That was a great tip on how not to be overwhelmed by the amount of details you have to paint... Im one that would be overwhelmed if i had to paint something as highly detailed as your painting in this picture... Great job can't wait to see it finished

I like being able to compare what you are doing with the painting, to the reference photo/print. Cutting out the piece and sticking it right next to where you are working made that much clearer. It also helped me to see how you had blocked in that area, compared to the photo. I'm having a bit of trouble visualising those base colour blobs when the foreground trees are so dominant in my eyes - e.g. how far down the gray rocks reach before the treegreen starts, and that the midgreen tree blob in the underpainting stops at the pale green line of the grass, well higher than where the treetrunks emerge from the ground. My eyes are still too inclined to see the tree-as-a-whole shape and try to assign that an underpainting colour. By now I've learned to let the blue sky run on a bit at the edges so it can peek through, but I'm having more trouble with this in the foreground/mid-depth, and this was helpful for that too.

I agree with the small portioning idea- I actually work off computer screen image- usually much better resolution than a picture- AND I can ZOOOM in REALLLY close to things like the eyes or a piece of jewelry or whatever so I can really see what's going on. Rubbish reference picture = rubbish art picture. Or at least much MUCH harder to "make up" the difference of a bad reference. Thank you, as always for the new vid!

Great minds think alike. My photo-realistic paintings are more on the order of a combining together of 24 to 100 smaller subsectioned portions, but I just use a reference photo under glass, paint flat using a bridge and take my time, without need of computers.

Patience and passion. I appreciate your work. However a question just popped in my mind. If a painting looks like a picture and not a painting ( I understand the hard work you put in it and very much appreciate it ) then does it get the appreciation and value, it deserves on just looking at it by a viewer and not knowing its a painting?

If any of Michael's paintings are given to any lay person without telling that it is a painting, they will say that it is a photograph. Only an experienced art critique will recognize that it is a creation of an artist. That does not devalue the painting. It is an indicator of artist's ability and inexperience of the viewer. On the other hand the one who recognizes that it is a painting will understand the value , difficulties and the skills involved. That person will appreciate it in its true value. Everything lies on the beholders eye and experience in tasting art. Therefore an artist should not worry about how others will interpret his or her work.
