Oh my gosh, how hard this will be for me! I have always wanted to be much more loose with my drawing/painting but find it very difficult. My college art professor use to tell me I would work my medium to death! I really didn't like him for this and as a result have struggled for many years... I will be trying this... and trying again and again until i get it! Thank you for a great tutorial :-)

This was a revelation to me! I paint with watercolours and am constantly trying to lose up so have decided to give soft pastels a try. I read lots of books and watch many videos but no one has described and demonstrated this painterly technique so well! I am very grateful for this video, it was really brilliant. I love your painterly style and prefer that over saying loose because sometimes there are those requests to be a "tightwad". Thank you for breaking your pastels I buy the unsellable ones from a US company. You recently did a portrait and I really took note. I come from a watercolor history in which my preference is impressionistic. Thank you for your tutorials. I have been doing my mileage pastel painting between wc and color pencils. What a great example!

You are so amazing! My mom is a pastel artist and just adores you. She constantly bugs me for new videos of yours. LOL. I'm saving up to send her to one of your workshops (we live in CT!!), but she's afraid to attend because she cannot draw (she traces) and is embarrassed by that. So I wanted to ask, can you attend a workshop without being able to draw? Is that a prerequisite?

I'm afraid you missed the light bounce on the table, just to the right of the apple's lower right edge. You did just a bit of reflection further to the right, but the apple's edge itself is lost in the darkness.

SeasideCorners theres no need to be afraid, just paint your own with the edge and reflections you prefer!

Myrna Rubenstein good question. I often do preselect my palette, but not all the time. This was pretty simple so I just pulled from the box. I need to get some donations so I can buy a palette camera! That would be awesome. Thanks for the feedback.

Question...it appears thar for the most part your strokes are short to medium length horizontal and vertical marks, as opposed to diagonal or squiggles and scribbles, especially on the background. Am I correct in thinking that this would be more pleasing and less confusing to the viewer? ( I realize your pastels lend themselves to this...I'm trying to translate your approach to brushwork in watercolor. gouache, and acrylics)

I have always been more attracted to a painterly style like the Impressionism. When I paint I have a tendency to lean toward a more linear style. I need to loosen up my painting.
