Another litte tip you can use is fineline tape if you want to keep your black outline. you follow the lines and this tape lays out so smooth and easy. then lay in your other tapes on top and your paper. Also for your clear you can use your 1st 2 coats with 2k clear and hit your final with epoxy. sanding in between that way you dont spend so much on epoxy. Love the art. glad I found your chanel

A little tip, leave your black work till the end. Tape up along the edge of your outer colour, go mad with the spray paint, then outline everything. You’re then free to customise the outer line, making it easier to ignore any dodgy masking errors.

Hey Kat! Love your work. I saw you on the Modustrial channel and came over to see some of your stuff (Iive in Seattle, and loved your Octopus Graffitti wall art in the Studio!). Small tip for the epoxy pour that I learned from making skim boards for my nephew (similar process, just bigger piece of wood!). before you pour the epoxy, put blue painters tape around the bottom part of your edge your epoxying, so in your case, the "rough" topside is now upside down and would have a "skirt" of tape protecting it. The trip is to leave the tape "hanging" from the board so, kinda looks like a skirt around the edge of the board to redirect the drips down/away from the board. Then when your epoxy dries, take an exacto knife and run it around the "top" of the skirt along the edge of the tape. What you end up with is a super clean line without having to worry about drips. I picked that up from a local maker who makes surf boards here in the PNW. Less work/stress and better end result. Pro Tip He often would use 2 layers of tape so his knife had a nice "lip" to run along to get a super clean line. Not much surfing in Chi-town, but if you look up "Glassing" surfboards, there's some great tutorials on KZbin that show what I say better than I can say it. Stay awesome!

Relevant, as I was up at 5:30 am, to apply some epoxy coats on 4 decks, I have done heat application graphics on, already. I'm pushing 4 coats of some flexible epoxy. Was good to see your technique, as this my first rodeo, with epoxies. I dig the heat , technique, and fully understand it, where others won't. Very Clutch. Glad I clicked this vid, before going to finish this run, of decks. Especially , because I have some big name Client, I just finished 2 of 4, graphics in digital. They are expecting 1. See what I did??? Super important things, are going on, here...good vid, great art. Thank you!!!

@KatLiepinsArt there are some really good ones out there. Iwata is one of the best. I use the Aztek one. I like it because the tips screw on an off, there are no long needles. Super lightweight. Nice job! This has probably been said dozens of times but coming from a surfing background where I've repaired and made multiple boards using epoxy: you can get a far higher quality finish/ shine if you wet sand and buff out the last pour. Check out some surf build videos if you want. After the last pour, sand with a very fine grit and then move of wet sanding and buffing. You will get a sheen like nothing else... just saying.
@KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! Thank you! Great comment. You clearly have lots of experience using epoxy. I'm using Makerpoxy by Totalboat and it is geared toward crafters and artists so with just a pour you get a super clear glasslike finish (no sanding required). It might not have the same characteristics for strength like other epoxies that do benefit from dry/wet sanding and polish (I only assume this because I wouldn't ride one of these skate decks because I'm pretty sure the epoxy would delaminate if the board flexed too much, but my work is only meant to be hung as an art piece). I do really want to make a surfboard from scratch someday so this info from you is super useful! 😀

Hey Kat, do you have any suggestions for an alternative to a propane torch? Would maybe a long candle lighter work?
@KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt Жыл бұрын
Hi Jen! Some people like to use heat guns to pop the bubbles in their epoxy. The only reason I don’t is because they blow air (kind of like a high powered hair dryer) and can cause your epoxy to move or ripple if you aren’t careful. I have friends that like to do a fine mist of denatured alcohol but I’ve never tried it myself. I’ve also never tried a long lighter but maybe it would work. Let me know how it goes if you give it a try!! Best of luck! 😁🍀

friend, i have a question, what would happen if you spray paint first (i think is the light blue) and draw on top instead drawing on the white bottom and cover it to spray the borders?
@KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Victor! Good question. I use translucent neon paints, meaning that they’re sort of see through, so if I sprayed the entire color background first, I’d have to project and prime a white area that I could paint on afterward. Then, I’d probably have to project again so that I’d have marks to work from on the white primed part. I’m always open to other methods, but I thought the way I did it would be the least amount of steps. 😊 I hope that rambling answer made sense!

