Napoleonics is one of those areas I have yet to take the plunge into - I love all the uniforms, the cannons and seeing the spectacular massed ranks people have painted up, but I can't help but find it all a bit intimidating. I'm used to painting single or small groups of miniatures for games like Warcry, so Napoleonics is a bit of a leap from that! That said, you make it look so easy, in spite of all the tiny little details (even the concept of piping boggles my mind), you might've just inspired me!

Delighted to hear I might be inspiring someone to dip their toes in. Piping is one of these fiddly details that needs practice and isn't vital. With a group of say, 24, the massed ranks is the impressive part rather than all the individual finishes. It sometimes takes me longer to do a handful of sci-fi skirmish game minis than it will a battalion of Napoleonics! Grab some French in greatcoats and start there!

Interesting that you use a wash as you are using contrast paints?
@CullodenPaintingStudio

Yeah, there's a couple of reasons for that. Obviously, the other acrylics need washed, but the dip is also acting as a varnish, plus by wiping it off the raised surfaces it creates a zenithal highlight that you don't get with Contrast paints alone. I am finding the effect quite nice, and pretty simple to create.

Why are you using a brush like that? It’s way too big for details.

With a steady enough hand and a good point on a high quality sable brush, details can be painted with surprisingly large brushes. Bigger brushes have the advantage of more paint in the belly, so there's less chance of drying out before the details are painted. Fewer strokes speeds up the process and leaves a smoother finish too.
