NANO TEXTURE UPDATE! please note that I may have spoken too soon with regards to “not getting Nano” It might actually be great for artists specifically - I placed my order for it and will be sharing a video about it”nano vs paperlike” in about 3-4 weeks when it ships. I had a chance to test it at the Apple Store yesterday and really enjoyed the experience

Finally the one review I was waiting for, just as I was getting sick of all the useless crap those tech review channels are making. Unlike you, they are totally not the target audience as these devices are only good for them to be reviewed over and over again

Yea I honestly cringe when I hear tech youtubers say: “i don’t know who this is for”, or “it’s still just an iPad, no where as useful as a Mac”, or the worst one “still can’t video edit on this thing” Like seriously, is it not obvious that the target audience is digital artists and paperless writers?

@@Ken-dm5xti mean for that price? Those things are valid af. You could literally draw from an ipad released 5 yrs ago. I would be on your side if they are both priced relatively close. But it seems like you just wanted someone to kiss Apple's ass. You and the op's bias is so strong your isheep ass is showing.

@@Ken-dm5xtWell, they’re not wrong about "It’s still just an iPad, no where as useful as a Mac". iPadOS as of far is atrocious and a glorified iPhoneOS but bigger. I don’t own a computer other than the 12.9 iPad Pro pre-M1 model, so let me tell you about my struggles. There are many essential things for me that you cannot do on iPadOS like formatting your own USB drives, flash drives and USB accessories that suddenly stop working after you update the OS, a Files app that is very rudimentary, apps and downloads not running in the background or when the screen is off…etc. Something has to change with the iPad Pro and iPadOS is the biggest stinking culprit. I mean it fulfills its promises as a professional design/art tool for me, but iPadOS lacks professionally in basic OS tasks that my cheap $150 android phone can do. Other than that, I agree with everything else you said.

I’m old enough to recall the initial release of the iPad and thinking, FINALLY a device selfishly invented just for Artists, NO ONE ELSE! Good ol’ Steve Jobs! 🙌🏾 It was a dream come true for Art Narcissists like me! I rolled my eyes every time KZbinrs called it a toy for not having features that THEY wanted 🙄 LOL my thought was always, “who cares?” Don’t buy it and move on! These things are for ARTISTS and your GRANDMA, who don’t need all the extra crap! I was actually shocked when Apple finally upgraded to a decent filing system. I was having so much fun with the art apps, that I really didn’t really know what I was missing until it arrived. I thought maybe the so-called “regular users“ were right. Perhaps IPads aren’t really all they’re cracked up to be 🧐 But now, with the release of the new Apple Pencil and ZBrush, I’m DOUBING down! If you don’t like iPads, WHO CARES, take a hike! Grab whatever tablet that you DO like from whatever company, and call it a day 🤷🏾

So refreshing to see reviewers that really uses the ipad to its potential review the iPad pro instead of other tech reviewers that always says "this is not a pro machine","apple should put macos in the ipad", like they don't get what is the target audience of this product.

As an artist, I totally agree about the nano texture… not a fan. But unlike you, I always go for the 11” iPad Pro. Not only because I travel a lot, but because it’s just easier to hold when sketching while standing. To me it’s a true tablet. And even when I’m using it on a table, the 11” screen is plenty enough for me. But it’s all good. 👍 Whichever size iPad an artist uses, they’re amazing tools to create on!

You are proof in the pudding - the value I got from your video from an artist perspective was pretty significant beyond the main tech reviewers I've seen. I had no idea they kept the tap feature on the pencil, let alone the fact that you can trigger it from a distance! That also makes it the perfect presentation device for instructors on-site who are projecting their display. I still think they should redesign the old pencil to have these updates, its just so significant. Lots of people who aren't going to buy a new ipad for 3 years would definitely consider upgrading the pen imo. Not sure If I'll skip the M4 entirely, but I'm definitely sticking with my M2. I hope they make apple pencil hover OS-wide like a desktop cursor in WWDC. Now THAT would truly make it a must have feature.

I ordered the new Ipad Air with the pencil pro the day of their event. So far i cannot be happy enough and working as concept artist professionally with it, i would HIGHLY recommend it to any artists. The Air can do everything the pro can with "mostly" no differences that you will notice in any of your work and if you need more then you can use an actual computer to do the heavy HEAVY lifting. Aside from saving hundreds of dollars the Air can do everything you will ever need it to. The greatest thing out of this whole new line for me personally is the pen, the pen features have been a GAME CHANGER with the haptic feedback and squeeze has been so damn nice to have not only physically but mentally. If you dont want to fork out the full price for the pro, highly suggest going for the new air.

