Painting The Scratch Built Barge Ramp Head | Boomer Diorama ~ # 262

I finally finished painting the Barge Ramp Head. The head is subject to lots of wear and tear so I weathered it to look the part.

That's how I weather my locos and freight cars too! Get it super saturated, blob the paint on in different earthly tones, then let the fluids play and blend on their own. I then finish it off with dry brushing to bring back out the textures, which is all the most important in N scale. It's tiny enough, so I wanna try my best to get those given details to pop!

I can’t wait to see Princess Carrier comeback to life. You’ve inspired me to add a rail barge scene to my layout. So much neat modelling to be done in terms of building and colouring. Just a simple tug barge operation moving tank cars to Vancouver Island like the prototype.

Dear Boomer, living in Amsterdam Noord to travel to my work I cross the IJ river almost daily by the ferry from the NDSM slip to the Pontsteiger slip. Next to this one there are several other ferry services, mainly for pedestrians and bicyclists who need to commute to either side of the water. Of course, because of these ferries’ purpose they are fitted with a rather simple coupling system to the ferry landings. Still, it’s kind of similar construction wise to the Annacis Island slip and ferry you’re modeling. The ferry’s off ramp which is hydraulically lowered is fitted with a hook which lands on a wide rectangular steel bar to keep the ferry in place at the slip, for unloading and loading passengers. A set of dolphins aligns the ferry towards the slip and at the ‘head’ of the slip there are those similar blocks (although much smaller) which restrict any lateral movement whilst the ferry is at the slip. This entire story to tell about the accuracy of your modeling of the slip’s head. There’s a similar maintenance interval present over here. The weathered paint you’ve been applying looks so similar to what I daily see. The funny thing is, that I’ve been looking more closely to the details of the slips and ferries I encounter ever since you started building the barge slip. It’s not that I’ve never done so, but the main thing I personally take away from watching your vids is to even pay more attention to the daily details I’m observing, which in turn is such a great resource for any modeling project, or for art for that matter. I often need that when I try to paint and I feel I get stuck for whatever reason. The saying I'll sleep on it is exactly that, and oftn one needs time to process things and think things true. I guess we are far to stressed out in today's society to think things through in general. Cheers!

Water, Happy Accidents, Let Dry, Repeat. I did this on some 1/35 stowage boxes over about three days, just stabbing in a little color each day and walking away. Then I came back one day and looked at them and was like yup they are done.

That's exactly the way it works. After awhile it becomes so easy you wonder why it isn't more complicated. The water manipulation does all the work. ;-)

I will be dropping a video about the Ferry this Sunday. I won't talk about the Tug right now because I am focused on the Ferry and the Ferry was in the initial plan way before the Tug was. I just wanted to start the Tug at the time because I thought it would be a quick build and I thus would not forget it. It will get done eventually when it's time comes. @@boomerdiorama What you've already posted on the Tug was enough to get me through building the hull of a 1/87 WW2 icebreaker, the USCGC Algonquin, as well as the main deckhouse and pilothouse and started on the capstan and some of the deck fittings. Especially the stern section; think what the Tug's stern looks like, but upside down. :D Now it's just down to building various fittings and bits of equipment, and I understand how some things require both time and inspiration to get those final bits done. Been at it off and on since August, and it's been fun. Thanks!
