Your dad was very in tune with what you needed after losing your mom. What a blessing to have a dad so willing to dare venture outside his own grief and perceive your young heart’s longings. It is in giving that we receive. Moving.

This moved me to tears. I have an inner voice that tells me I cannot do things things or it’s not good enough especially in my textile art. Understanding that you go through the same is profoundly inspirational knowing that you work through that inner monologue and coming out the other side. Your art is amazing… thank you for making this moving film of how you work and what influences you. I have also written the Delacroix quote down to remember - I feel this was destiny for me to see this today to move forward in a more positive and freeing way with my art - Joanne UK

I find textile art is wonderfully forgiving and goes its own way with me following, choosing colors, movement and layers as distance and time bring inspiration. It needs to breathe by itself and speak to me in its own time, then we work together, developing forms and allowing additional elements to blend in as needed or required.

After experiencing the ups and downs in life, at age of 46, I started drawing and painting. I won some prizes at local art juried competitions and had my solo exhibition. Then a long hiatus followed. Recently I began to draw again, but am scared of taking up brushes to paint again. Watching your video let me understand that to create art, you need to coerce yourself into the creative mental state, and seemingly mundane things such as setting up your palette is important in bringing you closer to that meditative state. Your personal experience in doing art give me encouragement to get back to art. God bless you and your family.

Thank you for your message. Yes, premixing the palette, making all kinds of colors can wake up the creative spirit. And if a certain color speaks to you, then find something to paint where that color is present. It makes me happy that my documentary inspired you. act upon it before the inspiration fades away.

Very inspirational. Many people in our lives don't understand the creative process. I'm currently learning watercolor, & my landlady is asking daily, "what didja paint today? Let me see!" then she judges it, etc. I don't want to have to explain it, I just need her to let me be! They have an expectation that if you're a 'good artist', you should be able to whip out a masterpiece daily!

It might be time to keep your work private from her. It can be hard to protect your creative process. I think it’s very important…, even if others don’t understand. Good luck!

Being judged can really hinder your development, especially when you're learning something new. You need time to settle into how you work and gain both skills and confidence. It sounds like this lady's just taking an interest, but you might not be confident enough in your work to defend your choices yet. I'd tell her at the moment you're just trying new things rather than working on something you want to show people (which is sort of true!). Hope everything goes well for you.

I agree with the other statements. I have never had solid boundaries which lead to people invading my privacy and serenity. Being creative is a solitary endeavor, my opinion, and brings great joy. Do not let anyone spoil it for you. I wish you well.

Thank you all for your supportive comments. I just stopped painting for awhile, & I know I shouldn't - when I begin again, I just won't tell her. But one problem is, I live in a studio/one room apt. So when you walk in, you see everything I'm doing, no way to hide it. I guess I'll just have to explain it to her after all! I'll have to find just the right words, as she's the type of person who's socially inept, & does not know how to read a room.

Such a beautiful and powerful movie. The ability to see the beauty in all things pulls at ones inner silence to listen and really see the invisable. To become the seer intimately observing nature in all her forms one sees Truth. Then the dance begins everywhere in everything. Watching how each blade of grass sways and vibrates. How the red and orange poppies in the field dance and sway. The tree and her leaves whisper other vibrations. A drop of water. The wind sings and the symphony begins. We can hear all the resonances and vibrations and the world become alive and precious in this moment and we are forever moved. We become one with our environment and the heart opens and a knowingness awakens our deepest core. We connect and become love when we simply tune in and watch and listen to what is before us.. These moments synchronize thru our senses and we are moved to create. We may have no idea or maybe have never painted before, but now Nature has given us infinite ways to feel. She shows us her tool box of textures, forms, lines, densities infinite color and movement and sound. She reveals a Truth in the nature of all things and we want to somehow emulate and express our awe for what we have been shown. The invisable world is alive with light and darkness begging us to see and hear her. This is when in time we come to know the grace in all things. Art then becomes an open door in which to express our higher selves. Your movie eloquently showed us the art of disipline and at the same time letting ourselves be free enough to let whatever comes out thru our hands and fingers to simply be. That is a beautiful lesson. As is repetition and refinment. Art is a wonderful way to self actualize and transcend the world within us and around us. Giving back the gift we create. Your movie exemplified these truths exquisitely. Thank you so much. Your movie gently wakes us up when we forget and doubt ourselves to the beauty and heart within us. And becoming inspired we go back and try again to see what will be revealed and we express our truth and gratitude. Thank you for the movie again. I stumbled upon this movie when I needed it most at this time in life. Ahh the magick of synchronicity!

