2:40 The armor plate covering the elevation mechanism of a tank's main armament is the mantlet. Looking at the metallic finish, I have to wonder what the result would be from using one of the color shift paints from Vallejo or Green Stuff World, although I suspect that such a finish would be _really_ hard to justify in terms of lore... 17:57 An alternative for regular sponges for chipping application are the green 'scouring pad' products you can find in most supermarkets in the kitchen goods aisle; they have a coarser fine-strand weave, so you can a little more easily get a light amount of chipping; neither this nor a regular sponge will properly create the horizontal (sides) or vertical (front) scratches from the vehicle scraping up against the environment as it moves, though; those will still take a fine paintbrush and a bit of a steady hand. 21:55 Track composition tends to be a crapshoot, depending on how the manufacturer intends them to be used. Some countries -- Russia, WWII Germany, and some of the US Sherman tracks (T66, T80, T54E1, T62) have entirely-metal track links; these give more traction, but have the disadvantage of being rougher on roads. Rubber track pads, with or without chevrons, are used when avoiding street damage is more important -- many US Sherman track types used rubber pads, as does the M1 Abrams, and many modern British tanks. Many WH40K tanks, though, don't have the track face detail that would suggest either metal or rubber links, so you can use whatever type you want -- tyre black pads and worn-bright joints, or solid metal with rust (assuming that the metal they're made of _can_ rust) around the crevices, all overlain with mud and/or dust.

Henry from Cult of Paint did a Blood Angel a while ago where he used more opaque paints over a metallic zenithal undercoat. Looked very cool. Color plates from the Heresy books give me the impression of painted over a metallic base because of the shine. Could be cool to explore as well. It would be less shiny that the tank in this video, but more so than a black and white undercoat.

8:30 I have had the same experience. Most of the time it's about trigger control, not the properties of the airbrush that hold someone back. Because I am working with a .35 needle and nozzle (HP-CS) for the past 5 years, I have had to develop my trigger control to be precise. I recently tried a Mikron (.18mm) and I was a little more precise but not that much. I would have to work with the new tool for quite some time to get the most out of it. Also diminishing returns I suspect.

Amazing tutorial. I was one of those people who thought you didn’t need to gloss varnish before applying transfers, and I can’t stress enough how much easier and better the process is if you do, and I have to thank you for that. One question about the tank commander; can you tell me where does that head come from? It’s absolutely brilliant! Thank you.

Amazing! Do you think this style of “metallic undercoat, contrast paints on top” could work with white scars? I love the effect but wonder if white contrast just doesn’t have the coverage needed without just needing white acrylic over top to make it pop, but cover up the metallic undercoat.

Just in time. I have two Sabres and a Leviathan waiting for some color. Quick question Rob: is the double gloss absolutely nescessary for that shine? If so....I might have to varnish about 60 marines oof. Now, what I would like to see, is how to do to do professional Lightning Claws that arn't just White airbrushed over blue. Kind of missing on KZbin atm.
@medheadfulАй бұрын
I'd recommend glossing at every step! You can use a can or a airbrush. Are you UK based?

Prior to the pin wash, you said you used a matte varnish. I've always heard gloss varnish at this point because the oils will run more easily. Is using matte better in this case? Lovely work by the way.
