Your palette is interesting. I believe Rembrandt used around 4-5 colors only to do his masterpieces. You basically did the same thing as the old masters have done. Mind you the limitation could be an issue of money.... I'm not sure how cheap or expensive or how wealthy past artists were...

Great job and really well done! I would avoid Patreon like the plague. Better to just send people the address you want the money to go to and problem done. No need to rely on censorship machines to do things for you because the more you use them the less chance you have of using one the next time you use it. Its a law of the market.

14:40 (learning) - This was my major flaw for myself as an artist. I only ever cared for the outcome, even at this moment, the naive part of me is still saying "your painting is not as good as the one you're copying from" but you've hit the nail of the head. It's a learning process, building better foundations a deeper understanding of the fundamentals. Took me a long time to appreciate the state of mind one needs to engage in learning for the sake of learning.
@denisceballos9745

Agree - it’s a good way to learn, improve one’s skills, by copying the masters, as a practice. I copy my favorite artists and always make a note (give credit) to the artist at the bottom.

I’d like to know more about how you use mediums like liquin and turpentine. I was never really taught like a method or technique to use. should I mix on the pallet? Should I just add some straight away to all my paint?
@chubbyjaydraws
@chubbyjaydraws 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen a lot of artists mix on the pallet as they go.
@artmentor-chrishendrix1724
@artmentor-chrishendrix1724 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely only ever mix on the palette. A few reasons: 1. Flexibility: As your oil paint progresses you will likely change your medium mixture. Maybe you’re just doing a super lean wash and you only need turps, but then you’re going to layer a mostly fat layer on top. 2. Drying time: a lot of people use some form of dryer in their medium, to cut down on the insane drying times of oil. If you have very thin mixtures of paint and medium with a dryer in it, it’s going to dry on your palette before you have time to use it. 3. Saving paint: same as above but if you’re the person who tries to put your palette in the freezer or in a vacuum box to save your paints for the next day, they’ll definitely be unusable

Just use as little as possible, the paint is made for use as it is
@UnbeltedSundew
@UnbeltedSundew 4 жыл бұрын
Only use as needed, which is basically to thin out the paint for lower layers and for glazes. I'd use an odorless mineral spirit instead of turpentine, the spirits are bad enough. Liqiun will cause the paint to dry much quicker, and also has pretty noxious fumes. With the liqiun a common practice is to put a little pile of it on the pallett like you would the paints and then just mix it in the same way as you would a paint. As James A said, you can avoid all that and just use them straight out of the tube until you get a better idea of what you want to do to the paints and what qualities you want to change.

Sargent did not use a limited palette. Also, a very common trait of the Zorn palette is a yellow hue to the face/skin tones. I really dig ur videos & u should b proud of this master copy, it looks great! Thank u for the content & commitment to art & painting, I really enjoy ur channel. ✌🏻Stay healthy!
@angieschaffer8233

Nice attempt. But remember this:: the Zorn palette is way too limited for JSS style paintings. He was a bit of a madman with his palette and heavily loading his brushes with thick paint that he exhaustively mixed. He had cad yellow, cad red,, cad orange, Alizarin crimson, viridian, cobalt blue, burnt sienna, raw umber, yellow ochre, ivory black, etc on his palette at any given time. He was hyper focused on getting the shape of the sitter’s skull correct and lingering in middle tones, gradually going from to darks to lights. Details of the face were completely ignored until the end. You’ll note that In his backgrounds he tended to go lighter on the shadow side of the figures and darker on the light side to bring the face forward.

This is a great beginner tutorial. It’s important to note that, although this has likeness to the original, the technique And overall outcome are far from the original. Sargent, like many of the great masters, would build his painting up in layers of coloured glazes. These glazes give his work the depth and form that can’t be achieved with anywhere near the same quality with this wet on wet, surface level technique. After seeing some of Sargent’s work first hand, his glaze most likely used a damar based varnish. It would have had one of the popular painting oils and turpentine. Still a great video. Just wanted give people some extras.

Normally would being that arrogant and so contenious of young people now would address you as Young man, but instead I feel you deserve a 'Sir', having retired at the age of 65, three years ago, grumpy, extremely critical and took up oil painting could not believe the number of 'so called Art tutors' on here who dare to call them artists. I also was a teacher trainer and can truly say you are a true artist, you can teach, have character, intellect, humour and talent and I 'hate' you LOL. Have been watching Richard Robinson (New Zealand) 'My Paintclub' (very good artist and tutor) and he very much promotes John Sargent and is why I came across your KZbin, I will certainly subscribe and I am sure I will learn a lot from you.

nice accomplishment, seems the special skill of the masters was to slightly transform a face into an aristocratic appearance, like a member of the royal family. Not that they copied a face one-to-one. Advanced light engineering.
