Question for you. I have a horse trailer with no rust. I would like to repaint it. Do I need to sand it or prep or can I paint right over the current color?

The easiest thing would be to use a cup brush or flap disk on an angle grinder to rough up the surface first. Basically take away any glossiness that the paint has so that your new coat will stick. If you want perfection, then sand blast it to bare metal, however that’s not what it sounds like your goal is. Roughing it up and cleaning the paint to provide a good surface for new paint should work just fine. Hope that helps!

What kind of primer did you use?

I’ve used aerosol cans of rustoleum automotive primer on previous trailers. On this trailer I used a roll-on brush-on rustoleum primer. I personally like the roll-on because it just seems like the spray cans done have much in them and take longer to cover.

Does the roller leave lines?

With the oil based enamel I use, not really. It’s not much different than painting a wall in your living room. The paint blends together and I don’t see any lines, just like there’s not any lines when I use a roller to paint the wall in my house. Good uniform coverage and extra coats if needed will make a good finish.

@Carriage House Trailers Thanks, im getting ready to paint our 2 horse trailer. It doesn't have rust but has very chalky feel to the old paint. Any tips before i prime? Your videos are awesome. Love that you dont have me buying "special" equipment! Cheers!

@@nunofyourbizness5975 If you’re going to paint over the old paint, be sure and use like a 60 or 80 grit sand paper to roughen the surface some so the primer will stick well. That should also get rid of most of the chalkiness.
