Careful, mindful and very complete analysis from a very intelligent painter and thinker - just what's needed so that we can measure the practical hobby value of the spend. Like Vince the vallejo metal colour have been the only metallics I use, bending them with coloured inks and GSW dry pigments to produce a range of metallic colours and shading. These also being finely particulate aluminium means they will become my quick job and my airbrush metallics. Given I've got a necron army to airbrush and a white stormcast based army to metallic accent these become an out of the pot must have set, wouldn't have trusted that if it wasn't Vince or Marco

Glad to see The Army Painter producing quality stuff. I've been rooting for them as the underdog.
@nameisbad Жыл бұрын
Their stuff has been so mediocre compared to other paints, so I don't know why you'd root for them at all. It's like going out of your way in this hobby to find the worst dedicated product and stan for them lol. Really excited if they are truly upping their game tho, the economy has gotten so much tighter and harder so it's probably more that they have to tho. We the customers are the one's who benefit from them finally selling something good instead of ripping people off for 16 years. Not that I blame AP for it, everyone should aim to make money and all that, It's just a damn shame on the stans who push this brand as a good choice to unsuspecting people for whatever sadistic reason they may or may not have. Still, It's so hilarious to see a product marketed at new painters when it will make new painters have a harder time. Truly a product marketed to new painters not because of it's ease of use, but because new painters are mostly the only ones who could be fooled into buying their products, and I can't get behind that. I really really can't get behind giving new painters a harder time. I hope AP and Vallejo up their game. I also hope scale color work on a scalecolor 2.0 that's easier to use for newer painters. Right now ak interactive 3rd gen has set a high bar, where some paint lines have been made redundant almost because of it. (vallejo model color i'm looking at you). Let's hope AP go from the biggest con in hobby gaming to something that benefits us all with better quality and better choices.

I have been doing the same because I like Army Painter as a company and to be honest their paints match the price tag so if you are hard up on cash they are the way to go and are typically more widely available from my experience. So in the end there are many reasons to root for them to the contrary i don't see any reasons for your reply.

They are used by some people because they were one of the first "Tabletop acrylics" companies who stand against citadel and they have the "Starter Boxes" because new people tend to buy a whole range of colors, no matter what you advice. Vallejo was first i think ,but they advertised their colors as normal model colors, not miniature. AP rised together with warhammer ripoffs like kings of war. Before that, there were only 1 master. GW and Citadel. And it was the dark time of citadel paints. Black Caps. Dry Paint. Not opaque nor good. The normal acrylics are awful. The SP 1.0 used you as a betatester and they tried to sell their failed crap as "its not a bug, its a feature". The washes are ok though and they have some little products i like. The fake artis opus drybrushes are ok, better than citadel at least and the Wet palette is very nice. Their basing material is ok and the airbrush colors were quite good. Now they release new acrylics called fanatic, but they dont get any bigger influencer to advert them. Only some niche guys with 100 subs. The thing is, the market changed. There are so many good to excellent paintbrands out there and AP is more expensive than them. AK, Vallejo Game Color, Warcolours.....they are all way better and cost less per ml. And then you have pro acryl, kimera, duncans paints and they are so much better. I will never buy a army painter paint again. I bought the SP1 and after a year and a shtstorm later they released SP2.0 with 200 new colors and normal properties. And there was no trade in for the early adopters they scammed. So i bought xpress colors and contrast range. Sorry not sorry. Buy cheap and you buy twice. The sp red, which has a nice color, ruined 3 of my miniatures. 30 hours of my precious freetime gone, because they released a scam. And for metals i use good ones. Metal colors, AK and Pro acryl. I would NEVER dare to use a "Magic Metal Paint" from the company which produced the "´Christmas Glitter in a bottle" XD

Absolutely wild; I'd have never expected these to be worth anything, let alone stand up alongside VMC. And given that the VMC range is so extremely limited in its non-silver colors, this seems like a great way to expand the available colors out in the golds/bronzes etc. Awesome stuff!

I got a set of scale75 paints for an Xmas gift a long time ago and have been trying to use them including their metallics and to be honest rather deal with the issues with Army Painters War paints than use anything from Scale 75. No matter what i do they come out looking like garbage, thin them down they come our blotchy don't thin them they all come out chalky. Never had an issue with Citadel paints, and less issues with Army Painter than them. The colored metallics I don't mind just don't have much use for them.

Great video Vince. I've been using these AP Metallic Speedpaints with the VMC range for a little while and they might be a bit of a game changer. The darker AP SP Metallics can be used as a shade over the lighter AP SP Metallics without dulling the overall Metallic values (Nuln and Agrax type shades always kill Metallic shine). Then glazed highlights of VMC Gold or Chrome can give almost chromatic effect TMM.

This video got me doing a little research on actual gold colors. Turns out the yellowness of the gold seems to depend on how many carats it is. The more carats, the warmer the color, so 14 carat gold is a pale yellow, like your gold mix, but 22 carat gold is very yellow like a lot of the "gold" miniature paints. Most gold jewelry is not pure gold, it is an alloy, or mixture, of metals including gold, but also copper, zinc, and other metals. Carat is a measurement of the percentage of gold in the alloy. 9ct = 37.5% gold, 14ct = 58.5%, 18ct = 75%, 22ct = 91.6%. Gold leaf, which is often used to cover things like decorative armor, statues, architectural elements, picture frames, etc, is pure gold, which is why gold used in these items can look very yellow, and not as muted as 14ct gold, which I believe is what your gold mix is based on. There are also many other gold colors created by using different combinations and quantities of metal alloys, like rose gold, black gold, white gold, etc.