Wow, what a masterpiece of a words. We are speaking the same language. Painting the wind is the eternal guide to the notion of painting the invisible and losing myself and going beyond. The enveloping all-encompassing wind draws me into the dance of nature and ignites my inner soul to express the invisible through visible brush strokes, making a new poetry on the canvas. I love Emily Dickinson's verse: It might be easier To fail -- with land in sight -- Than gain -- My Blue Peninsula -- To perish -- of Delight -- - Emily Dickinson Thank you for your amazing feedback. As a Christian and an artist myself, I really enjoyed sharing your life story. I met my husband in Zambia where we were both serving in a mission hospital...I have struggled to find a balance between art and my faith, as I have become so obsessed with art from time to time I and realized it has become an idol in my life. I often leave it alone for a year or so and find when I go back I have improved and grown...because an artist never stops studying and looking at shapes and colours. I loved how your husband was so right for you, and I can't help thinking this is why we need a mother and a father in our lives to grow as well-balanced as possible. Thank you for sharing and so masterfully done.

@@jillsteenhuis4337 Thank you for your reply. Yes, it can be inseparable, but during hard times I have often used it as my bubble rather than hiding under His wings. This is when we become self-reliant rather than God-reliant. There is a place for art and a place for God I find it had to co-mingle them without an imbalance. I guess we are all different and at different stages of our journey. I envy your guilt-free freedom to create. Others do try to encourage me but I just can't stop feeling my joy should come from Him and not by my own hand. The question is can a God-given gift be used by the enemy to cause us to sin. I believe it can, if we internally give it more head space and time than we give God. This is when we have created an idol. Does this make sense? I suppose it's just one of those individual struggles that God allows to help us grow. Many blessings to you and your family.

God is Creation. God is the Artist of Artists. God is in the brush. If you give the hand that holds the brush to God then (you and art and God are one) and there is no conflict. Your joy will not in 'your own hand'. Your joy will be in 'His hand' and you will love God more because of the art He creates through you. Imagine yourself as the parent of a three year old girl who tells you she cannot paint because she is afraid you will be angry with her. As that parent, how would you feel towards her? Would you be pleased with her for being a good girl and doing something she doesn't enjoy instead or would your heart break for her broken heart? The enemy is in prevention and destruction of creation. Guilt = religion. God = perfect Love. There is no fear in love. The enemy delights in driving the guilt that stops the flow of the gift that your Creator has put within you for HIS pleasure. It doesn't matter if you or others judge your art as good or bad. Do it for God who delights in seeing his children play at being creators just like their Daddy God. Paint FOR God Delight in it FOR HIM as He delights in you. GOD BLESS YOUR ART.

Bravo to your son for capturing all of what makes you, your story, your art and your amazing love story so refreshing. Two favorites. 1. Drawing is the foundation of painting. Drawing deals with the light and dark and painting deals with the warm and cool. 2. Letting go takes an element of faith and faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. That’s what art is all about. So beautiful.

We are all on our own unique journey. Each one is valid and remarkable. Destiny speaks to us in many ways, often through art and nature and through our sufferings. With the loss of each of my parents to suicide, my loss has been great. My father's bankruptcy, nothing left, nothing. Poverty is the door to freedom. Poverty is the rich soil to finding one's way and enter into a compassion that one would otherwise not have. VG wrote that he had found his calling, that he wanted to paint paintings that give comfort and hope to those who suffer like music does. His letters and paintings as well as other great masters have given me comfort and hope that has lifted me out of my suffering. I am coming to Virginia for shows in Richmond & Virginia Beach on Oct / early November. Hope to meet you.

