Some of the most important takeaways from this video, for me, was that you are not afraid of making mistakes, but rather you keep on going until you get it right. And another is, not perfect, but good enough. Thanks for those invaluable insights, as I typically overwhelm myself with thoughts of being unable to attain a sufficient level of perfection in a project; especially with creative endeavors, and then get stalled in my progress, and then quit, or even worse, never starting.

finding you is a breath of fresh air. i started out as a model railroader, but left for armor modeling because to me the social aspect is just as important as the actual hobby. and i couldn't stand how "model railroading" devolved into spending money and bragging about it without actual modeling. the people local to me were just to... toxic so glad to see actual modelers still into trains, you might encourage me into actually pulling out my train stuff again
@boomerdiorama3 ай бұрын
The primary definition of model railroading is the same as when I was into military modeling as well. Model Railroading means to model a piece of a railroad whether fictitious or real. Everything else is an associated aberration of the former. The social part is secondary. I can get social time anywhere I choose on my terms. Furthermore, if you are an introvert personality, you don't need socializing to stay interested in the hobby - and then of course, there is social media, which is on your terms anyway . . . ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

I love the tarp, they are everywhere here in Florida. My region was hit dead on by hurricane Ian a couple years ago and there are still blue tarps on people's roofs! And you can't model a water front scene without having blue tarps around. They are as common as boats.

It actually makes perfect sense in terms of color theory. The bright orange is clearly what the eye will see with direct sunlight, whereas the other shades directly approximate light and shadow variances. Thank you for another brilliant video, Boomer! Cheers!

Boomer, great tutorial on colour theory. Thank you for letting me let go of my OCD on getting the absolute correct colour, and just build it up. Great tip on the tarps, I have seen people use old tea bag cloth, but the tissue paper and water looks good, that will have to be my next self taught lesson. Thank you for sharing, cheers, and stay safe, Michael

Seeing the model in your minds eye. I understand perfectly what you are talking about. It's the practice and discipline to move it from the imagination to reality that many don't grasp. I have always learned more discovering what doesn't work than getting it right the first time. As you have said many, many times "fail forward."
@boomerdiorama4 ай бұрын
Advancement in painting skill is a unique discovery for each individual. You can't really teach it. You have to encourage people to just do it. Knowledge does not mean acquired skill. Practice cultivates skill. We learn by doing, not watching. ;-)

Woah, the finished product is awesome and so many great painting tips like paint the shadow! And LOVE that tarp! I just got off a forum with a whole bunch of modellers trying to achieve this look with material BUT tissue paper stuff? Who would of thought! What a monster tip and yours looks great! ALSO, I finally bought a bottle of Liquitex matte medium after you keep convincing us to get some haha! My first use was for making a bunch of your ever green trees with the wire loops. Man that stuff is strong. Best trees on my layout too by far btw! Do you know the difference between matte medium and matte fluid medium? I am guessing the latter is diluted? Anyways, thanks for sharing your skills! God bless!
@boomerdiorama4 ай бұрын
The difference is probably "viscosity." I find that Liquitex is incredibly strong when heavily thinned and diluted with water as well. I probably waste more than I actually use . . . lol. If you use matte medium, too thick, it can leave a grey film. The way to kill the gray film (if you get it) is to soak it with Isopropyl Alcohol. The IPA seems to dull it down and evaporate. Cheers!!

Boomer, I followed a Video on one of these "Rail Carriers" it was an eye opener to see just how many chains, blocks, chock's were in use to tie the rail cars down. ( Which is what you would expect). But how many more they had that had'nt been used just lying between the rails. You would'nt want Father Christmas's bod, you would'nt be able walk between the track's. Under the deck there must be tanks full of water. To keep the deck even as the rail cars cars came on board water would gush out of large pipes into the scuppers Different subject. Evergreen Plastic's do a 20thou chequered plate sheet in different chequered spacings. 1 sheet would be enough to produce man hole covers etc for a life time. My sheet is so old unfortunatly I can't give you a code number. Cheers, Chris Perry

Wow this video has only been around for 2 days? I feel like I’ve been putting it off for a while already just because it didn’t immediately interest me, but talking about the orange is intriguing. The red pigment in every day items really tends to fade pretty fast, and I feel like you can see that in the pictures or printouts you’re showing. I got to thinking maybe pink mixed with orange? And then you said you got one of those with adding a lot of white to it. Funny to mention, I ended up trying to mix my own Conrail blue for my switcher. Luckily I ended up weathering and fading a bit to match it better. It’s also really interesting thinking of spraying something thin over another color in a layer. I’ve been through some basic color design classes in college that went along with my photography. It was fun, but definitely didn’t cover putting a transparent paint over an opaque. Oh! I was also wondering if it would be worth it to paint something more faded on top compared to something that would be in the shade more often. Though, if they’re under a tarp, it might not fade as much.

LOL so I guess there's no point asking what colour you start with for your SRY locomotives 😂. Another great video, thx
@boomerdiorama3 ай бұрын
Good question. It depends on several factors. I have loads of photos of different"faded" blue shades on SRY locomotives. Some are dark blue, some are lighter, and some almost two tone shades with grey roof instead of black. You need to study multiple photos and decide the shade of blue you can live with on your particular locomotive. The latest (2022) SRY - SD35 is Tamiya Blue X-4 (85%) with Tamiya Sky Blue X-14 (15%) per volume. The earlier paint color (Pre 2010) was a bit darker, so Tamiya Blue X-4 (90%) with Tamiya XF-50 Field Blue (10%). This should get you there depending on how you see it.
