Painting the valances on my TRD 4Runner BLACK for less than $30!!!

With a little time you can remove your valances and paint them black with professional results for less than $30. Can save you hundreds of dollars over purchasing black TRD Pro bumpers.

I did this 2 years ago using a Milwaukee sander before wet sanding. it held up really good and love the finish on it. Not super glossy like OEM and not matte cheap looking like plastidip

Looks like it turned out great, for all the time spent and thr possibility of chips, I'm considering getting aftermarket black valences so if the chip, they are still black, around $125 each. Might replace the front since it doesn't require removing the bumper, for the rear i was considering dip as it doesn't get as much road damage as the front

I know it's not super hard to remove the front bumper but the front valance can be removed without removing the entire bumper. Found a video on here that walked me through it..came in handy bc I also needed to drive my vehicle in the meantime. Great stuff, though. Thanks for the pointers!

Just add a light bar behind the grille and give yourself an excuse to remove the bumper

I watched several videos removing it with bumper on. Having painted the valences on my 4runner I can confirm its wayyyyy easier with bumper off. And I'm comfortable working on cars doing things like that.

I have the same rig as you… and had the same wheels on my last 4th gen 4Runner. I’m assuming they’re 17in…What size tires are you running and what is the wheel offset? 0? Thanks! I had great luck with the level 8s, super durable and never had to be balanced over the 7 years and 50,000 miles I had them. May go that route again.

I am planning on having my front and back valances Line-Xed and I have a set of DD SSE fog lights I have yet to install. Would you recommend I do those at the same time since the bumper will be off? Do you have an install video of those Baja fogs? Love the channel, hope to see more 4runner material.

I don't have a video installing the BD fogs as I did it before I even had this KZbin but I can tell you I did them with the bumper on. I simply pulled the inner fender liner back some and installed that way. With that being said, it will be wickedly easier to do it with the bumper off. If you can I'd suggest installing when you have the bumper off since you'll be removing it anyways.

hey Jake love your white TRD, i have a 2017 TRD Pro. Thanks for showing me how to paint the valances....quick question is that how you did the actual one above the back license plate as well? The one with the actual 4Runner lettering. I like that look, but I have the overlays on the letters now. Let me know- love your look tho!

If you have a Pro everything should already be black so no need to paint. Once you put overlays on the letters it should look identical to what I've done to mine.

Looks good and nice the grill well. Did you spray the grill previously? I just got my grill and it just looks like black plastic, no paint. Was thinking of painting it and the valances, and maybe throwing some satin clear on them too.

It has been over a year but also nearly 30k miles since painting and I just noticed some chipping on the front this weekend when washing. Basically one spot that until I washed I thought was a bug. Considering the miles I've driven and debris I've hit I'm not mad. There are more chips in my windshield unfortunately than in my bumper.

Just tried this paint today and I have to say I’m very disappointed with the quality of finish. This paint dries blotchy and the slightest graze chips the paint right off. I HIGHLY recommend that no one else use this paint. We switched over to Rust Oleum professional paint. This paint is half the price and sprays way more evenly and is a much more durable paint. Thank you for your video, I appreciate the help and this comment is only intended to help other consumers purchase the right type of paint for the job

Aside from a small rock chip or two it has held up very well. Not sure anyone would notice the chips but myself. Not sure how it would compare to wrap. I knew I could paint them myself but wasn't sure if I could wrap them. If I had to do it again tomorrow I'd probably paint again.

Know this is old but hopefully can get a reply. So with this paint (just ordered) we do not need a plastic adhesion promoter or primer? Have to replace my black valence which I must have purchased a copy cat as it arrived with no paint. Current ones are a gloss that looks like it matches perfect with the paint you used. I just scuffed it and sprayed. Lasted 80k miles or so before it started chipping enough that I replaced it.