Great video. I’ve come to the conclusion that the average “tech reviewer” on KZbin is a very basic individual who rarely had a professional career other than KZbin. They’re not professional journalists, artists, engineers or designers of anything other than KZbin. So they frequently look to each other for content and point of views. It’s an echo chamber. As a viewer it’s always refreshing to hear from artist and other professionals about how THEY use the tech. Great video.

I think the nano vs. glossy decision for artists isn't as straightforward as Adam claimed. Yes, you don't want to double-dip with diffusion by adding a matte cover on top of a matte screen, but not everybody wants the tactile grittyness of a paperlike - some just want a bit more minimalist line stability while drawing and gliding a hand over the screen. For me I much prefer the nanotexture drawing experience so far compared to any screen protector I've ever tried (including paperlike and astropad). The loss to color saturation is also pretty marginal compared to my M2 glossy, and is worth it to have less ambient lighting glare indoors.

Agreed. Not everyone likes the coarse feel of paper like covers. But that’s his opinion for himself. For example,e, there must be well over a dozen major sets of pencils from major art pencils manufacturers. I’ve found that each of those I’ve used over the years feel somewhat different. I would tend to pick up the ones I like a bit better, mist of the time. But other people will prefer the ones I like least. That’s why all of these companies exist.

I received mine last Thursday to replace my M1 iPad Pro. It's much smoother for drawing at a high resolution in Procreate and the pencil is a nice update. The haptics actually makes the pencil double-tap to switch between brush and eraser useful. I was always hitting it by accident before and not knowing that I switched between them. I ended up disabling double-tap, but now turned it back on because I can actually feel when it switches. Also, I recommend smooth glass and no screen protector, but that's just my preference.

That point you made about longevity is absolutely true. I’ve been using the same 2017 iPad Pro for my professional art until now, and I’m only considering a new device due to storage space issues that I keep running into (I made the mistake of getting 64GB and it’s filled up multiple times due to how much art I make). I want to get the latest iPad Pro so it’ll last me even longer than my current one, this time I’m investing in at least a 1TB, if not the 2TB. This video was extremely helpful in helping me make my decision, thank you!

Great video, and thanks for sharing! Professional artist here as well. As an alternative to the M4 Pro people should seriously look at the M2 Ipad Air with Apple Pencil Pro support. M2 is plenty powerful for most users. The new pencil is a game changer IMO, but an OLED display is a nice to have not necessarily a must have. Our team upgraded to 2 of the new Airs as opposed to a previous generation of Ipad Pro. So far very stoked, just patiently waiting for Adobe Fresco and Procreate to release their updates!🤙 Happy drawing!

I'm new to your work and I just wondered what size your images are when working? I've started working with higher resolutions recently and only having ten layers available in Procreate is proving to be a real pain to workaround. I'm struggling with the cost of the 1Tb iPad 13. Contrary to so many folks out there I am overjoyed with the thin and lighter design; I work usually holding my iPad in one hand and for years I've wished it was lighter and easier to handle. But going for the 16Gb is troubling me! I do hope that Apple sometime soon decides to charge fairer prices for their RAM and ssd upgrades. Thanks.

While the FEELING is still better on my cintiq in regards to screen and stylus ipad is suprisingly better and more comfortable in every other aspect. I'll look into a paperlike screen protector maybe then it could beat out the cintiq. Your review is excellent and really helped me in deciding that this will be the first iPad I finally invest in. Also, I know you're not a huge fan of Procreate but when you select a drawing tool in Procreate, it casts a shadow on the screen in the form of that tool. Thanks for your lengthy section on the Apple Pencil Pro -- especially the grip positions and the squeeze feature. Everyone else just covered the basics with a few scribbled lines. It's been hard to get a good review of the pencil pro, but your review and the review from Bardot Brush has really opened my eyes on the functionality that squeeze and barrel roll bring. Barrel roll is particularly useful for the painting style I prefer (similar to a square edged oil painting brush) which is really tedious to achieve on older stylus combos. I haven't upgraded my Wacom Cintiq for many years, so I don't know how the roll feature works there. Anyway kudos to your great artist-centric reviews.

Does Apple Pencil Hover work on Sidecar in Photoshop on the Mac? ie, like with a Cintiq where you can see your tool under the cursor before you press down on the tip?
@nathanbirchall6941
@nathanbirchall6941 Ай бұрын
As an artist, one of the other cool features of the Pencil Pro is the barrel rotation feature that was only previously seen on the Wacom Art Pen released years ago and only usable with certain Wacom tablets. Being able to rotate brushes live and experiment with the marks we can make without changing the brush or opening a menu is fantastic.

