Would you recommend, most of the time, watering it down first while applying it with a brush? Not sure where is the best place to ask.
@konradalexander75615 жыл бұрын
Honestly, as a rather new scale modeller (~4 years), when i started using enamel/oils/lacquers everything changed for the better. The hype for acrylics is real, yeah they dry fast and all, but the smoothest finished is going to get achieved by a smelly product. As a community we are way too often blinded by one specific brand, i.e. games workshop, ammo by mig, tamiya, without taking into consideration other brands to make our work better. It's great that you point out to everyone, that paints or products used in large scale models can also be used for miniatures, as well as it works the other way around.
@MLKshit5 жыл бұрын
I think the problem (for me at least) is a lack of knowledge as to what works well. We go for the easy stuff like GW, Tamiya, Valejo and such because it is a well known and easy method. I would love to start using oils to get a more Blanchitsu style finished product, but it is hard to know exactly where to start and what to buy (because painting tutorials are easy to find).

Three questions for you, if you please. 1. How long after applying can you leave it after starting the clean up? If I'm batch painting a whole unit, can I apply the product and then leave it over night for example, then reactivate it and clean it the next day? 2. Have you tried the MIG streaking grime, and if yes, is there a difference compared to the AK one? 3. What kind of Q tip do you recommend for the clean up? I have only used regular ones for ear cleaning, but they leave fibers behind. If you have some that don't do that, where can you buy them? Specific modelling stuff, or can you get them in regular stores? Thanks in advance, your tutorials are great!
@GrimdarkCompendium4 жыл бұрын
I recommend batch painting 5-10 models at a time. I wouldn't leave enamels to dry overnight but that would be fine with oils. Mig and Ak are virtually identical as I understand it. I use a regular q tip. Cleaning a few fibers here and there becomes a non issue as you get the hang of the technique.

i know this is an old video BUT, just an extra tip for anyone watching, i recommend buying low odour white spirit, it's a LOT less harmful (in terms of fumes) and is safer to use in enclosed spaces (obviously a mask/respirator is recommended too). Otherwise, great video, love your content dude.

For the maintenance of the grime enamel, I’d suggest investing in metal agitator balls. I use mainly Scale 75, and I put a couple in each too as their acrylics tend to settle. A lifetime supply of agitators is quite cheap. But don’t just use anything, and you may have undesirable chemical reactions with certain materials.

The cleanup on the model was also fun and cleaning the airbrush was easy enough. BUT: My streaking grime seemingly had a broken seal or whatever cause even fully closed it wasn't airtight, which meant I had a baaaad surprise when I shook the bottle. Cleaning up a non-water-soluble paint is a pain in the ass. I had to use half my white spirit bottle to clean up the sink, my hands and the bottle itself and now have it in a revell cleaner bottle that sucked anyway compared to my vallejo and I poured out to find a fitting bottle to pour the streaking grime into.

Eyes, little white dots or pure dark voids (I imagine Darkest Dungeon characters for the latter) Maybe some standard paint schemes. I liked your Tau video, but was wondering how one might do something similar with a unit that typically has parade colors (maybe Mordians, Tau, or a space marine chapter) which are then dirtied in battle. Also, I haven’t found a basing tutorial for your texhnique, so that’s another item I’m hoping to get a closer look at.

Hi! Thank you for the great videos! Would this also work the same way with with MIG Streaking Grime? Thanks! C.

I believe it would. They are both enamel based so should have very similar properties. I'm not 100% on that however as I have never used mig

@@GrimdarkCompendium Thank you! I´ll try it out, then, and report in time. I so far used AK mostly, but happen to have that lying around here.

Yo I've been really into your painting videos however to many people, including me, painting Warhammer miniatures can be a bit costly and we prefer to rely on Reaper Bones or PathFinder for our D&D campaigns, so it would be nice if you can do some more medieval-themed Reaper or PathFinder minis too :)

I tried this after watching videos like your, but I ran into a problem. The enamel streaking grime is still tacky after several days and comes off during normal handling. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?
@GrimdarkCompendium3 жыл бұрын
You need to use a tool to break up any clumped pigments in the bottle and mix the pigment and base throughly . The tackiness is coming from the enamel base. Un mixed it will not dry and have a shiny finish.

It sure is a rad product, and as much as you talk about it and praise it, you should get endorsed by AK Interactive xD You probably advertise it more than they do! Question, how do you clean out your airbrush after using enamels like Streaking Grime? White spirits is my guess, but don't know if it's harmful for the airbrush, like the rubber rings or something, so best to ask! Also, do you use a mask or any ventilation while spraying? Guessing oilpaints is not the best thing for your lungs. I would have bought the stuffs from you, but poor as I am, I couldn't pay twice the price it cost to just buy it directly from AK Interactive, and guessing that shipping from the US to Sweden cost more than from Spain (where the company is). But your tutorials stand out from many others and are special so I will continue to gobble them up!
@GrimdarkCompendium5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes you clean up with mineralmor white spirits, which does not harm your airbrush at all. Always wear a respirator when spraying any paints! Yeah the pricing from Ak directly is hard to beat. Even the distributor price in the states is a dollar and a half more than AK.

In extreme circumstances I.e. a gun that hasn't been cleaned and it's all clogged up is to use Cam cleaner. Just remember to add the water in small amounts, don't just dump it all In

@@GrimdarkCompendium thanks for answering this, it was my same question. Also, any chance you can tell me the exact white spirit you are using? In Australia, Wikipedia says we call it mineral turpentine, but white spirits are also available but says it's for dry cleaners. I'm not sure what to buy.

@@GrimdarkCompendium Thanks for the quick response! Yeah, that's what I'll go with. While I've got you, you're making me reconsider how I'm about to start painting my next army and I was wondering in the process you show in this video, how long you can wait before you rub off the excess enamel on the raised surfaces. I'm thinking about spraying 30 models and then rubbing them, but I'm worried it might dry out too much. Any advice? Also, do you thin it before airbrushing it?

You shouldn't need to, but if you do, use mineral spirits 1:1 or slightly more thinner.
