How I painted Antelope Canyon using oil paints on canvas, starting with blocking in the painting and culminating with the modelling and detailing stage. This video covers painting in layers with oil paint, colour theory, using warm and cool colours to sculpt forms, and lighting your painting.
I absolutely LOVED painting this landscape piece and actually shed a tear or two when it was time for it to leave my studio and head to its forever home.
A note on how I prime, tone, and sand my canvases. I begin with professional grade gesso (I use Liquitex Professionals) and add a bit of water to thin it and some liquid acrylic paint to tone it. My favourite is yellow ochre, though any earth tone will work. Then, using a foam brush, I apply it to my canvas in thin layers, sanding in between each layer with a 220 to 320 grit sandpaper block. Doing this means that the canvas is smooth, and the tone means that I can read my colours more accurately since I am working off of a midtone instead of pure white.
If you'd like a detailed walkthrough of this process, check out my FREE 36 page Introduction to Acrylic Painting eBook, which you can sign up for here: tinyurl.com/42ye4srx

Antelope Canyons are breathtaking 😍 I was blown away when I saw them in person. I loved all the lines, textures and colors that I perceived. Your painting is spot on 🤩 The way the sun glows through the cracks and hits the sand and rock. Beautifully portrayed by you. 😍 Thank you for sharing.

Gorgeous! You did my homeland proud. I grew up in the town close to these canyons. (Page, Arizona) I used to ride my horse to and through Antelope Canyon on the weekends. Lake Powell is only 2 miles away as well. It has gorgeous scenery, definitely worthy of painting, especially the sunsets. Red rocks become glowing at sunset. Thanks for sharing your talent. The narration is interesting and beautiful, such a soothing voice.

What medium do you use with oils?
@MarianneVanderDussen
@MarianneVanderDussen Жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa! I know I responded on Instagram already but I’ll post here too in case others have the same question! The only medium I use is a bit of liquin if I want to speed up my dry time, or linseed if I want more flow but maintain a longer dry time. Otherwise I just use the paint! I like to keep it simple 🥰
