Dear Stefan de Groot, this was the most best tutorial on anything I have ever seen. Profound, showing your sources and resources and speaking clear enough, so as a not beeing a native Inglish I could understand everything. I was looking, as absolut beginner, for information on watercolor on Procreate with iPad Pro, but what I got was much more. A bunch of organised hints about the painting process. The insight in the need to get clear about what you are doing and the understanding, that painting is not just doodle. I need to be patient and take your time for the detail. Thank you very much indeed.

Thanks for compliments Gunter. The beauty of drawing and painting that you will keep learning each time you work on it. Make as many mistakes as possible. Because that is how you will learn and discover new things.

@StayfDraws8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If you are dyslexic videos are a big help. Especially when learning new software. It helps a lot that you can directly see where everything is. I am going to launch an ebook series this year about drawing on the iPad in several drawing apps. The eBooks will all have video.

Thank you Stayf. I just opened my new ipad Pro and pencil. I have been an artist since childhood, never thought I would give in to digital to do art. You have been an inspiration as I thought about purchasing the ipad. May have further questions. Love your view. I lived in Vienna Austria. I would like to learn how to get into children illustration, hope this ipad pro will give me what I need to get going. Anton's work looks like the art that was in my childhood magazine-Highlights, Hidden pictures.

Hi Stayf - this is my favourite video that you have made. I can see a lot of hard work went into the illustration which really paid off. I found it especially interesting about your Grandfather. I had a few attempts using water colours in procreate and it takes a lot of time.😊

This painting took 32 hours to complete! And you can of course don't show the whole process of the painting. I am now painting Haarlem again, with details of buildings in a three-point perspective. You can already see some previews on my Facebook Page and my Instagram. I will also be posting some time lapse videos here. They are photorealistic paintings done in oil paint.

Stayf Draws I live on Bowen Island which is a few kilometres west of Vancouver Canada. I went to the Academy of Art University San Francisco in my youth but chose to follow a career in Real Estate instead. Now that I am older I am retraining myself from tradition art media to a digital artist stating with iPad Pro and the app Procreate. In hindsight I should have stayed the course as an artist as that has always been my true passion. Thank you again for sharing your art and providing tutorials.

That is great to hear Dëa! We all have our own paths to follow. How wonderful art can be, it is also hard to make a living of it. I have been an artist for more than twenty years, but it has been only the last 9 years I can fully support myself. Procreate is a great tool for dr`wing and painting digital. To me it comes closest to painting analog.

Hello from the UK. Thank you for this video. I love how you keep to water colour principles. I'm guilty of using 'undo' all the time. I'll try to do it your way. I admire your work.
@StayfDraws7 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrea, thanks for the compliment. I also use Undo, so don't feel guilty! That is the beauty of painting digital. This watercolorist painting took me 32 hours to complete. For me that is a long time to work on an illustration. To me I made it a challenge to build up the colours like you do when you are painting watercolours on paper and see if you can achieve the same effect. It is fine to make mistakes, because then you will learn.

which version of the iPad would you recommend to illustrate? since both have different specs... Fantastic outcome! 💕
@StayfDraws8 жыл бұрын
Hello Wassy, thanks for the compliment. If you are comparing the iPad Pro's 12.9 and 9.7 inch then there are some differences. I work on the 12.9 inch and I like the bigger screen. The 9.7 has one main difference and that is True Tone. The True Tone display means the iPad Pro 9.7 automatically adapts the colour and intensity of the display to match the light in your surroundings. I have not seen it myself, but I talked to other artists that really like that, because they can keep on painting in the same colors, whether they work during the day or at night. If you like screen estate I would go for the 12.9. If you want a more compact iPad then go for the 9.7 inch. They both support the Apple Pencil.

Hi Stayf, wonderful watercolor tutorial. I am just getting started with Procreate and had a couple of questions..you said you can go back and change the color later but I would imagine it would be via erasing and then re-coloring? Also, I noticed as you pulled up the color wheel there were already some swatches of color below, were these stored when you made the 6 images and tried out different color aches and stored the one you like? Thanks and thank you for the wonderful tutorials. Oscar
@StayfDraws6 жыл бұрын
When you work in watercolor that indeed means you first have to erase the color and re-color it. I have made swatches of the color scheme I liked best. I also made some extra color swatches while working on the painting.

Excellent work. Curious: do you find that if you use the iPad Pro for more than 20 minutes your vision gets blurry? I want to use it more but I find after a short period I can't see right.
@StayfDraws8 жыл бұрын
You should keep your distance. Like you are drawing on paper. Then you will be fine. And if your eyes get blurry stop for a moment and then continue. It is great though if you want to paint in a Van Gogh style! ;)

Hello Stayf from Franny in NY. I really enjoyed your tutorial. I also loved hearing the history of your grandfather's animation studio and how you managed to work it into your illustration. It brought added warmth to your work. I've subscribed to your channel and anxiously await additional tutorials. You showed many aspects of illustration that many other artists don't bother mentioning, i.e., the need to take photos, preliminary sketches, color keys, using actual items from the era you're capturing, (all of which are time consuming.) You created an excellent and well-thought out tutorial. I just have one question and that is what is the brand name of your iPad Pro case? I noticed your case does not obstruct the edges around your iPad Pro screen, leaving the artist to freely paint a background wash smoothly without worrying about catching the lip of the case. Thanks so much for sharing your talent.

Thanks for your nice comment Franny. Unfortunately I don't have time enough to do those elaborate paintings. This one took me about 32 hours to complete. The cover I us is called the Dandy Cover by VR and you can buy it on Amazon. Here is the link: amzn.to/2igiTw5 It protects your iPad and it still looks very Classy. I also made a review video about it with some other things I use for my iPad Pro. Here is the link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqSXqp6og75kgM0
