I am licensed counselor. One of the reasons I was drawn to watercolor is the lack of control, the happy accidents that can happen as pigment and water mix on paper as well as the muddiness and other unhappy accidents that frequently occur, so much like life. :)

Hi John. I’m also a MH licensed counselor and love watercolor for the same reasons. I also utilize watercolor in sessions.

I used to paint my feelings through shapes, colours and brush strokes at art therapy. Sometimes I painted even my nightmares. At the end of each art therapy session, usually you show it to the group and tell your reasons to paint the painting and what was going on inside of you in the moment of painting and how you are feeling now. Other patients got to say what they are seeing and what the painting does to them when looking at it. I really enjoyed art therapy and more often than not I managed to understand myself even more.

I too wonder if what I do in art is right and good enough. At 67 now, I am way better at letting go of what society thinks of me, my art, my mom skills, my partner skills, etc. I strive to be kind and honest (but encouraging, not mean in my honesty). I plan my paintings and prefer realistic painting and colored pencil. Finally last week I did a fun, no care mixed media piece and I am happy with me and it that creation. As women in our society, I find most females are overly concerned about what others think of them. As I age, I wear the colorful clothes I enjoy, leave the house without makeup 🤓and am attempting to relax with my art too. We are all on this journey to realize how marvelous each of us are as individuals.❤️

I also don't have a good vocabulary for my emotions. Painting is a way to express things that I have no words for.

Hi Emily. I am an interior designer by trade. I have done many very ugly faux finishes on walls due to a bad day that needed to be fixed another day. It is therapeutic for sure but something I've learned over the years is i never paint when I'm angry or sad. I wait until it passes because i make mud! Yard work has been the answer for me!!🤣😉 Get behind a shovel 😁

Thank you for uplifting me. We all have "Stuff" we're dealing with. Or trying too but sometimes people expect you to be strong cause that's how they know/see you. So you bottle up the real feelings you're having. I have never painted my feelings but whatever it is bubbling under the surface it's feeling like my pressure is going to blow😮 Praying 🙏 for you Em and your struggles.❤

Thank you Emily, for this video, and for sharing yourself with us. I’ve never tried to paint my feelings, but this encourages me. In yours, I see that even though you are angry, maybe a bit sad, there’s a light in you that won’t be put out! Bless you!

I totally get how uncomfortable this practice is. I'm always trying to avoid my uncomfortable feelings by escaping into films, videos, books, music and art that creates happy places! Painting difficult sensations is very... well... uncomfortable! I think you did a fine job with this art session despite your discomfort.

Very helpful for you to talk about the control that you have that is innate. I too am not in touch with my feelings and painting them is impossible! So your honesty has helped push me to try this technique. Thanks

Thank you for this. Lately I’ve been having this feeling that I want to paint something really big, though I have no idea what it would be. I’ve even bought a few large brushes, for what I’m not sure. I’ve never done a painting without some kind of plan, even if it was a “spontaneous painting.,” and I’ve never painted my feelings. After watching and listening to you, I really think I need to let the paint fly and just see what it becomes. I think it might be about letting go of limiting beliefs…

I absolutely LOVED watching you through this process of exploring your feelings, especially as a fellow person who struggles to process/understand my own root emotions (and also a perfectionist). And although it is much different from your other art, I think this turned out stunning! Thanks for being so vulnerable in sharing this. Definitely gonna try this idea soon!

I'm with you on abstract art being tough, not to mention abstract art which speaks to people, like Jackson Pollack. I like what Bob Ross used to do at the start of some of his paintings, where the sky or the background would be all weird and blobby. That can be a form of contained expressionism where we figurative and landscape types can capture our feelings, a bit at least I'm guessing your "weird brushes" are like the misfits of your toolkit, the last picked, and Bob's go-to evergreen tree brush, the fan brush, is your not-picked kid after the teams were chosen. Between ideas, I used to draw whole pages of abstract no-lift, non-touching interwoven wavey lines, kind of like abstract hair, which I would eventually end up shading, which felt sort of expressive at the time.

There were a few parts of this video that made me laugh out loud which is EXACTLY what I needed today. I try to sit down and paint whatever comes to my mind and I cant' do it. I need a plan. So I can soo relate. But also...I need that spikey brush yo used! I think it is the second one you chose. You started painting with it and said it reminded you of a forest. Please tell us where to get this. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this abd your struggles. I can be this way too and bottle things up inside but ive learned through 50 plus years in this planet that its not healthy so i now talk to trusted people and have even started a diary/journal where i let go of any thoughts by jotting them down and switching the negatives to positive s. Another thing i got into was neurographica art tyerapy. You must try it. Its very cathartic
