Painting Vinyl Seats - Duplicolor

I was never a fan of the Cream and Black "Panda" seats that were in my car. But, options were limited when I was trying to buy a Fastback.
I do want to do something different with the seats in my car, but in the mean time I want to change the color and I figured out a way to do it cheap, to buy me some time before I get different seats.

The car is a 1966 Mustang Fastback with a factory V8 and T5 transmission.

Great work, I used the exact same brand and paint in my 68 fairlane for the whole interior and I’ve never had a problem with it and I did mine about a year ago now. Also the longer it’s on there and the more it’s used the better it looks and feels, so you shouldn’t have any problems. Keep up the great content!

They came out a lot better than I expected. Let me know if it comes off on your pants! That's the only thing that would scare me. I'm sure Duplicolor has that figured out though..

I painted them almost 6 weeks ago (I had lots of videos in queue before this came out), and I haven't had any issues. The paint is holding up great. So well that I've put my plans off for a while on what I want to do with the seats. This is good because it lets me put the money towards more important upgrades. :)

I used the same product for my sun visors. I used the adhesion promotor first. Its clear and pliable, stops paint from flaking.

I don't recommend this as a long term solution. What I mean is I was never going to keep these seats, and so painting them in the interim while I figured out what seats I wanted was purely a band-aid because I disliked the white and black seats so much. This may work well on the carpet, but depending on your use of the seats, it may not hold up as long as you hope for. I plan to do a follow up video on this to show how the paint has held up. :)

Yeah this is a temporary solution, and it'll help freshen up some seats you're not interested in keeping restored, but this isn't really a long term option. :)

@Andy Kruse lol. I'm doing the inside of my dash, doors now on my 67 mustang. They were a nasty green/aqua color. I'm going frost turquoise to match the outside of the car. I got my interior mask off better than a sterile operating room at a hospital. Lol

Very impressive results. Wonder what the outcome would be if a person was going from a darker color to a lighter one, such as black to tan, etc. Probably take more coats to cover the black I guess.

You definitely could, it would make the inner and outer sections match better. I have plans for different seats down the road, but this definitely works for now. :)

Great except for one spot where there’s a natural crease in the vinyl, it’s wearing a little there. Every time I get in a spot to pick new seats, I find other parts I need/want for the car and the new seats keep moving down the list. 😆

@@who55f30 It's holding up well except for that one spot I mentioned. Not flaking, just wearing. I think it's a combo of a natural crease in the vinyl and not putting a thick enough coat on there. Knowing what how it has lasted these past two years, I would absolutely still do this, but put on a thicker coat. :)

Did you use gloss black or flat black? How do you maintain them armor all? Thanks for the videos.

It's a Matte Black color. I haven't wiped them down since I sprayed them, so I don't know if something like armor-all will do the trick. While we're on the subject, I don't use armor-all in my vehicles because it has silicon in it and it just collects more dust. I use "303 Aerospace Protectant" in places where I would have used armor-all. I've been using this for over 10 years and I'm happy with the results. :)

i have a 68 camaro with blue fabric and i want it black, i want to paint my 2 front seats and the rear seat , the 2 door panels and the 2 rear panels, so how many cans do i need? all fabric is blue so i have to paint everything and i dont know how much do i need... is ok with a box of 6 or i need 2 boxes that means 12 cans

I think you'll definitely need all 6 cans of that one box, but I don't think you'll need 12. If the box of 12 is priced fairly and you'd rather not deal with the inconvenience of needing to source an extra can or two, I'd get the box of 12. While I've got you here, please note that painting the interior is more of a band aid than an upgrade. I completely plan on replacing my front seats and I have no interest in restoring them or anything like that, so I had no issue painting them. I feel your pain on the blue interior as I wouldn't like it either, but just a heads up if you choose to go down this path. :)

The console I purchased for this car was used (off Ebay) and before shipping it was around $70. On my previous Mustang I purchased the same console, but new, from CJPony and it was about $150 shipped, now they're $180 plus shipping.

I'd say it's about 97-98% the same. There's one weird crease on my seat that the paint has worn off. It's small, but I see it because I know it's there. I'm ok with that because I knew this was going to be a temporary fix. Otherwise, without that one small spot, you'd never know I painted the seats. :)

@@peterbrown1968 I used one can, but that was for the center sections of the front two seats. If you need to do the whole front seats, and the rear seat, I'd say 3 cans, maybe 4. :)

Some of the reviews and other videos talk about the several years they can get out of set of painted seats with this specific paint. If you put a little effort in up front to make sure the vinyl is clean and good to go, I think the paint will last a while. In the mean time you can decide if you want to re-upholster the factory seats or just buy new. I painted mine to buy me some time until I can afford the seats I want. :)

@@AndyKruseChannel I plan to do the same. I will put black seats in eventually. This is just a show car. So it will only come out of the garage 2 or 3 times a year. So it will get very little use. But, this is a cheap fix for now.

Nope, not required to make these work, that’s party of the beauty of it. But, I still only recommend this as a last-ditch option or when your in between your old seats and getting some new ones. The paint has held up fairly well since I made this video, but there’s o e spot where it not lasting. It’s a part of the vinyl that creases when sitting in it. It doesn’t look horrible, but it doesn’t look good either. 😁
