For Stripdagen Haarlem I was asked to design 6 posters for shops in the centre of Haarlem. In this video I show you how I drew and painted one poster using, markers, gouache and pastel pencils.
Stripdagen Haarlem is the biggest comic convention in the Netherlands. It is held every other year.
Throughout the city there are exhibitions, workshops and a convention.
Together with 2 other Dutch comic artists we made 20 display posters. We had to draw them on grey cardboard.
Since 2000 I draw and paint digital. So this was a bit of a challenge. Luckily I still have art supplies to draw and paint on paper.The posters needed to be done in two days. So I had to come up with a plan. I am now working on a graphic novel featuring my character Horus Hippo. The first chapter you can download for free on Books. There is a link in the description. This was a good opportunity to introduce Horus Hippo. I decided to make ads featuring Horus Hippo and Harlow Hippo in a 1920s style. I talked to the shop owners and what product they wanted on the poster.
Poor mans Carbon
I first made the sketches and designs in Procreate. Then I had them printed on paper and used Carbon Paper that is used for tracing patterns for clothing. I creates a white mark on the cardboard. Which you can hardly see in this shot. For tracing this poster I used an old method called poor mans carbon. On the back of the paper I sketched with a greasy pencil. Then with a pen I traced the paper onto the cardboard.
GoaucheThis cardboard is not used for drawing. They use it to make hardcovers. The cardboard sucks up ink and water. To color the big parts I used gouache. I created a puddle with water and gouache to create the best consistency to apply the paint.
FontsFor drawing the fonts I used a golden marker by Edding. I had to apply several layers to get the best result. For the cursive text I used a small brush with gouache.
Italian Ceramics
The ad is about handmade Italian ceramics. I took some pictures of the products and used that as reference for the drawing. It is a pot that is made of grapes. I made a character of it that jumps from a ceramic plate. I used several passes of gouache to paint the base colours.
Inking
For inking I used markers by Edding. This is a time-lapse of the process.
Pastel PencilsTo have more structure in the pot I used pastel pencils. In order to create more grid I first applied a layer of Clear Gesso. Then I applied the paste pencils. I blended the colours with my fingers.
Finally I used a blue marker to draw the letters below and the outlines of the character.
I delivered the final drawing to the shop and it is now on display with the Italian ceramics.
I created 5 more posters for a coffee shop, a chocolate shop, a lamp shade shop, a liquorice shop and a clothing shop featuring Horus Hippo and Harlow Hippo.
