Nice camouflage! Looks like the felt insulation. I used carpet felt and white glue. This looks a lot neater and easier.

Thanks for watching. It is very quick and easy. I was at a hobby shop way back in the 70s when I watched an old guy (probably my age) do this, and it's the only way I've done it since. I also do the interior carpet about the same way. I'll do a video on that when I get to that part of the build I'm doing.

On many models I use the paper towel (with a smaller texture) itself to replicate trunk insulation. Once it's cut-to-fit it's secured in place with white glue, then painted black or brown. Initially, that's what I thought I was going to see here. Your way works well too.
@grandpamarkshobbies

I like doing trunks and things like that with paper towels. For the hoods I like to paint them so they stay smooth since they would be tucked into the hood frame.

LOL. you are not an idiot. That is a good idea. I was thinking about it last night, and if you soaked the paper towel in glue and put it in place, then burnished the edges I think it would look GREAT.

For less than $5 you can buy enough material to make 100 tea bags. Looking at the stuff and thinking about under hood insulation I've seen in the past, that material could work. Put it in place and wash it with black acrylic paint. I'm sure your way is best, but I can't resist daydreaming.

Spend some time masking off the underhood metal using small pieces of masking tape. This takes a little time. Then using faux or textured spray paint (usually flat black) simply spray light coats and the results are amazingly real! A nice clean even texture. Faux available thru ebay and textured available at Hobby Lobby (chalk) or Lowe's. Just another idea. Oh yeah, paint the hood's metal color first then the insulation! For better separation mask off the insulation area prior to hood color then do the above masking/painting.

You know I had a teacher that told me that I wouldn't amount to anything. That just made me go out of my way to prove her wrong. Last thing you should be doing is thinking that way. There is something in everyone that they can do better than anyone else on this earth. You just have to find what you like to do and keep doing it until it's the best you can do. There's awesomeness in everyone. Everyone.

Very cool.... the second of your vids that I've learned from this AM. Although not directly related... like most viewers I've used the flocking powder...but man is it messy. I haven't done it yet but I'm curious about using other common household 'powders' like salt, sugar, some seasonings... obviously will require spray painting.. but curious if anybody has a formula.
@grandpamarkshobbies
@grandpamarkshobbies 2 жыл бұрын
I've moved away from the flocking. It just makes way too much of a mess for me. That's why I started stippling the felt and carpets. You have to watch salt, it will eat your paint. I've used salt as a weathering on airplanes and it WILL give you a good weathering effect, but you wouldn't want to leave it on.
@ccook31
@ccook31 2 жыл бұрын
@@grandpamarkshobbies Yike!... I completely forgot about that. duh. I do some armor but haven't used salt for weathering. Thanks for heading off that idea. I've used baking soda to 'gum up' paint for the purpose of mud, dirt, etc... but it's too fine for texture. Maybe sugar. Thanks again for all the intel.
@grandpamarkshobbies
@grandpamarkshobbies 2 жыл бұрын
I've tried sugar before, but when it hits the glue it melts and smooths out. I've used white grout for snow that I mixed with Mog Podge. I thought it was very convincing.

In that high humidity I think I'd try an acrylic paint of some kind. It seems to work best, but you still have to watch, it takes much longer for it to harden. Instead of a day or so I would go about a week and a half.
