickly you often have to take the risk. The workers don't carry their credentials with them and it can be difficult to see any jobs they may have done..There is also the fact that there aren't many tradesmen to get now. I have had a few decent tradesmen, they were plasterers but the amount they charged was very high. In an ideal world, they all would have qualifications. This is not an ideal world.

Interesting to listen too. My Dad who is 93 (retired at 66) told me many of the same stories. Personally I've done my 41 years, but who in the right mind still wants to be working at 80. Enjoy your retirement or you wont have one, couldn't think of anything worse than working at that age. Surely cant be that desperate for money after being in business all them years. I'm lucky enough to be hanging my brushes up this year at 56. Btw sounds like your Dad has been a bit of a ladies man with all his past girlfriends 🤣