Vince I've been thinking for a while that the old masters glazed up from a Burnt Sienna underpainting for a reason - yellows aren't going to turn green! Portraiture doesn't work as well when the foundations are a black to white grisaille. The nice thing about brown is really any colour is going to look good over it. Blues have enough coverage that they won't shift too much and for everything else you just get a nice deep shadow colour. I'm going to pick up some brown primer ASAP.

The main reason why gold paints are so yellow is because the color of 18ct gold is by far the most famous tone of gold. That's followed closely by even more yellow 22ct tone. The average person would also struggle with telling if a ring is made of brass or gold if you put a 14ct gold ring next to a brass ring. They'll assume the brass ring is gold because it's the yellow one.

I am enjoying these new speed paints as well and I like the copper, brass and bronze as well. I have found some success in mixing in some inks and wash or citadel contrast paint. I found that a bit of of red with the copper has a really nice effect and some sepia with the bronze color changes how they look for my own visual preference. Your preference may be different but it was a lot easier to mix in color to these speed paints than the Vallejo Metal. For me working with the Vallejo metal has always been a bit harder. Not sure if its the altitude or something I am doing wrong but I am able to airbrush or brush paint the speed paints on pretty smooth but for the vallejo metal color paints I have only found a smooth success on the airbrush. I still keep trying to figure out what I am doing wrong but with a brush (synthetic cheap amazon bags) I always get clumping when trying to highlight or shade. I did not think to go over white and should have read the instructions though. Thanks for that as I will be trying zenithal and white with these new paints. I look forward to you future tips with these paints or just in general.

13:30 from my testing (and seeing how the Vallejo Metal Color Silver and Duraluminium separate in the see through bottles I decanted them into) Silver and Duraluminium are virtually (if not completely) identical (same color aluminium flakes and same blue/grey color). I picked up the bronze, steel and golden armour colors the other day, and so far I REALLY like them since they have that transparent look to them. They also spread so nicely, and thin down fine with contrast/speedpaint mediums. They also work really nicely as a dry brush contrast color over other metallics. They actually do remind me a lot of the Tamiya paints with how nicely they spread, but unlike the tamiya's they don't reactivate and gum up when you glaze over or shade with them. I'd actually love to see you work with some of the tamiya metallics and see what you think. The tamiya paints in a jar REALLY shine when they're used with an airbrush, but brushing them on is a bit of a nightmare. Not sure if it's the alcohol based medium in the tamiyas? I only use them with my scale aircraft/tanks, but It's another of those things that makes me think the scale aircraft and warhammer circles haven't shared enough with one another. There's a lot of useful techniques and tools we have in the warhammer hobby, that a ton of scale aircraft people are just totally unaware of. Specifically where it comes to painting. They love their enamels, and that's how I learned to paint and it was so much harder than it needed to be with enamels. After learning acrylics with shades and glazes, I see almost no point to use enamels anymore. They're just too dangerous to be worth the payoff, and I feel like with Acrylics, even rattle can acrylics, I get WAY more control over how thick my layers go on and where my light is being directed. I don't miss painting in my cold ass garage. I very much enjoy being able to airbrush in the same room I have my drums and guitars and not worry about the paint getting on them and ruining them and no more wearing a respirator for hours just to thin down cheapo model master paints. I'd love to know what you think about this! I know this is a rambly comment, I'm just curious what we can pull from other hobbies to make ours more fun and more diverse. Also, how do you feel about the Army Painter pre mixed Flow improver/thinner bottles? Do you think it achieves the same result as making your own mix? It's the only thing I have experience with since it's been so hard to find just flow improver at my game shop.

Fantastic video, I was an early adopter for their metallic paints and they're always in arms reach. Oddly enough, for tabletop gaming I've found they are a bit more durable than traditional metallics as well, maybe due to something in their suspension resin? edit: one thing I did find and I mentioned this to Uncle Atom is if you get optimistic and put them on thick like a traditional speedpaint, the pigment settles and you get a plastic glossy surface that almost sits above the paint. I made this mistake when I first started but realized quickly that if you apply them thin like traditional paints the results are amazing (as your video shows)

I've absolutely fallen in love with these things. I've also found that mixing Horde Bronze 3:2 with polished silver makes for an amazing light brass color. Since I got these Grey Knights Steel is pretty much the only other metallic I still use outside of edge highlights.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and insights, very much appreciated. If it's not a too big bother for your, please try to use a microphone mounted on you throughout the shoot so you'll get a) constant quality and b) an easier time editing because there are no jumps in volume. Talking about volume - you're output is way too low which leads to the YT ads blasting out my ears in the middle of the night. Try to work with the output meters, maximize your volume to the dB allowed by YT and possibly even think about using a compressor.

Very interesting - I've been a VMC purist for awhile now, and I don't think this will replace them (on account of I already own them!) but it's great to see more good options in the retail space. And if I have a project with a lot of bronze, I'll have to consider picking up a bottle.

Nice comparison! I like when the guys at the Army Painter do something different. I was one of the fans of the reactivation of the first SpeedPaint line.

Me too I think they are missing an opportunity to keep selling the 1.0 medium

It would probably ultimately hurt sales to have two so similar products in the market. In like "oh is it this or is it that, ahh what ever I buy the Vallejo colour...". @@CaptinCrofty