Looks really awesome...fantastic job! Question...it must cost you a fortune to make one deck? What did pay in materials to make this one? Epoxy is not cheap. Does the epoxy coating make the board heavier? Thanks
@KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt Жыл бұрын
Hi! And, thanks!!! I’m so glad you like this! I am creating my custom decks with the mindset that they will be sold as valuable and lasting art pieces so using quality materials in my process is by design. If I had to ballpark, this deck had a number of pours on it (maybe 3) so the cost of the Makerpoxy was somewhere around $60. It’s not crazy expensive compared to other materials I could be using…I’m not using crystals or gold leaf in my projects, YET! Mwahahaha! The board is a little heavier with the epoxy but marginally. The board is meant to be hung on a wall as art and not ridden as a functioning skateboard anymore (you could, but it would make me cry) so the weight difference doesn’t really matter. Great questions! I hope that answered everything for you! Have a fantastic day!!! 😊

@@KatLiepinsArt Hi Kat, thanks for the quick and detailed response! I appreciate it. I figured what you were doing is like a fine art painting meant to be hung on a wall for display...very cool. I make boards and graphics too. I am working on two of them right now (today as a matter of fact). I have a different process that I will share. I don't expect for you to take on my method because you have your own process that seems to benefit you. I started making decks about 4 years ago. I sent my shape to a manufacturer and had them make fifty for me. They had bottom stained veneers in hot pink and yellow. I needed to figure out the easiest way to press the same graphic onto 50 boards and get it done quickly! So I figured out how to silk screen. I made custom stretched silk screen frames that mimicked the contours of a skateboard. I burned my art design into the screen (the way that you do it with the right emulsion chemical, the acetate transfer image, and I made a light box to burn the image in). That was the hard part, but it worked perfectly. Then I was able to silk screen 50 boards in about an 8 hour day. I finished up with a spray gun/compressor and sprayed my epoxy coating on (not thick, just enough to give it a high gloss). They look amazing. Today, I still make boards but not at this level. For instance I am only doing two right now which are the same, but I am not going to silk screen these (just not worth the time and money). But I found out through doing, that you can hand paint with silk screen inks and if you do it right it will lay on so flat and smooth just like a real silk screen. The trick is to add just a little bit of water to your inks. You do your varnish first, then hand paint with the ink last. In the end you have something that is ready to sell and looks as good as anything else out there. You don't see any brush strokes, everything levels out. I might send you mine when I finish up and take some photos. Cheers, and keep up your great work!

When you're doing the design in Procreate, do you have your color palette already picked out or do you build the color palette as you do the design?
@KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex! It’s a little of both. I like to use Pinterest to find color palettes (I like the ones that breakout the individual color value numbers because you can enter them directly into procreate) and then modify them as I work in the program. Sometimes a piece needs a little adjustment to some of the colors or more/less colors to make the piece successful. There is definitely a healthy amount of playing around that goes on behind the scenes. Hope that helps!!!

I recommend waiting a few days, even a week for your acrylic paint to dry all of the way through before pouring your epoxy. It also sounds like your surface under the paint isn’t gripping properly. Do you sand and prime your surface before applying the acrylic paint?

Hi Vincent! You bring up an interesting point. I’ve always struggled with the decision whether or not to include my signature on my pieces because I feel that it distracts from the design itself. I do hand sign original boards on the back or will sign the front if requested by the patron. Now you’re making me rethink this again. 😅 Aside from branding purposes, why do you think it’s important to include my signature out of curiosity?

@@KatLiepinsArt Greetings Kat, Ok, I have read where some artists think that signing their artwork detracts from the art itself. Here are a few of the reasons that an artist should sign their artwork. Recognition in the art community. Artistic tradition and to claim the artwork is yours. Advertisement and to increase the arts value. One other thing I think you should do to your originals, would be to date the original and for copies of your work, like skateboards or prints would be to add a serial number to each piece. I know that would definitely increase the value of your artwork. Thank you for asking for my input. Please take care and stay healthy. @KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Victor! Good question! I wanted a nice thick protective coating that is super smooth and level. A traditional varnish would have taken a lot more work (brushing and spraying) and would not easily cover the texture that my paint job (though subtle) leaves. Epoxy resin gives that gloss and shine that almost looks like a layer of thick glass, and almost as if it’s come from an automotive shop. I absolutely love that aesthetic! I hope that helps!!!

