Best feeling in the world is standing before a finished painting and going "holy crap, I did that..." nothing brings that high.

true, but the opposite it true too , "Holly crap,... it's crap"!! LOL

Astarion!!! Been putting in the work on oil paintings, but it is exhausting especially with a life sucking healthcare job. Thanks for the motivation!

What a pleasure to see Astarion being portrayed while listening to your valuable insight on painting. Thank you.

Love the message, love the art. ♥ Creating fanworks has been a way to practice in a way that I'm really enjoying throughout the decades of making art. I'm just dipping my toes into painting now, but excited to play around with techniques.

Long time watcher of yours but oh man I clicked soooo fast when I saw Astarion! 😂❤

As I am one of your students, I can say that your suggestion to 'wreak it' AFTER I finish a painting was some of the most effective and 'fun' advice so far. 😃

Man I love when one of my favorite artists paints Brennan Lee Mulligan or Our Flag Means Death or Astarion, proving that we like exactly the same things outside of art 😂

When I began oil painting, I was in grad school for a science degree, which eventually lead to my full-time profession. My original reason for painting, at a relatively late date, was not so much as fun but a diversion from hard science course work, and as a challenge, and also an extension of my interest in art and drawing since childhood. I was the kid always taking art as an "elective", and also later had a short time working as a draftsman, before I myself got drafted into the Army, LOL. I always enjoyed the feeling of pencil in paper, as you all know that it is addicting in ways. Anyway, after military service I want back to school and finished preparing for my new career, getting a B.S. and M.S. in Biology; but always kept my interest in art going, up to now, in retirement, many years later. I have tried all the media and many genres, wildlife to start with, now landscapes mainly, and I have done all the typical "artsy stuff" like gallery representations, art clubs, various competitions, and pein air events, yes, I do like the competitions as you said, being better than all the rest of the participants, but also respecting those better than me. Now I do art as way to zone out of a complicated world and as way to do stuff "analog" not digital (but my brush hand has digits, right? LOL), even though stuff like this online post is that. I suppose a professional artist sees art as job, but it is a good job, as mine was as profession wildlife field biologist for three decades. If you love your work, it will be fun, and you will never have to "work", no matter what it is. That's an oversimplification, of course, because anything you do that requires skills will be work. Art for me is mostly "fun" when it is going well on the painting, otherwise if it is not turning out, then not so much fun. Guess I'm not alone in that, for anything you may want to do, professionally or otherwise!! Cheers, and thanks again, Chelsea, for a great vid and your insights.

Nice painting of Astarion. I always would draw and paint video game characters as a kid. I think I lost that when I started atelier training.

A challenge I do is only mixing together 2 colors at a time from my pallet. (Not including white). It really helps to slow me down and keeps colors more vibrant.

Would you make a video on color specifically? That would be awesome I would love to know how you choose colors based on what you are working on, and whether you embellish or go rogue with color choices. Not so much from working from the color wheel, as there are tons of videos like that on youtube. It wold be cool to dee what color combos work and why they work. Coming from your perspective would be interesting and insightful, I am certain

Take the pressure off by painting something ordinary or mundane like the contents of a closet or a book; turn the picture of whatever u are painting upside down and paint it upside down; paint to the rhythm of whatever music you are listening to - the more variety the better; give yourself a fixed window of time, e g "I'm going to give myself 1 hour to finish this painting..." and just see what happens.

I always end up holding my brushes close to the ferrule... can you discuss the proper ways to hold a brush and why?
@ronschlorff70899 ай бұрын
no right or wrong way to hold it, and the part you are working on in painting, and the type of brush you have in your hand, will often dictate what to do, as long as it is "comfortable" to do it.
