The runners up were so gracious. I have been the winner of categories in competitions in my time and not everyone who doesn’t take home the prize is as gracious. This made me very emotional. Each artist was gloriously talented and I loved every moment of this, but Hetty was exceptional and this win was so well deserved.

I've given up on trying to figure out Kathleen. It's not like using a photo is anything rare in this series. Quite a number of artists do it and some who have done so have won. Yet she complained about it this time. She's inconsistent. Whatever. The artist created an amazing portrait and the sitter was happy with it too. That's what's important.

Very true. I watch these shows for the great art - no matter how they get there. I don't really believe in "judging" art, far too subjective.

Yes a photo always remains in place, does not require a break, change of position. Photos have been used by artists, since photos became available. I use photos for landscapes as well. Light and shawdow remain constant in a photo.

I am an artist as well and i think the winner is the one that I am truly expecting! She did a great job of putting a swoosh texture on the face and the dripping red paint. The likeness was a masterclass as well. GREAT WORK!!! TRULY DESERVING❤❤
@marshallross3373 Жыл бұрын
Firstly, it's great to see a show celebrating artistry of any kind. I wasn't aware of any "live" portrait competition; what a great idea. The winner worked off a cell phone snapshot, which was an interesting choice. She nailed the likeness, obviously, and imbued the image with painterly energy. I thought it was the outstanding rendition. In portraiture, there is a tension between accuracy, and giving a painting or drawing something extra and unique. Someone mentioned Picasso, and I'm reminded how photography offered a way to essentially supplant portrait painting with a rapid alternative, so portrait painters became less documentarians in the 20th century, and more visual explorers. Now AI is entering the domain with computer generated art, which can create a near perfect likeness with painterly flair. Fortunately for artists, having a one-of-a-kind, tangible object, like a hand painted portrait, has added value due to its uniqueness as a real object, a fact that digital art simply cannot not get around. And, people are impressed with a good, free-hand drawing or painting. There's a guy gaining an online presence with his clips of himself drawing NYC subway riders, and presenting them with the finished sketch. He's quite talented, and built up a pretty massive following. So, ya, the market for art is alive and well.

Kathleen sometimes i think just say stuff just to have something to say. I've been watching this series for a bit, and it's not the first time someone used their phones. She wasn't even the only one in this episode who was using her phone, and yet she said the girl was "copying" the picture. That was a ridiculous thing to say.
@IceCenders6 ай бұрын
I feel the craziest thing is that she wasn't even using a grid, so the only thing that can be criticized is that she's not drawing from life, but then that's what the majority of contestants have done throughout all series. It's as if she mostly had issue with the fact that that the contestant was using a very small screen that forced her to be hunched over, as opposed to other contestants using tablets hung to the side of their canvases, which should make it more conspicuous but at the same time perhaps makes it look like they are painting/drawing from life, except they mostly aren't. What's also weird is that year after year they come back to that place where the light tends to shine differently half-way through. It's as if they're actively encouraging the artists to rely on pictures because they can't rely at all on the lighting of the scene in real life.
@katalinelo80115 ай бұрын
@@IceCenders They changed the venue after this season I believe to a place where they have only artificial light which stays consistent. But they still allow them to use whatever they want. Phones, tablets, printers, you name it. I remember there was someone in a more recent season who does larger than life hyperrealism, and she printed and traced the photo to get it absolutely accurate. They didn't have an issue with it as hyperrealism takes so much time and requires so much precision. They are never consistent with what they say, it really depends on how much they like the artist's work.
@Honey_Badger_xxАй бұрын
@@katalinelo8011I haven't seen the hyperrealism one yet, but I saw an episode where one of the artists used tracing paper on her tablet screen, then put the tracing paper on the canvas and traced the face, and yet Kathleen didn't say a word about it. I don't understand why she singled Hetty out in this episode when we see the artists all doing it every episode, it was a typical Kathleen word salad moment to say something mean and picky.

Opinons on art are subjective. Why do art competitions exist? Why would someone ever want to be rated by some narrow minded critics? Their opinions don't matter anymore than anybody else. And frankly, why care about what anybody else thinks? There will be *somebody* who is drawn to anybody art.
@LauraBCReyna Жыл бұрын
Art competitions exist as a form of PROMOTION. They promote the sponsoring organization, art as a medium-- in order to expose new generations & keep it going. And they promote the artists themselves. Because this is a televised competition it's done a lot of good for the careers of the participating artist.

I wonder if the artists who manage to be chosen for more than one opportunity to participate are asked to come back by the judges who like them but couldn’t necessarily give them a win initially, or, do they have to re-submit for each leg of the competition.
