Hot Nerds™ please join me as I paint this giant hero-scale pirate ship from Reaper Miniatures' Bones 5 kickstarter! This little DIY project took me weeks but I am so pleased with how this ship turned out after waiting for it for YEARS. Can't wait to use this in my Dungeons & Dragons campaign: While Iiriual Sleeps!

Fun video, dude. I am, however, a little confused that you thought of using a spray varnish but not to use spray primers and paints. I think this would have improved your experience dramatically. You could even have used some colored primers to skip a few weeks ahead on your project :V just some thoughts for your future massive pirate ships to go with your current one.

haha well to be honest i did think about it, briefly, and my concern was that i would get it everywhere! on top of that, i also greatly, greatly, GREATLY underestimated the value of having a decent primer coat... major lesson learned. on my next of what can surely only be imagined as a fleet of giant miniature ships i will definitely be using spray on primers. or perhaps i'll just fill my bath tub with paint and give it a dip! anything to speed it up! thanks for watchin' through my weeks and weeks of follies !!

@@zaqstoner Great job my man. looks like a lot of fun to play on. My girlfriend and I are beginning to dip our toes into the world of terrain building, using lots of hirst arts molds. As far as my take on gun powder and magic. Unless everyone can shoot fire out of their hands, and you have people in plate armor that are really hard to hit, gun powder still makes lots of sense. In my game, hand held gun powder weapons ignore ten points of physical armor class at short range. Have fun with your wooden ships and iron men motif. Best and cheers,

I can't tell if there's a good place to drill and install some strong neodymium magnets, but that might be the best solution for the stacking problem. Might also be worth using some construction adhesive and steel bars or rods on the undersides to stabilize some of the warp. Edit: I can see it's already been suggested xD my b.

I have 13 of the Playmobil pirate ships, I undercoat them with a black spray paint, followed by a light dusting of white spray paint and then I brush the ship with a brown paint. The white over black gives the brown a more wood texture effect, I then brush on a coat of Mahogany Delta Liquid wood stain. I wargame with these ships and my 54mm pirate figures outdoors on a 20ft x 20ft blue tarp. I'm currently scratch building buildings and a port with docks for this pirate project.

I got the loot studios pirate ship from ships ahoy bundle. As well as the viking ships (all three) from the Valhalla bundles. From these models used as foundation, I 3d print my own modifications to give all new looks (I now have 18 variations of the viking ships). I went with loot studios because I love the looks the pieces actually fit. One of the coolest features of the pirate ships (from any studio) is the playable layers. It sux that the model you received does not fit correctly, I suggest reporting the issue to reaper and send pics. Hopefully they will replace it. I would have suggested washing the model with alcohol water mix (1/3 mixture alcohol to water). Considering the damage of the ship on delivery (not fitting together) I think yours turned out well. You painted it nicely and worked with the parts they gave you. Good job. In regards to the cannons, just because mages, wizards, etc can shoot fire from their hands does not mean cannons would not or should not exist. 1) cannons are used for long range combated primarily (spell casts have limited range). 2) there are none magical classes of characters and NPCs that cannot cast magic this cannons are an equalizer.

@@zaqstoner I use Apple Barrel matte paints for woods, walls, stones, etc. 1. You cannot beat the price 16oz on Amazon is 5 bucks, the colors come out fantastic and unlike glossy or metallic paints, they don't stick. You can also use multiple waxes (I use to use turtle wax but now I've switched to all matte paints there is no need) to wax over the layers that connect and this eliminates the stickiness/adhesion. Just give it a good buff around all surfaces that would connect.

First painting video I found. Did you have issues with alignment on the lower two pieces?
@zaqstoner
@zaqstoner 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if the issue is alignment as much as it’s the warping of the plastic - the nose where the bottom and middle pieces touch just won’t stay together as hard as I try because the plastic seems to bend away from itself. That’s really the only places that’s overwhelmingly noticeable though - all the other imperfections are sorta hidden by the final paint job

Wouldn't of filling a bathtub of hot water work as well with the larger ship pieces? Also; why didn't you use a spray primer? I've done this to the Blood and Plunder ships I do and have had little to no issue with that. Wizards need mana and they get tired. Cannons never rest. As long as there is gun powered, ammo and a crew that knows what they are doing, and a full broadside and hours of training versus years of training, cannons rock.

Gunpowder was born from alchemy ina world where alchemy actually works something reliably explosive will inevitably be stumbled upon. Plus not everyone can use magic and bows take a lot of practice so like in real life it's cheaper to get armies of expendable guys with guns. Plus then you get magic guns. Also this ship wouldn't be designed the way it is with out other weapons wouldn't fit below deck as well.
@zaqstoner
@zaqstoner 2 жыл бұрын
hmm this is an excellent point... i suppose yes, gunpowder may be created! i'm not sure if magic would cause the gunpowder timeline to develop faster than it did in our own world, tho... and in a world where even the most novice of magic users can shoot fire i wonder what kind of design innovations would have to occur to keep the gunpowder on a ship from becoming an easily exploitable weak spot!
@TheGlassPhantom
@TheGlassPhantom 2 жыл бұрын
@@zaqstoner Well, interesting historical note: One of the reasons gunpowder weapons started overtaking bows in the middle ages was because they required much less skill on the part of the wielder to use. Proper longbows needed someone with a lot of strength and a great deal of practised experience to be of real use in warfare. Guns, despite not having reusable ammunition and being more expensive to build and maintain could be used by almost anyone. By comparison, if this is something like a D&D setting, then yes, its relatively easy to pick up magic, but like an archer, being a spellcaster who's worth anything would be on par with getting a masters degree in a science field - that is to say, a great deal of practice and hard work. Further more, spellcasters only have so much arcane energy they can draw on at a given time (usually represented in game by spell slots or something). A wizard needs to recover their spent energies, where as a cannon, as long as it has shot and powder, can just keep firing. Not to say they'd supplant spell casters all together, but I think they'd definitely have their place even in a world with magic. Lastly, ignitable gunpowder was just always an issue on ships back in the day. A lot of shipping lines had policies like leaving so much as candle unattended was an offence big enough to strip you of your wages for the journey. In battle you were always one lunatic with a Molotov cocktail away from disaster so to say. All that said, things like big ships were astronomically expensive to produce so it was generally a better idea to capture an enemy ship rather than blow it up. Which is also something cannons are better at. Well, at least better at disabling a ship than fireballs. It's much easier to repair cannonball holes than trying to salvage a burned out exploded wreck. Lol
@captin3149
@captin3149 Жыл бұрын
@@TheGlassPhantom I think of it as an equalizer too...not everyone can shoot fire from their hands, but if I was going up against one that could, I wouldn't want to charge him with a sharp stick if I could come up with a way to level the playing field. I use a cheap heat gun I got from Harbor Freight, takes care of warpage well. Army Painter spray primer is ideal, takes care of priming and base coat in one fell swoop. Primer actually adheres to even vinyl (the type of plastic Reaper Bones and Terrain Crate use) so your paint won't come off as easily. Also, let your clear coat cure fully (about 24-48 hrs) and it shouldn't stick to itself. I use a polyurethane gloss (gloss is way more resistant) followed by a artist's matte varnish, 2 coats each. Just be sure to let the gloss cure FULLY before the dull coat or it will leave an "alligator skin" appearance from the matte curing before the gloss. You did a good job on the paint job, I'd be proud of that!