Sidecar is working better with the usb cable connected to the mac. Stable connection and all. What I am wondering though, do all the pen stuff work over sidecar. Hover and all? I am wondering if I update my old ipad pro, or get one of the new wacom tablets, like wacom movink. I know the price difference is huge. Not talking about price :)

I am trying to figure out if I should keep mine. I got the M4 13" 1TB but I am seriously thinking to return it, I still have the 1TB 2018 12.9" (+keyboard) version and it feels fine. The 2018 ram limitation for 3d sculpting, about 3-4x speed with Davinci video transcode (smoother playback) are the only things that seem valuable but the mac/pc/server are always there if needed. There is so much with the M4 thats great, the apps are there, the screen quality is a nice bump, the ram is a nice bump, the pencils feedback system is a nice bump, reduced lag time with the pen and the TB connectivity (ie extra monitor, HUB, extrenal NVME, 10GBE), neural/ML based use cases but it all still feels incremental even compared to the 2018 version. More value in buying a macbook (or using old iMacPro) and using the old 2018 through sidecar with them. I don't know, I think its going back if I can't convince myself of the value gained?

I mean if Adam is a professional artist, he probably has the money to spend on the maxed out version and he doesn't even do it. So that's tells you something. That you're not really seeing much of a difference in performance. You might as well just get the base model and hook up an SSD

I know you've walked your initial statement back somewhat but I think that you're right about the nano texture. As someone who also work in multiple mediums, that color accuracy is much, much more important to me. If I want texture while drawing I can always get a magnetic screen protector. Also does anyone have experience using Affinity software on iPads?

Thank you so much for this review. I’ve decided it’s better to get the standard screen over nano-texture because I prefer the double OLED colors. I can just put on a magnetic screen protector for drawing and then remove it when I’m not drawing and I want to do other things like media consumption. I already hold on to my tech devices for a long time because tech isn’t cheap (for me it’s usually 6+ years). I’m planning on getting this iPad M4 and will be holding on to it for many years. I do animation and 3D work so I will opt for the higher storage for the higher RAM for animation and 3D modeling workflow on the iPad just in case. 1 and 2TB options have more RAM, which may be good for being able to do more layers/tracks for animation, higher resolution for drawing and being able to achieve more details on a 3D model (aka more polygons).

Thanks. I was considering the Nano texture but I like a paper textured screen protector. And from what I've heard, the texture on the Nano is kind of gummy. It gives resistance but it doesn't have any texture. 50% of the artists that have tried it didn't like it and the other ones liked it so it's hard to tell it's a preference thing.

I’m definitely in just the artist hobbyist camp but love your reviews. Been waiting to upgrade my 2018 pro and although I don’t neeeeeeed anything in the m4 pros other than a higher base storage I think it’s finally time. But I’m still waiting on Zugu to make their new cases and to see if the new iOS update brings anything crazy that would warrant the higher ram in the 1tb version.

Hy, casual drafter and future Tattoo artist here! (Drawing almost every day) I´m thinking about upgrading to m4 (Currently owning an 2018 iPad pro). Would you say it is a huge leap between those two regarding technology and worth upgrading? If yes, should I go with 1 TB option? (Cuz i´d be using it for the next 5 years or so.) I don´t wanna spend money on something that has only some minor tweaks changes where I´m not gonna notice a difference at all...

I do t think that 1TB is necessary - I generally use iCloud and you can always connect an external USB-C drive if you need, Apple overcharges for their memory As for performance, for my work, the M2 with hover is essential, but if you focus primarily on line art then it might not be as important The 2018 might do the job just fine - I’d only upgrade if it’s not a reliable enough iPad for your current needs

Kudos on the commentary about the color pick by pressing the pencil (and the - potential- double function with a hold.. I typically set the undo in the upper button of my Wacom, alt+LMB in the lower for color picking). I was wondering about that when this new tech just showed up recently, but even artists-youtubers hadn't touched on this (pun maybe intended). And yes, it's one of the things I see breaking my flow in tablets (I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE, but used a standard ipad before), specially compared to my desktop setup (Windows) and a mere Wacom, where color picking while painting is flawless and pure muscle memory, now.

@@AdamDuffArt very true. I mean, IIRC, the only stylus I’ve ever seen support rotation before this was the Wacom Art Pen and they haven’t made that for a looooooong time. I’ve never used one with rotation and honestly don’t know what of my go to brushes would actually benefit from that

I agree that Apple products are top-notch in the industry, but is it a problem if I use a computer with Windows? Apple products have been economically out of reach for me. For example, I have also found programs like Krita and Medibang to be very effective, and I work well with them. I also use CSP, but is it essential to own an Apple OS and Apple products? Are they crucial for work? Thank you for your response.

My (M2) Ipad Pro is the only Apple Product i have, i think it depends a lot on what u wanna do daily with it. For Data transfer between PC, IPad and Android Phone i use Google Drive. The only files i share are Pictures that i drew (in Procreate) so thats no Problem at all. CSP btw is on Ipad aswell.