I usually spray the whole deck first, sketch the design onto the deck, which I find super satisfying then like you said Wacky paintings, fill in with white for proper pop’age, saves with all the masking ..if there are any happy accidents outside the design that’s also satisfying somehow making them a part of the design 🙂 it works for me as I can get a bit impatient when I have a project.🙄

What was the reasoning behind painting the actual edges? You want to see your layers of veneer to see if you have 7 , what kind of wood or if it has carbon fiber layers and last of all you want to see if its delaminating as that could mean death to your deck.
@KatLiepinsArt
@KatLiepinsArt Жыл бұрын
Hii! This is very interesting! No one has brought this up to me before. I assume this is a really important thing if you're going to actually be riding the deck. Since my decks are meant to be hung and displayed as art pieces (not skated on) do you still feel this is something that folks will feel strongly about? I'd love to hear your thoughts. :)

@@KatLiepinsArt really depends on if the person that may be hanging it is a skater or poser . Sorry not being rude towards your work, its obvious your not a skater and your coming from the artist prospective but if your doing decks , skater look like thats your market your aiming for , well with the 2 decks you have done . Its just a blank canvas for you . Now stranded deck have 7 layers of maple,anything from pro decks to even the cheapy blanks from china and if it dosent its trash that dosent even deserve space on my wall . Some can come with that but the pressing may be a bit ehhhh on the cheap Chinese ones and they may use a diffent glueing process and you can see some times the layers that have not pressed together properly. Some decks even have diffent colour stains on each veneer so you get a kind of layering of diffent colours . Thats kind of special and shows that more time went in to making the deck. To pain over that is doing the deck a injustice. Now, diffent makers and pressings may have a mix of maple and ash or maple and bamboo so you will see the diffent shades of wood and the higher priced decks may have up to 3 layers of carbon fiber like the Powell fight decks and if i had i fight deck even just hanging on my wall , im going to want to see those layers. I paid for those layers. That nice round beveled edges on all decks are done by hand too, each deck gets done one at a time , alot of work gose in to them and they even alternated the grain of the ply and you can see that in the diffent shades of the layers but that is done for strength primarily. Ive only ever seen like kids $30 walmart compleats and that toy end of the scale that have their edges painted and not hand beveled and sanded . It just screams " not a skater" or " my first deck". But who said that the buyer is going to hang your decks , if you got something halfway descent, it may get used. I customize my decks all the time , i know its going to be rubbed and scuffed off doing slappys and rails and when that graphic is buggered , i whipe it over with some prepsol and slap some new art on it and keep doing this untill my deck is dead. Currently i have a zero deck but my prsonal graphics on it is a flaming 8 ball . Its on its 3rd lot of graphics but i never cover the edges of my deck because i want to see if my deck is failing and i give it a light re sanding when i put new grip on . You should check out some content of people that have their own board company as some are small back yard business and even the mass produced ones have alot of hands on work done to them . Want a link or 3 ?
@jaded9087
@jaded9087 Жыл бұрын
Oh and a long board would not cop the punisment on the graphics of a street, transition park, vert or free stye setup. I have no idea what you sell your decks for but i can pay up to $700+ to buy my dream set up with all the hardware, trucks, the bushings , bearings, risers , deck , rails, wheels and grip verry easily if i was to go nuts with the credit card. But id be asking even more questions like what number pressing it is, the withed of the deck, what angles and length are the nose and tail and whats the wheel / trucks setup holes are , what fatory is making the blanks. A deck is very personal taste and you can get a deck that you usually love and the company has swaped where their getting them made and hate the new factory version of the deck you once loved . A cool graphic is a bonus, you dont just get a deck for its graphics unless you collect pro decks and hope they become an iconic deck , it could be worth a lot more than you paid for it if they stop pressing it or change the grapic to the right buyer. So if you have a pressing of roman numerals on the deck . 1 to 5 . Thats the pressing order. Thats important to know, you want to see that too. Just the wheels and bearings on my now deck cost over $200 and i have not gone nuts , not the cheapest either though. Lets just say i have good ones , some pros would be riding the same wheels and bearing combo im useing atm . , So if you where doing art on a quality deck , us OGs are old enough to splash cash on our toy and know it may be dead in 3 weeks . Im 50 and still skating .
