Roy, So many of us turned up it was a tight squeeze in the train room.Nice to see White mountain all back together. Roy you use so much " spackling paste" I suspect you order tubes by the train load. A nice surprise to see a manifest run from Pocotello to Green River.Well I'm celebrating with a chocolate Easter Egg, then it's bedtime. Cheers, Chris perry.

Hi Chris! I must say: the train room was jam-packed full of people. I guess you have to come early to find a space. But it's standing room only. Yep, White Mountain is returning to its original condition as it was before I almost destroyed it by cutting off the top. As for that sparkling paste, you're right. I should buy stock in the company that makes it. Enjoy that chocolate! ...Roy

Funny stuff, Roy. There are no unorthodox methods in model railroading. Nice work repairing White Mountain. May I make a suggestion? Where the crack runs around the bottom, use different sized talus simulating rock fall. But only glue it on the bottom section. This should help with the disguise. See ya on Tuesday's Dispatch show.

Great work Roy, there are no unorthodox methods in model trains from what I'm understanding. If only I could quit buying Rolling Stock and engines I could probably start my layout, LOL. Realistically I won't start my layout until maybe the end of the year. Right now I'm just stockpiling rolling stop in engines and building turnouts, using fast-track jigs. You do give me ideas on how I would like to do the scenery. My layout will feature a whoop similar to Williams Loop where there are plenty of trees and vegetation and we'll go into more of a desert scenery after that. Anyway, keep up the good work and sharing your ideas.

Hi Roy, another winner!! A great tutorial video on redoing scenery and getting the "moveable" White Mountain back to a nice integrated scene. I loved the masking tape plus the Speckel paste -- a low cost and apparently easy fix. I'll try that on my layout. I liked your discussion and "show and tell" of the Woodland Scenics paints. Knowing just how much and what appears to be based on your extensive experience. One question, what ratio of paint to water do you use and when do you vary the ratio? Thanks, Roy, another wonderful video. - Dean from Minnesota
@n-scaleunionpacificevansto65695 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Dean. I'm delighted to see White Mountain returning to its original condition as it was before I almost destroyed it when cutting off the top. In response to your pigment-to-water ratios, let me tell you that back when I started using the pigments, I carefully measured 8 drops of water to 1 drop of pigment, or even 16 drops of water to 1 part pigment when I wanted it to be extra diluted. But now I know that this isn't a scientific process. I just put some water in the cup and add pigment till I'm satisfied with the color and consistency. Thinner definitely is better when using it as a wash, but it works great no matter what you do with it. ...Roy
@deandanielson80745 жыл бұрын
@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 Thanks for the encouragement, Roy. I think I'll start as you did with measurements and then gain some confidence to wing it based on some experience. The ratios you mentioned are good hints on where to start. Thanks again. - Dean from Minnesota

Thanks, Thom. It's so much fun, trying to replicate a prototype. Back in the 1980's, I built an eastern layout set in the hills of central Pennsylvania with lots of trees. This is the area where I grew up and knew best. On my current layout, I "went west" because the deserts and semi-arid regions of the American West and Southwest have intrigued me for many years. Almost no trees, and I'm having a blast. ...Roy

Craft paint can also be used for washes -- not sure what the cost differential may be, although at a buck or so per bottle, it's cheap for layout use.

Roy, Good work on the repairs. There will be no new cracks with the tape and paste method. I know that you have more disguise scenery to do, but why not try making the join not the only dark line of strata. If you risk some other dark strata above, the eye should be distracted. I think. You can always paint it out. I like the fact that you take the risk of letting the washes run over the terrain. It creates a very good effect. "Rail On". As SB would say! Regards Stephen.

That's right, HighBrickBuilder. I'm going to try to "plant" various kinds of small shrubs on White Mountain, hopefully recreating the kind of growth that you see in a very dry region. In fact, I've been wanting to do that for a long time, but I hesitated until now, not knowing the future of White Mountain and the helix on my layout. I'm especially motived to disguise that joint in the scenery by using vegetation. Hola Roy! Young man, you are truly a great inspiration. You're not exactly living in a hotbed of Transcon activity, yet you are able to portray a major UP route to the point that anyone even remotely familiar with that location will immediately recognize it. Your remote (in a RR sense) location has not stopped your creation of, and participation in, a truly world-wide community, via the power of the internet. And you continue to give back to anyone with a modem, all for the price of a few minutes of our time - a worthwhile investment I dare say! Roy, do you think that maybe because you do live away from the RR hustle and bustle, it gives you a little more freedom to try new stuff? Maybe not having a Negative Nancy looking over your shoulder saying “nah, that’ll never work” is more of a benefit that we know. And if you figured it out once, there’s no harm in trying again - maybe it’ll work even better. I guess it all boils down to perspective - and I think you have an excellent one. Thank you, Thom. I want you to know how much I appreciate your very kind words. It really is a pleasure to share the hobby with you. I was out of the hobby for 30 years, but when I came back to it in 2014, it was with a sense of pent-up passion, and now I'm having more fun than ever. Thanks again for your beautiful comment and for sharing the hobby with me. ...Roy

Roy, Once again another good video. Question: Are all of your locomotives Kato?

Thanks, Ken. Not all of my locomotives are Katos, but most of them are. That is, 22 out of 26. I really like Katos. ...Roy

Hey Roy. Did you see the announcement on the Spike150 website that you can sign up for a ride on May 12 with the Big Boy 4014 and Living Legend 844 in a dome car from Ogden to Evanston via Echo Canyon? Bargain basement price of $5,000! $3,000 for coach seating.

Thanks for telling me about the Spike150 website, my friend. I had no idea just how expensive those tickets are, until you brought the website to my attention. I'd love to go on the excursion, but - wow! - it's expensive, isn't it?! ...Roy

Too intense or opaque rock colors, in my opinion, is the biggest and likely the most common mistake when modeling rocky areas. My personal technique differs some, but I completely agree with your use of washes.

Guarantee checks out.

That's good to hear, PickelJars. Making guarantees is always risky business. The good news is: those pigments require no artistic talent. No matter what you do, they always turn out great. ...Roy

Thanks, model railer. It's good to see White Mountain returning to its original condition as it was before I almost destroyed it by cutting off the top. ...Roy

You're absolutely right, Jerry. We model railroaders have a tendency to apply colors that are too dark. I was inspired by the colors of the real White Mountain, but even so, the colors turned out darker than I really wanted them to be on my layout. I'm going to apply a very, very thin wash of white pigment to the mountain. Past experience tells me that will lighten it up. ...Roy

My own technique to create a "sun bleached" look is to vigorously dry brush the rocks with a 2" or 3" moderately stiff brush. Use only downward strokes. In preparation, the white paint is thinned significantly as if you're going to apply it as a wash. The surface of the rock will be lightened without filling in the shadows between rocks and doesn't leave a "frosted tips" look (ask your wife what that means LOL),

@@jerrysmith1929 That sounds like a great technique, Jerry. I'm going to have to try it. It definitely should lighten up the terrain. Thanks for sharing it. I think it's amazing the things we model railroaders can learn from each other. ...Roy
