In this tutorial, I go over how I paint a realistic rock terrain on the base of my next big model paint. I printed this awesome X-Men Beast from Sanix link below. Once it was printed, I noticed that the base has so much detail I wanted to bring it out with some mixed effects. I go over a few different techniques in this video that give a great effect in combination.

Nice job! Good to see a different perspective than normal miniature painting. For realism I can recommend extending the browns to the main rock as well. Maybe adding some yellowish tones or blueish grey as a wash, before highlighting with grey. Helpful thing for me was taking an actual rock for reference or picking some colors from a pickture with the pipette tool.

I printed "Medieval Castle" (by boldmachines, Thingverse), and there's quite a bit of terrain in the foreground, mostly rocks, a path, and some trees. I had no idea how to paint terrain, and Chris saves the day again. I'd used gray primer but gave the terrain part (minus trees) a black base coat. then did lighter gray highlights and some brown in and along the path. Came out good! So thanks Chris! :) Here's an idea, you should have a weekly or monthly (or whenever you like) "criticize my painting" video. Users send you pics of the model they painted and you offer you opinion/critique, what is good what to improve, etc. Just throwing this out there!

That’s awesome I’m glad I could help! On your idea that is amazing. I don’t know how I would collect paintings but that would probably be super helpful to be able to give people ideas on how to get better. I’ll have to do some thinking on that. It’s like back in art school having class critiques. Thanks for such a great idea!! That would be a fun livestream I could even invite the people that submitted the projects.

I wanted to request a tutorial. If possible, could you teach us how to paint tiny D&D mini character faces? I can't seem to get the details at such a tiny scale and eyes...omg so hard. Skin tones, yikes. Just general feel lost on humanoid faces especially when the entire head is the size of the tip of my finger.

Oh man. I hate to tell you but I’m right there with you. I have a hard time doing it too. I play D&D and I hate painting minis. It is a completely different skill painting small stuff.