I was quite surprised to see this on my recommended playlist, but sufficiently intrigued. Wow! This is most probably the best video that I have ever seen on KZbin. And certainly couldn't have come at a more important time in my watercolor journey. Painting the darks and the lights, the warm and the cool and the seen and the invisible. The first two, I had down pat... but it was your taking me by the hand into your world of creativity. The precious silence, the courage to go back to the source of your strength, the mountain and most importantly the courage to make mistakes in your art. The symbolism of the beautiful yet shortlived cherry blossom truly touched my heart. I have only just recently found out that my wonderful painting life will very soon, most probably within this coming year, come to it's end. Too soon to paint all of the beauty I hold in my vivid memories and my heart. I choose to believe I will leave as the cherry blossom, a flight of many paths floating gently to the ground. Thank you for sharing this vision with me. Ultimately, your magnificent film culminates in the telling of your courageous love story. How perfect. Such a beautiful tribute this superb film production, done so superbly by your son, has been and was such an immense joy to watch. Many, many thanks! 👩‍🦳🖌️🙏

I spent years after his mistake, searching, or maybe getting even, only to remember I always loved him the most. We've both forgiven our mistakes and thank God for allowing us to make them and keep us together in spite of it all. the history we share is so good and yet so tragic too and has led us to know what true love really is. We each can hardly bear the thought of one of us leaving this world first. I thank God for the only man who ever understood me and loved me in spite of it.

We are all on our own unique journey. Each one is valid and remarkable. Destiny speaks to us in many ways, often through art and nature and through our sufferings. All is possible and nothing is possible. The choices are before us. May we share our spirits and go away on a higher plane by receiving the uniqueness of the other. Cheers.

What a beautiful documentary of a beautiful approach to art and life. Thank you for revealing some of the magic in your way of life, and allowing us to share in it, as well as in the story of your destiny. Jill, you voice is serene, deep, wise like the mountains you carry within. I’m inspired by your devotion to your subject, your commitment to see the invisible in your subject and let it be known through art. It’s so important that your voice, story and art be known, and send its quieting waves of beauty into the hectic side of life. I feel inspired and encouraged to follow my own spiritual-artistic path, which I think has kinship to yours. Blessings!

I had just said something to my husband yesterday similar to this about painting the invisible but I said painting the impossible. Your words especially near the end have articulated so well, what I have been trying to phrase in my heart. It was by faith that I had created these pieces in charcoal that I was amazed surprised and amazed at. That fear you spoke of in making a mistake so rang true. I have concluded it is that not putting charcoal to canvas because of fear is a worse mistake than applying the charcoal incorrectly. And that beauty can be found in that mistake as you said something similar. Thank you Jill Steenhuis and the filmaker James Ruffato!

What a wonderful piece of Art this is and thank you God for finding it's way to me. I've been an artist most of my life, yet have had to work on them sometimes through the night while working a full time job, and trying to take care of my wife and be there for her and family. While I'm very thankful I'm still trying to figure life out and how I'm going to get the art out there at age 57? Yet it still fills my heart with such joy as Jill says here. Let's don't ever give up on what we are given to do, I know some may think I have or did when I had to stop teaching but that was definitely not the case. Art is a gift we must share, no matter how anyone else may receive it!! It's part of the artist soul and must be felt. Thank you again for producing this and living the life, especially being and decided to make art. Forever artist, for the glory of our God✝️🖌️🎨🖼️👏🙏😁 Artist Christopher Paul Simpson

In nature I find the God-created Ikons, the windows through which the invisible substance of being is glimpsed. Examining the beauty that first presents itself and attracts me, I can look beyond and see the quiet, spectacular eternal Love and beauty that placed that flower, that reed, that brook, that mountain, that tree. Wow you are amazing. I have been buying paints and setting up my loft for a studio for the last few monthe months and you have inspired me to want to go out and paint. You need to wrote a book. I would so challenge you to do this. Your words are so insightful. Your thoughts are slow and so carefully put to others. They are welcoming and encouraging. Your painting is so wuick and rushed so different that your story telling. I wish I had more formal training but I just may have to dip into the paint and get going. I have never painted or drew with the fears and fast energy that you do but I do get a feeling of connection from my subject matter, like you speak of. I love tye press that you have. It is an old soul. I paint landscapes, pet and people portraits. Mostly people that have passed. Especially when I paint the eyes I feel that the person is in the room with me. I will be sharing this and look forward to more of your videos.i think we ate similar in age. I hope I can get quite a few painting done soon. I would like to fully retire to paint.
